This biography of Johnny Appleseed is intended for children in kindergarten to second grade. It gives a brief history of John Chapman's (Johnny Appleseed) early life and how his large extended family led him to go outside to find peace. He planted apple trees to sell to settlers for cash, food, or shelter. Johnny Appleseed is a likable character who is seen as a boy who had a tough start in life. The language used in the book is age appropriate and the illustrations throughout are very colorful. I believe the children would enjoy the pictures in this book. The theme of this book of hope is clearly stated as Johnny Appleseed travels to different states spreading his seeds as well as God's word. The book also displays all of the important dates in Johnny Appleseed's life in the back which is a nice quick reference. I would use this book with young children in a few different situations. I could use it in a science class when speaking about seeds being planted. I could also use it when teaching the children about hope. One final thought would be that I could use this book as a reference when teaching about the different types of fruits.
