DK Eyewitness Book. Full-color photos. "This unique book offers much more than beautiful insect photographs. Not only are the large and extra-large 4-color plates of highest quality, but they are used to illustrate butterfly and moth life cycles, behavior, migration, anatomy, feeding, mimicry, silk production, rearing, and much more. An impressive, informative book, yet inexpensive.
A Nice book with very good illustrations including original specimens rarely shown in other books. This is a good book for an introduction to entomology.
This Eyewitness book was one I recall reading back in the day. But this one looks like a re-release, given the extra page count. It's all you can learn about butterflies and moths: from their anatomy, ecology, to different species and life cycles.
Filled with numerous facts, tidbits and high quality images, any reader will come out knowing a lot about these insects. The extra pages come from the back pages with a glossary and classification listing of the species. It was nostalgic, but I also learn a couple of new things too in the process. I greatly appreciate the Eyewitness series a lot.
Summary: Butterfly and Moth written by Paul Whalley is an informational book that describes various facts on butterflies and moths. This book is part of the eyewitness book series, which is a widely know series of informational books that describe all sorts of historical and scientific topics. The book describes how to tell whether an insect is a butterfly or a moth as well as each of their life stages from caterpillar to butterfly or moth. Common butterflies and moths as well as exotic butterflies and moths are also described. This book also describes how butterflies and moths survive in the wild through camouflage or mimicry. Throughout this informational book there are vivid and highly detailed real life pictures of all the different types of butterflies, moths, caterpillars, cocoons, and chrysalids.
Class Uses/Themes: I would use this book in my classroom during a unit on butterflies. I would use this book along with other informational books in a butterfly text set for students to conduct a research project on the life cycles of butterflies. I could also use this text during this butterfly unit to explain to my students the differences between butterflies and moths, since they commonly are mixed up.
As is typical for books like this, the narrative is extremely detailed and somewhat overwhelming. The layout does not facilitate a read-aloud session, but the photographs are gorgeous and we enjoyed perusing the pages and pointing out the butterflies and moths we found most interesting.
This book would be good for a reference, although the amount of information about each individual creature is quite limited. The clip art CD included with the book could be very useful, especially for adding accurate photos to a project or report. We enjoyed reading this book together.
Incredible, beautiful, comprehensive reference on butterflies and moths and their life cycles and characteristics, including parts of the world they live in, habits, unusual characteristics, and more. Also included is a cd with wonderful clip art for reports, presentations, or lessons.
