Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition

Rate this book
Divine Sex examines every Biblical reference to human sexual practice. By using tools of modern scholarship, evidence is produced to show that the Bible does not actually say what generations of professional religionists have told us. The Bible does not forbid all sexual activity other than monogamous heterosexual intercourse. Instead it treats us to a wide range of God- approved, and sometimes even God- supplied, sexual possibilities that the church has never told us about. In fact, the most famous erotic poem in history, is actually a book of the Bible! God is the Architect both of human sexuality, and of sexual pleasure. The passion, pleasure and possibilities of sex are His gift to humanity. Like any proud parent, Father God is pleased and honored when His kids delight in His gift/ God made sex to be fun. He is not embarrassed nor is He angered when we enjoy it. Sex as God designed it to be is truly Divine. From polygamy and concubinage, to prostitution, to masturbation, to oral sex, to nudity - and all else besides - this study of what the Bible actually says, and does not say, will surprise, perhaps elate, and we believe will liberate the reader from the sex-stifling effects of church dogma. Sex without religious baggage. Sex without guilt and shame. Sex as the Creator meant it to be. Divine Sex. For more information on spiritual freedom visit the author's website, www.freedomguide.net

I never write reviews of books, but this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime kind of book especially for those who grew up around conservative religious and sex-negative teaching. This book SHATTERS our current thinking around sexuality and it does so while preserving the inerrancy of the Bible. Most books on this subject tend to be philosophical, but this book stays firmly rooted in the Word of God from beginning to end. The author does not shy away from any part of scripture. I can't emphasize enough how powerful this book is. It has made my faith even stronger. It has helped me discover how to praise my maker with all of me which He has created. Rather than dragging around shame and guilt, I walk with a new energy in my step, smile on my face, and praises in my heart for God's goodness. But it also stirs a sort of righteous anger at how blind, spiritually crippled, and emotionally damaged we all are from believing false teaching. This book does not give license for everyone to go do whatever they want, but the mature believer will discover the liberties that God has given and how to shamelessly integrate spiritual love into all things, even sex. It will utterly transform your old paradigm. I dare you to read it!

If you are looking to find out what the Bible really says about sex, not what people or Western culture has told you the Bible says or means about sex, then read this book. Don't let what other people told you about the right or wrong of sex get between you and God. Bottom line, God is concerned about us loving one another, not about how or who we have sex with.

A useful tool for deconstructing the layers of tradition and superstition that "the church" (whatever that means) has surrounded human sexuality with over thousands of years of shifting opinion and practice.

Not everyone will agree with the conclusions the author reaches (putting it mildly!). Simply taking this book at face value would ruin many lives and relationships, but that is no reason not to read it with maturity, have a discerning mind and choose your own response. Worthwhile
reconstruction in any area of life takes time and effort to reach conclusions that you can live with, and live by.

I particularly appreciated the closing section which gives a short summary on how to carry out biblical exegesis. Good to see an author not just stating conclusion, but showing something of the process used to get there.

Good Exposition on Sex

For years, the Church has given piecemeal teachings on sex with cherrypicked Scripture texts. Thelos goes against this grain to bring comprehensive teachings on sex. He also uses Scripture to alleviate untold and unnecessary suffering the faithful dealt with.

I have to advise you it's a long read. However if you stick with it, it'll be worth it!
