Brian Tanner, reporter for the New York Times, was not pleased when his editor assigned him to interview a football player at Florida State University, young Shawn Barton, whom he had never heard of. Moreover, Brian had never seen a football game, and didn't want to. Everything changed when, on his first meeting, he found Shawn delivering a lecture on theoretical Physics before a large audience. Shawn Barton, Brian decided, was far more than a talented jock. Gradually, Brian found himself and his wife Lauren drawn into Shawn's circle of close friends, and gradually became part of the boy's extended family. One of Shawn's exploits included making his first movie, during which his off-screen adventure turned out to be more threatening than what happened to the character he portrayed in the film. After the tragic loss of his parents and grandmother, Shawn found security in the home he and his guardian Chad built in north Florida. He named it "Halcyon."
