I’m interested in science because it helps us to understand the world. I enjoy finding out about new things and then working out how to write about them in a way that is both clear (and accurate) but which also conveys my own excitement and interest. I particularly like writing books that are fun, and I have been lucky to have had so many chances to do so.
I was born in Yorkshire in England, but grew up in Stranraer, a small town in south-west Scotland. I graduated from Edinburgh University and then came down to London, where I have lived ever since. I enjoy reading novels, watching films, and walking in the countryside.
I chose Fire Fighter! because this is perfect nonfiction book to read aloud to children when we are talking about occupations. Not everyone will go to college and pursue a college degree. This is a perfect book for kids to see different jobs that are truly needed. We need emergency personnel. This book tells a story of firefighter and what their job looks like. It talks about air masks and how much air it will hold and how long they can go. These are things most do not think about. It goes to show how quick and accurate their work must be so that everyone can walk away safe. This book also uses terms kids may not be familiar with like "outriggers." They steady the truck when the ladder is raised. It shows a true picture of just how important a fire fighter is!
Reason for Reading: son read aloud to me as his reader.
Not too much to say here. Everything you could want in an easy reader. Engaging text and DK's usual exciting photography to compliment. We see inside the fire station and what fire fighters do there; then we are taken on the road with them to a real fire. The pictures of a house on fire are stunning, though could be frightening for younger children. As well as the plot which involves the fire fighters thinking a child may be in the house, exciting but possibly scary for younger readers. Every now and then there is a fact box of information. These use a smaller print and are an aside. My son refused to try and read them saying they were my part. I think the text size change threw him. Other than that no complaints at all. Entertaining and very realistic.
They're simple. They're informative. They're cheap. If your child is too young to read, they're perfectly good read-aloud books.
What more can you ask for when stocking your kid's library?
This is about a fire rescue. It's a little frightening for younger readers - after all, there's a fire and a kid possibly trapped inside - but nobody gets hurt so the fear turns into excitement.
I do wish, though, that the DK publishers would stop putting "fact boxes" on their pages. If the information cannot be integrated into the main story, it should be saved for a special page at the end. It's too distracting for early readers to be pulled out of the main text to read a little box on the side.
I like this book because the fire fighters always knew what they were doing to help this poor kid. The fire chief called Liz and Liz told the chief that she had seen one old house and it was empty for years. Liz, Dan and Anthony ran back to the house. All the fire was gone but the black smoke was everywhere. Anthony was yelling and called Luke. Luke, can you hear me? No one answers, but Luke is safe. This is the best book every.
I like this book because it tells you how to be a fire fighter. It can really hurt you if you would be in a fire so if you read this book you would know what to do in a fire. That is way I like this book because it shows me what to do in a fire.
I like this book because I like when people are helping other people, trying to save other people. They have rules on how to help people live their lives. They have been taught how to save people when there is a fire.
Fight the power!!!!! The fire fighters say as they shoot the waves of water onto the building. Fire Fighters is a good book because it explains how they work and save people's lives i also like how they put their lives in danger to save someone, but hey....that's their job!
Fire Fighter is about people that rescue people from houses that are on fire. Being a fire fighter is a very hard job because you have to wear suits that are very hard to put on. Fire fighters use long ladders to get on top of roofs of houses.
