Can We Talk To God

Rate this book
More than ever, people the world over are making a conscious attempt to find meaning in their lives. The excessive materialism of the late 20th century has proven an inadequate substitute for God. As we have acquired more things, we have developed an ever-growing emptiness. Even the popular media today are telling us there is a great hunger for the inner peace that comes from prayerful communion with a higher power. Can We Talk to God? offers readers a framework for prayer that is compatible with traditional religion, yet moves beyond it in the recognition of a divine presence within each person. This book sets forth the teaching of Ernest Holmes, called Science of Mind, which is a synthesis of the greatest ideas of religion, science and philosophy. Originally published in 1934 as The Ebell Lectures on Spiritual Science, it is as fresh and profound today as it was then, offering readers answers to such important questions as: • What is the nature of God? • What is our relationship to God? • How do we communicate with God? • What is the secret of spiritual power? • Where is humanity headed? • How can a prayer be used to help ourselves and others? Many readers wonder, Can I talk to God? This beautiful book answers with a resounding YES!, and shows readers the way. The method of prayer it teaches will open the door to healthier, happier living.

Ernest Shurtleff Holmes was an American New Thought writer, teacher, and leader. He was the founder of a Spiritual movement known as Religious Science, part of the greater New Thought movement, whose spiritual philosophy is known as "The Science of Mind." He was the author of The Science of Mind and numerous other metaphysical books, and the founder of Science of Mind magazine, in continuous publication since 1927. His books remain in print, and the principles he taught as "Science of Mind" have inspired and influenced many generations of metaphysical students and teachers. Holmes had previously studied another New Thought teaching, Divine Science, and was an ordained Divine Science Minister. His influence beyond New Thought can be seen in the self-help movement.

There are two things you can be guaranteed to get from any Holmes book. One, a stream of consciousness writing that often looks as if he was working through his ideas as he wrote them, resulting in not a few contradictory statements and the usage of terms to mean different things without telling you. Two, complete brilliance stemming from a wonderful mind concerned with awakening humanity to its inherent joy. This book is not "The Secret," nor should it be confused with such, however similar some of the ideas may be. The concern here is not in a dualistic mind over matter, but in a restructuring of perspective on how mind views the world within which it functions. The result is a complete overhaul of the shame-based god of much of human history into a deity of which we are a part and a manifestation of, just as all of the universe is. There is much here to be meditated upon and discussed.

I have been on a personal faith journey my entire life. I have studied various religious perspectives and find great meaning in many of them. I have always come back to Christianity, but find aspects of it unfulfilling and even divisive. The Science of Mind religion offers, for me, a great resource to express my Christian beliefs. Thoughtful, challenging, and inspiring, Ernest Holmes has founded a religion, a perspective, I find refreshing and spirit-led. I do warn the reader. Ernest Holmes is not an easy read. One must spend time thinking, reflecting, and, praying, and using those concepts he promotes. this is one of several books he has written. They all open the mind to new possibilities.
