Who knew I’d become an author? Not me. But when the opportunity knocked, I answered the door and welcomed it in. I approach life with as much positivity as I can—celebrating the hits and laughing at the misses. Nothing worthwhile is easy, and that includes everything in my life. But I have much to smile about—my lovely mother, a beautiful daughter, two precious granddaughters, my adorable dogs, and my sweet husband of over thirty years. He has always supported me—including uprooting to move to the other side of Charlotte, N.C. for a life change, just when we thought we were settled.

If settled means not going after my dreams, then I never want to be settled. I give my all to things I enjoy—and that includes writing. In 2021, I hit the USA Today Bestselling Author list, and recently, two of my books were named RONE Finalists!

I love to express myself to the point that my daughter avoids going to the movies with me because I’m that woman in the row in front of you who gleefully munches her popcorn and laughs at every hilarious scene. Loudly. Besides my family, I love chocolate, popcorn, laughter, and animals. I love animals so much that I frequently sprinkle them in my stories as secondary characters. They usually steal the show! British and American history have always interested me, so writing historical romances set in the U.K. and the US is where my passion is.

When I was barely three years old, my parents divorced, and my mom moved my sister and me from New York to South Carolina to live near her parents. Juggling a full-time job and full-time school, my mother became my first genuine hero—she never waved the white flag when things were tough. And things quickly got tough. My grandmother, who helped care for my sister and me while my mother worked, became ill with cancer, and didn’t survive the surgery, dying before I was seven. Losing Grandma devastated me. She read to me and taught me to read before I started first grade. I credit her for inspiring my love of reading, and I credit my mother for encouraging me to turn my ideas into stories.

When I was ten, my neighbor gave me her book club copy of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind and it remains one of my favorite books. But it was Kathleen Woodiwiss’ Shanna and Ashes in the Wind, that hooked me on historical romance and sparked my dream of becoming a published author.

While I primarily write Regency Romance, I enjoy almost any period in American and British history.

Unlooked for partner!

Must say I'm really enjoying this series. This time a Lord and Lady find themselves at the mercy of the matchmaker, the Black Widow of the Lyon's Den, abetted by the
Lady's mother, the Lady's propensity to impulsiveness, and the Lord's inclination to drink himself into a stupor.
Evan Prescott, the fifth Earl of Clarendon, lost his wife in child birth and hasn't recovered. For the past twelve months he's been intent on drowning his sorrows, sans son. So it comes as a shock when his sister returns the child and departs. Evan is forced to set caregiving events into motion. A nanny and a complacent wife seem in order for starters.
Lady Charlotte Grisham pays a visit to Evan to complain about a near accident between his coach and her brother. However as she's a single woman who's visited his home she ends up in BIG TROUBLE! Enter the Black Widow an old friend it seems of Charlotte's mother. (Now that's a huge surprise!)
Novella length, but the story packs a punch, and although there's reams of action, the story doesn't lose focus, cruising to a satisfactory conclusion.

Series: Rakes of Mayhem #0.5/The Lyons Den Connected World
Publication Date: 10/14/20
Number of Pages: 97

This was a lovely, but quick, read that was well-written and well-delivered. I enjoyed it so much that I really wished it had been a bit longer – there were many things I wanted to know and I felt it was rushed.

Evan Prescott, Earl of Clarendon, and his wife were a love match, and when he lost her in childbirth, he went off the deep end. He immediately turned his newborn son over to his sister and her husband and set off on a year-long drunk. After a long night of drinking and gambling, a trio of events and their consequences changed his life – again. First, his sister and her husband arrived and informed him that he was expected to take over the responsibilities of his son, Edward, by the end of the week. Second, he had a whirlwind of a termagant, Lady Charlotte Grisham, berating him because his coach almost ran down her little brother. Third, and perhaps scariest, he received an order to appear before “The Widow” at the Lyons Den. Oh! My!

Lady Charlotte Grisham has had a horrid year as well. She lost her father, the Earl of Romney, her older brother Matthew is missing and her nefarious uncle, Baron Langdale, has had him declared dead – thus declaring her young brother, Jason, as the Earl with Langdale as his guardian. When a speeding coach nearly runs Jason down, it is just a step too far and Charlotte marches to Lord Clarendon’s home to confront him about his behavior.

When Charlotte’s mother discovers a nefarious plan by her brother, Langdale, she approaches an unlikely friend known as “The Widow” for help. And help is what she gets. Both Charlotte and Evan have received a summons from ‘The Widow’ and neither of them expects, or are prepared for, the ultimatum that is given.

With kidnappings and slavers afoot, Charlotte and Jason are both in danger. Can Evan save them – even with the help of his good friend Christopher Angelsey, Earl of Banbury, and ‘The Widow’ helping him? Can they find their own HEA?

I thoroughly enjoyed this read and wanted to know more about the characters. Since this is apparently the prequel to a series, maybe we’ll learn more about Charlotte and Evan in future books. I’m happy to have tried this author and will definitely be looking for more books in the series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Will their initial meeting lead to an unexpected relationship...

This had been an hectic week, more than 10 books to read in 7 days. And then this one popped up in the releases to come this week, plus as a prequel to a series, impossible to miss it.
So this morning before going to work I read half of it, and the second half in between my visits.
It is a cute addition to this world, the prologue was dramatic, the hero has every right to drown his sorrows in imbibing and gambling, until he goes too far.
The heroine, Charlotte would have dreamed to a different outcome but circumstances coerce her hand. If she can’t marry for love, she will have a modicum if a say and at last be intrigued by her future spouse.
Their instant chemistry is sweet, together they are good people, and their attraction will move to something more in no time.
On their journey, there is cheating, betrayal but also friendship and family love.
A sweet with a bit of steam tale of finding love in the least expected context.
Now what this new series will reserve us.

Here's an excerpt!

Prologue

December 1815
Epsom, Surrey, England

What is taking the miserable doctor so long? Evan Prescott, the fifth Earl of Clarendon, poured another measure of brandy and took a long sip. The heartbreaking screaming coming from upstairs had gone on for hours. Rogue tears slid down his face as he stared at the open door to his study, and he brushed them aside. He wanted it to be over for her.
Evan had sent for her family and his, but the weather was making it difficult for anyone to get there. He only hoped the doctor would make it soon. The frosted glass of the large windows drew him, conflicting with the warmth of the room and the brandy. He rubbed some frost away with the side of the hand holding the brandy to peer outside. The pristine beauty of the snow and full moon offered a sharp contrast to the terror he felt inside. Heavy snow covered everything, leaving an almost fairy tale quality to the grounds glimmering beneath the moonlight. It had been snowing all day and showed no signs of letting up.
A throat cleared behind him, and he turned to see his butler, Bernard, standing near him.
“My lord, the doctor has arrived. His carriage got stuck in a snowdrift, and he had to leave it and walk the rest of the way. He is about the size of your father, so I ordered some dry clothes for him. Do you wish to speak with him before he goes upstairs?”
“Thank God! Thank you for getting him some warm clothes. My needs are all upstairs. Please send him to my wife at once.”
A piercing scream rent the air, causing both men to jump.
“Immediately, please. She needs him now.”
“Right away, my lord.” The older man scrambled to move quickly but knew only one speed.
Unable to control his growing frustration, Evan walked to the door and stuck his head into the hall. “Good God, man. Hurry.” He immediately regretted his action, even though the sound of footsteps almost running away from his door felt more satisfying. Taking a deep breath, he walked to the fireplace and leaned against it, staring as the flames licked wood and ricocheted off the back of the chimney and into the night sky. Evan pressed the now warm glass of brandy to his forehead to dispatch a pounding headache, feeling a weakness he had never known before.
“God, please pull her through this,” he said aloud to himself. While he was not deeply religious, Amelia was. “I promise to be a better man; please do not take my wife away.” He swiped at the tears that ran down his face.
Thoughts flooded his mind. Amelia had pronounced the house ready for Christmastide, having been on her feet against his wishes, supervising the footmen and maids as they assembled boughs throughout the house. “It is snowing, and you know how I love it. Will you take me on a sleigh ride?” Amelia had pleaded. She wanted fresh air, tired from the bedrest of the past four months. They even joked about how they may not get another sleigh ride like this for a while after the baby came.
Rather than disappoint her, he ordered the sleigh and horses brought around, and the two took a ride into the village and purchased trinkets for the baby.
His wife wanted a little boy that looked like him, with dark brown hair and brown eyes. Evan wanted a girl, one that had rosy cheeks, blue eyes, and curly blonde hair like her mother. A son could come later if that was what happened. He could cherish a house full of girls that all resembled their mother. His own mother was pushing for a son to carry on the family name, constantly reminding him of their duty to produce an heir. Amelia would gently respond that she would do her best. His wife understood his mother, something he struggled to comprehend, yet was always grateful for.
Memories clawed at him. The two of them had had the road to themselves that afternoon, laughing and kissing as they rode with the snow swirling around them. The clop-clop of the horses’ hooves rhythmically hitting the earth created a romantic, memorable moment.
“This is the most wonderful day, Evan,” Amelia enthused, snuggling closer under the blanket. “Tell me again that you will be all right if this turns out to be a girl instead of a boy.”
Evan lightly touched her pert red nose with his forefinger. “Yes, darling. I love this child, whatever it may be. I mean that.” He kissed her nose, basking in her smile.
They spent the afternoon discussing names again, cuddling together under the thick cover as the driver took them on roads, some with perfectly shaped canopies covered in fluffy snow crystals. It had been a day full of beauty and only the hundredth time they had discussed names in a fortnight. They both liked the name, Jason, after his father. However, she liked Edward, saying it was a potent name, and as his second name, it was her favored choice. They decided if it was a girl, the baby would take Amelia’s mother’s name. By the time they returned, he realized that they had still made no decision on the boy’s name, but it mattered not. They would meet the babe first.
Stark quiet invaded his thoughts. How long has Dr. Pembroke been up there? It is too quiet. Unable to wait another minute, Evan threw his drink into the fire and hurried from his office, taking the steps two at a time, praying. The thirsty wail of a baby caused him to stop and look up. There are no voices. He reached his wife’s room in a trice and flung open the door.
Amelia’s lifeless body lay on sheets still pooled with blood.
“My lord, she . . .” Her maid’s tear-stained face saw him approaching, and she hurried away from the body to stand near the wall.
“No!” he howled, moving Amelia’s hands to his shoulders and pulling her up to him as he cried into her damp blonde hair.
Dr. Pembroke put a hand on his shoulder, and he pushed it away. There was no comfort. He could have no life without Amelia.
A weak cry sounded behind him, and he tried to turn from Amelia to see the baby.
“My lord, you have a son,” the midwife whispered brokenly, offering the small child to him.
Swiping at his face, he looked down at the bundle of wrinkled pink skin. Carefully laying his wife back down, he reached for the baby. Blue eyes framed by tiny wisps of blond hair looked into his face, and a small hand grabbed his finger and held on.
“Edward. You are Edward.” He smoothed back the baby’s hair as the door opened.
His sister had arrived. Through swollen eyes, he watched her glance first at Amelia, then at Edward before rushing to his side.
“She is gone. My Amelia is gone,” he cried hoarsely, thrusting the baby into her arms. “I need air,” he croaked, looking down once more at the bed and noticing the rattle and cloth doll he and Amelia had purchased just that day. “Please understand.”
I am broken.

A story of the heart that captivated me quickly, with the engaging characters of Lady Charlotte and Evan, Lord Clarendon. Both have suffered loss which has changed their lives. Evan with the loss of his wife in childbirth, leaving their small son, and Charlotte with the loss of her father and then her young brother, the heir, having his guardianship taken over by her dastardly Uncle.

But as fate often does, or in this case, Mrs. Dove-Lyon, the Black Widow of The famous Lyon's Den, steps in and tries to save them both! It is known that when she gets involved, lives change. Quickly.

Anna puts her special pen to paper and pulls us into a exciting world of unexpected love, bringing two hearts together as only she can create. Perfect.

I liked this book, it's a good addition to the whole Lyon connected world. Evan has gone to pot after the death of his wife, he's abdicated his responsibility to his son and spends time in the bottom of the bottle. Charlotte is insensed by the near fatal accident to her brother and goes to berate Evan over his folly. Charlotte's mother goes to get help from Mrs Dove-Lyon and she organises a marriage of convenience. This protects Charlotte from her Uncle's machinations and gives someone for Evan to focus on rather than his grief.

The Romance and passion built up gradually and I think you will enjoy this book.

A well written story that started on a very sad note that drew me in & I was routing for Evan to find happiness again. Whilst only a short read, which I read in a sitting it was very well paced & the characters were well fleshed. It also whetted my appetite for the series to follow. I loved Evan who had wallowed for a year but was now able to move forward & Charlotte who whilst dealing with her own grief was prepared to fight for her brother. A lovely read

Lyon's Prey
The Rakes of Mayhem, Book. 5
Anna St.Claire, author

This is the story that started it all.... Evan Prescott, the fifth Earl of Clarendon and Lady Charlotte Grisham. And what a pair the make.

Rakes.... well, I'd call them something more like men in pain and to proud to admit it. Although this story is short, it pulls a mighty punch. I fell in love with the hero of this story as I found him to be quite the savior of not only the lady, but of himself.

Read this enchanting tale. I promise you'll fall in love as I did.

Lyon's Prey by Anna St. Clair is a very short romance between Evan Prescott, Earl of Clarendon and Lady Charlotte Grisham. Evan had spent most of the last year drunk as a response to the death of his wife, Amelia, in childbirth. The child was now nearly a year old, and his sister, Catherine, who had been caring for the child, thought it was time that Evan take back his responsibility. It is on the same day as she informs him and he agrees, that Lady Charlotte arrives at his house to scold him for his carriage nearly killing herself and her younger brother on the road the day before. He was so drunk; he knew nothing of the situation. Charlotte's father had died and her uncle had assumed guardianship of her brother and now was prepared to sign betrothal papers for Charlotte to marry a much older man with a terrible reputation for abuse to women. Her mother retreats to Lady Dove-Lyons, now a friend who had been helped years earlier by her husband. Lady Dove-Lyons sees it is time to Evan to remarry and so arranges it. Of course, it does not go entirely smoothly.

Fun related world with books written by many authors, this Lyons book is simple and romantic. It is a matter of two people who are perfect for one another coming together by accident. Charlotte is a fiery young woman who is extremely protective of her family. It's not been a good year for them and she is inexperienced but feels deeply. Her mother deals with the situation by pretending to be slightly batty, all the while scheming to make things right. Evan is a good man, thrown for a loop, who figures it out in time and is working to make things right. These are terrific characters in a story with lots of loose ends, which were not sewn up as well as they might have been. It is, however, a fun way to spend an afternoon. I recommend it.

I was invited to read a free ARC of Lyon's Prey by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own. #netgalley #lyonsprey

Having read the previous books in this series, Anna St Claire has captured the spirit of the the Lyon's Den and Mrs. Dove-Lyon to perfection. Far from being the Black Widow that society has tagged her with, she is a resourceful woman who sees beyond the gamblers in her den and finds ways of correcting the evils of society. Thus, when Evan Prescott, the Earl of Clarendon falls foul of her due to his besotted behaviour, she neatly sets him up to settle an earlier debt that she has. Lady Charlotte is also furious with Lord Evan because his bad behaviour almost took the life of her younger brother and she takes the unprecedented step of confronting him in his home. Evan discovers that Charlotte's older brother, who is also a friend of his, is missing and he promises to investigate on her behalf. However, he did not anticipate being inveigled into marriage with Charlotte by Mrs. Dove-Lyon, but he finds that he does not resent the idea as much as he thought he would. This short novel can be read in an evening, but it is nevertheless suspenseful and entertaining and comes to a successful conclusion. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

4.5 STARS

This is my first book by this author and I was engaged from the beginning til the end. The ending did seem rushed to me, but still an enjoyable read.

The way this story begins will tug at your heart what the H endured. I felt his anguish waiting for the doctor to appear. I wish there was more time between what happened to his wife and the interactions with the h. I felt a connection to the main and secondary character's.

There is a nasty villain who causes havoc. You understood his motives which didn't come as a surprise.

There is lovemaking within marriage, mildly described once - heat level 2 out of 5. I really enjoy the continuous character of Mrs. Dove-Lyon and in this one she has a big part. Some of the books in the series, she is barely mentioned, but I find I enjoy when she directs the actions of the H/h's in the story. Such a unique story line with this character. These are stand alone stories so you won't be lost.

There IS NO CHEATING! No betrayal for our H/h, but with the villain but that is not a surprise. We get HEA, romance at lightening speed and a tad of spice. (ljb)

A neat blend of romance and action!

Charlotte and Evan, both in possession of a stubborn streak but overflowing with immeasurable kindness, find their fates hopelessly tangled. No sooner do they clash in a wave of indignant anger and shocked remorse then they find themselves whisked into the planning of a secret marriage of convenience with the promise of a future neither one expected to want but are eagerly hoping could be so much more.
Anna St Claire has neatly blended heart, sentiment and the crushing blow of loss with an air of tension, budding romance and the need for imminent action into this quick but well formed novella.
With some intriguing and well crafted characters of great depth along for the ride. Not to mention, the addition of a greedy scheming Uncle to foil. This tale really holds its own, where the tension becomes increasingly more potent because you really come to care for and esteem the characters and not just Charlotte and Evan, but their delightful close family and friends too.
Another really enjoyable encounter with the meddlesome and wily Mrs Dove-Lyon to mark not just a great success for her matchmaking book but as an addition to this series too. A fab read!!
Which only leaves me to hope that this tale doesn't mark the end for its characters but will form as an introduction to a new series. I am now eager to hear more about the other three members of the four musketeers - the charismatic and dependable Christopher, the allusive Lucas and, what I assume to be, the arduous and harrowing adventures of Matt.

Lady Charlotte Grisham wants an explanation from Evan Prescott, Earl of Clarendon, as to why his coach nearly ran down herself and her younger brother. Evan though can’t remember the incident as he was foxed. So begins the path to both of their futures. While forces bring them together, others lurk in the background to keep them apart.

Charlotte and Evan were a good match for each other. They both were able to help each other in different ways with their pasts. With the Lyon’s Den being pivotal in getting them together, will they be able to find love? Will Evan be able to save Charlotte’s brother from an evil family member wishing to do him harm. Very nice story and well written. Charlotte was a fiery little thing, which is what Evan needed to get past his wife’s death and be able to raise his young son. Very nice beginning to the series.

In the year since Evan Prescott, the Earl of Clarendon, lost his wife in childbirth, he has found himself drinking and gambling, despite caring for his son. Immersed in his grief and alcohol, he finds himself making a bet that will change his life. Lady Charlotte Grisham finds herself entering the Lyon’s Den, and coming face to face with Evan, the man whose coach nearly ran down her younger brother. When the two come face-to-face, they find themselves unexpectedly facing an ultimatum from ‘The Widow’.
A great quick read, with all the necessary components – two interesting main characters, a villain and several good friends who will most likely be a part of the ‘Rakes of Mayhem’ series.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

What a very enjoyable story! Lyon's Prey  will keep you spellbound from the moment you begin the journey with Lord Evan and Charlotte until the very end! Anna St Claire weaves a story from beginning to end with threads of intrigue, kidnapping, and mystery. It's an unforgettable romance that brims with tension-building twists, remarkable emotions, characters that are well thought out and you find yourself drawn into their story, a great dialogue and with a good plot. Mrs. Dove-Lyon is match making again! Lord Evan and Charlotte need to marry, but only for convenience... or so they think. As Charlotte's uncle's conspiracy Lord Evan realizes just how important Charlette is to him and as their story unfolds beautifully with drama, passion, grief, trials and tribulations, turmoil and the uncertainties build and tensions escalate that will keep you guessing until the end in this outstanding story!

I was granted an ARC of this book by the author and this is my honest review.

Between her first book and this book, the author has found her flow. She creates an amazing world full of amazing characters. Her writing shows depth and amazing development. This story is a beautiful testament to the genre, a story you will want to read over and over again.

I do recommend this book!

Grand Stories

This is my third book from this series. Felt like the ending was a tad rushed but the story was well told but a times the conversation was a bit childish.
Will definitely be looking for books from St. Claire. Betting her tales will get better. Thanks for sharing you thoughts with me.

Lyon's Prey

Another great tale from the Lyon's Den series. Each one of these stories are fantastic,it's hard to pick a favorite. I fell in love with this one from the first page.

This is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone. It's a nicely written and engaging historical romance novella set around Christmas in 1816 England. An arranged marriage between a widower drowning himself in alcohol and the younger sister of a missing Earl. Charlotte will be a mother to Evan's infant son and in return, he will protect her family from the horrible uncle trying to control her family's finances while they search for her brother. A pleasant way to spend a couple of hours and I enjoyed the story. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in return for my honest opinion. 3.5 stars.

This was fun sweet and sexy, enjoyed it more then anticipated. Refreshing and sweet story, I enjoyed how the characters evolved and how they made it work.
