Using a picture book which depicts Bible verses, Owen tries to find his way through the woods to his father's house, leading him to experience adventures through the deep woods, an impassible stream, and mysterious sounds and sights along the way.
Owen's Walk by Karen Hill tells the story of a young boy named Owen who is visiting his grandmother. Owen must go home to his father but is afraid to be alone. His grandmother prepares a backback full of special items that Owen uses on his trip, including a "Book of Signs" that guides him when he is unsure of which way to go. The reader follows Owen on his adventure until he makes it home to his father's house. The book also contains a fold-out of the path home that Owen took, the item's in his adventure backpack and the "Book of Signs" with Bible verses. The story does include references to Bible verses and Owen says a prayer when scared, so it may not be appropriate for all libraries or readers. Similarities can also be made between Owen's walk and a Christian's walk in following God. The illustrations are done in soft, muted watercolors and work together nicely with the story.
Grandma prepares her young grandson for his first walk home on his own with a backpack fitting an adventure and wise advice. Favorite quote: Owen hesitated. "But...Mimi, I've never gone by myself. What if I get lost! I'm just a kid, you know." "Don't be afraid. You have everything you need to get home. Your father went ahead to make a path for you. Just stay on your father's path and you'll get along fine." Prov. 23:19 Is. 41:10 Joshua 1:9 Psalm 18:2 2 Samuel 22:29
This book reminds us we must have child like faith as we go before our father. Owen had to follow the path marked out for him that his grandma prepared for him. This is similar to us following the path God laid out for us.
