From Out Of The Shadows

Rate this book

This is the newest Erotic Romance, Science Fiction/Fantasy from author Linda Mooney, who has penned eleven Whiskey Creek Press Bestsellers to date! Croat was a Lupan, one of the half-man, half-beast creatures long thought to be extinct, or fabricated from fairy tales. Lupan were folklore, nothing more than a myth.
Tora was a Sensitive. Her kind really existed, and normal people feared Sensitives because it was common knowledge that all Sensitives were evil and practiced the dark magicks.
Captured and thrown inside Baron Agrino’s dungeon, they discovered a connection between them that defied all reason, and a love that transcended all boundaries.
But is their love enough to stop the baron from accomplishing what he plans to do with every Lupan he hopes to capture? Or, worse, what he’ll do with Tora once he learns what she is?

Another reread-to-review from our summer move.

FOotS (LULZ) is one of my favorite Mooney stories. A slightly different take on werewolves/wolf shifters, this tale is set in a time and place without tech, all small farming villages, what seems to be a feudal system, horses, and there are limited firearms in the possession of the connected and wealthy. It feels like it could possibly be far eastern Europe 400+ years ago. No way to know for sure, but that's how I visualized it.

Told in Mooney's signature no-frills style, FOotS is the tale of two undesirables/monsters who find each other in the worst of circumstances and build something amazing from it. No OTT Alpha males, no unnecessary drama or angst, no TSTL heroine... just a good solid romance between two determined and capable very-human people with an uncomplicated plot and slow build. There are sex scenes after the 50% mark, and while more detailed than Mooney's work often is, I wouldn't go so far as to call them explicit. (YMMV on that one, but I'm one of the "the dirtier, the better" types when it comes to most of my reads. ) There is one "shifted" sex scene in here at the end, if you're squeamish about that sort of thing.

Because of the lack of angst and navel-gazing in Mooney's writing, the heartbreak that occurs at a pivotal plot point in the tale hits hard and deep. It's subtle, burrows in, and just hurts...and continues to ache worse as you are given a chance to sit with it and come to full realization since Tora isn't written to be internally hand-wringing and foreshadowing to let you in that more is going on than the surface conversations lets on.

Because she is just Too Good at times, but that would be the Sensitive/Empath in her. Won't force anything, not even that. His life expectancy is short, but hers is even shorter.

So.

Totally enjoyable read and worth picking up if you're in the mood for a shifter/empath romance. Just do not expect the usual genre tropes and you should be fine.

Definitely expected better, and more.

First, for those who reads blurbs, this isn't erotic romance, this is a standard fated couple PNR. There's one sex scene towards the late middle, and I think an other at the end. Neither is long. So if smut disturb you, I think this is a safe bet.( I have no idea why the author would declare this is erotic...)

Better: the bare plot seems intriguing, unfortunately it remains bare. A thin story dragged along. Not much characterization nor world building. Not much romance either, as there's a fated bond, so why bother?

More: everything was easy peasy, no real problems, no real drama. Even in death... or sex.
Really meh overall. Pity, as the idea was intriguing as I said.
But at 0.99, you could give it a try, if you have time on your side.

Different take on were wolves

This was a different take on were wolves. I usually don't like werewolves. This story gets you interested from the beginning. Imagine being intended to be a monsters food and then falling in love instead.
