Personal Reaction: I really liked reading the book entitled Yao Ming. It told the story of the professional basketball players life in a clear and concise way and included a variety of photographs of Yao Ming throughout his life.
Read aloud: This book would be great to read aloud to the class when starting a unit on biographies. It would provide students with an example of the different kind of people they can do biographies on, as well as act as a resource if Yao Ming was who they wanted to do their biography on.
Independent Reading: This biography would be best use an an independent read for second or third graders who are either interested in basketball or for a biography project. The book has a lot of great information, not only about Ming's basketball career but also his home life in China, his move to the United States, and how he became a successful basketball player.
Literary Elements: The book is written in a third person point of view, with clear and concise language. Key elements found throughout the book are setting, characterization, and plot, and could all easily be taught or explained using Yao Ming. If students were struggling with point of view, this book would be a great way for them to gain a better understanding of it.
Yao Ming retired from basketball after playing for the Houston Rockets for a long time. Unfortunately, he and teamate Tracy McGrady did not lead the Rockets into the playoffs.
