I'd forgotten how much I love this series (once you get past all the confusing 't' terms: Talyan,Teshuva .... good thing there is a glossary) I like the possessed warriors with the damaged souls who find a mate to fill in the holes. This time the pairing is a crippled former missionary, Jonah, and Nim, the stripper with her own scars. And I was surprised that even though the heroine strikes out on her own to face danger and certain death on several occassions, she did it without coming across as 'too stupid to live'.

Sometimes when I really like a book it is hard to articulate why, this time I think the reason is that it is all the details, and the depth of the characterization for the heroine Nim that made the story so good, but hard to talk about. Surprisingly, as a stripper Nim is already a warrior, she uses her body and sensuality - ala Eve and complete with snake - as a weapon against men. I like that in this series the females are warriors too. And a scene or two here show that all the women (Nim and the past heroines) are indeed a force to be reckoned with - an almost apocalytic one, without their mates to temper their combined power.

So now I can't wait for the next one, By Darkness Undone, though I am a bit disappointed that Ecco isn't getting his story yet and Slade is bringing in a new pair for the next books. What I'd really like to see in the future though is a demon possessed warrior women with the angel Cyril Fane - he's a contradicting mess of stick-up-the-behind with a hidden sense of humor and a hot car. Since this series builds on the characters from previous stories, I think it might be better for readers new to the series to start with the first book Forged of Shadows: A Novel of the Marked Souls.

Favorite Quote: “When I was alone, I prayed for you-the notion of you-even though I don’t believe anymore. I dreamed of you, even when I was afraid to sleep.”

Blurb: Once a righteous missionary man, Jonah Walker now endures immortality with nothing but a body built for battle and a heart set on retribution. But his last devastating fight left him wounded beyond healing—and his only chance for redemption lies with a fallen woman whose passion burns through the shadows... (Goodreads)

Jonah Walker is an immortal warrior, fighting against evil for the past 80 years. When he was possessed by his demon he thought he lost everything that mattered to him. During a recent battle he lost a vital part of himself and now questions his position as a warrior and as a man. When he is called to his female Tayla, he’s afraid he will fail her as he has everyone else.

Naughty Nymphette (Nim) is a stripper who has lost all faith in humanity. Accepting of her failings, she feels the world would be better off gone. When Jonah appears to her, claiming she is demon possessed and his “right hand” she thinks he is insane. Nim is attracted to Jonah but wraps herself in sarcasm and refuses to surrender her heart. As these two begin the intricate dance towards love and redemption, they will both have to learn to trust themselves and each other if they are to survive what is coming for them.

Vowed In Shadows is the third book in the Marked Souls series and the best so far. Ms. Slade’s demons and angels makes for a fascinating complex world when combined with the idea of repentant demons allying with human men and women to fight evil and keep it from crossing into our world. In here we are introduced to a pair of protagonists who’s extreme opposite natures produces a volatile relationship filled with passion, humor, and anger. Ms. Slade starts this story out with a bang and we ride that speeding bullet until the very end.

I love the premise of an unrepentant stripper paired with a righteous man. Ms. Slade plays with the idea that there is no concrete good and evil but rather shades of gray that depend entirely upon the one who is contemplating it. Our stripper isn’t a paragon of good living or faith. She is flawed and has issues that have warped her views of the world and men in general. She comes into Jonah life and blows it wide open. Jonah’s own morality and misgivings has left him in a rigid a shell. He is torn between wanting Nim and feeling betrayed by that very want. Watching them open their wounds is both painful and enlightening. I loved the sharp word play they engage in. It’s as much humorous as it is telling. They chemistry explodes from page one and only gets more intense as the story progresses.

Engaging dynamics combined with explosive action and suspense creates a world you cannot put down. The supporting characters are intense, well developed, and intertwine with our protagonists to give us a rich, full bodied story. I like that we get more one on one interaction and dialogue between the members of the league in here. Ms. Slade introduces some new characters that promises some interesting developments for the future of the league.

The villain is a study in contrasts. Condemned to a life he had no choice in you cannot help but pity him; knowing that his defeat will only prolong his agony.

The ending is fraught with tension and suspense. Ms. Slade does a wonderful job of slowly building up to the ending for a tense suspenseful finale that leaves you breathless. I truly enjoyed this story and I recommend this series to everyone who enjoys a noir PNR centering around life, death, love, and redemption. I will certainly be looking forward to the 4th Marked Souls story- to be announced at a later date.

Be sure to read the back. Ms. Slade thoughtfully provides a glossary to terms used in the book and a small amusing exchange between Archer and Sera (Seduced In Shadows).

MY THOUGHTS
Vowed in Shadows, third in the Marked Souls series, is a story of intensity and complexity, its pages home to a dark world where demons run rampant–some seeking to harm and others to repent–but all coming together in a gripping battle revealed to us chapter by chapter. Fighting what seems to be a losing battle is a set of characters who are intriguing in their circumstances, their possession by demons who wish to make amends a conceptually fascinating idea, and their relationships to one another are both humorous and sobering. Their distinct personalities often clash and result in witty banter, but the seriousness of their mission and the reality of their demon-ridden lives always lurks beneath the levity of their vocal interactions. Ms. Slade has written a story infinitely creative and mesmerizing in its beautiful grimness, each book a bit stronger than the one before as the unusualness of the world settles in and the strength of the characters comes to the forefront.

Heroine Nim exudes confidence and sensuality, her naked body often used as a weapon to distract men from seeing the emotional scarring that pulses beneath a thin layer of flesh. She has a sharp tongue and a quick wit, frequently putting people in their places before they have the opportunity to make an attempt at breaching the armor she wears like a second skin. While her mouth is a constant source of amusement, her continued denial of Jonah's affection for her is a bit frustrating as she proceeds to clutch to the familiarity of lust as opposed to a true and honest connection. Though her resistance is certainly understandable in the beginning as her life is completely ripped from under her without her conscious knowledge, it becomes a bit grating when Jonah ventures to make his feelings known yet she refuses to let even his deepest sentiments pierce that well-polished and seemingly metal-plated exterior.

Jonah seems to be a man of dual natures, his previous life of dedicated missionary work alongside his wife in fairly direct contrast to the life of a man possessed by a demon and fighting demonic entities on a daily basis. His resolute determination not to be entertained by Nim's many charms is satisfying, and reading as she sweetly corrupts him bit by bit with a sexual tension that positively sparks between them is no hardship. We can't help but wish his communication with Nim might be a bit more open though, his expression of feelings for her often done so only internally through a personal monologue as opposed to externally where he might actually be able to more thoroughly convince her of the veracity of his statements. While he does eventually own his emotions and admit them aloud, so much of the time they spend arguing or in weighted silence might have been avoided if honesty and openness played a bigger role in an otherwise enjoyable romantic pairing.

It should be known that Ms. Slade's world is extremely complicated, and while things are a bit clearer in this third book, the first in the series is weighed down with a significant number of unfamiliar terms and complex differentiations between evil demons, repentant demons, and all the specific types of each on either side of the war. Even in Vowed in Shadows, where terms are no longer quite as burdensome, the extensive descriptions of fantastical creatures at times can be overwhelming, our minds stuttering and struggling to create an image of what's being described but often failing to do so. Her impressive characterization keeps the story from being lost in an unknown darkness though, and I look forward to whatever the future holds for these fighters.

Missionary man Jonah Walker lost everything when he was possessed by a demon. He’s spent his immortal life fighting the relentless battle against evil. In his last fight he lost a vital part of himself and started questioning his existence. Now duty calls him to train a newly demon-possessed woman, but he’s not sure he’s up for the challenge, for he has nothing left to offer.

Nim “Naughty Nymphette” Hamlin spends her nights stripping for money. She’s positive the world’s not worth saving. However, when she attracts the attention of a demon and a saint, she’s thrust into a world she never knew existed. She’s irresistibly drawn to Jonah, but isn’t willing to give him more than no strings attached sex. But as danger surrounds them, they both have to face the mistakes of their past so they can come together to save the future.

This is book 3 in the Marked Souls series and I recommend reading them in order, as each story builds upon things that happen in the previous books. This book opens with a scorching hot meeting between the two main characters and doesn’t stop burning up the pages until the end. I loved the polarization between a missionary turned demon hero and a stripper heroine. They balanced each other well as they explored the ideals of good versus evil, redemption and forgiveness. Ms. Slade isn’t afraid to break out of the mold of the pure and innocent heroine and gives us a character with depth, flaws and conflicted feelings in Nim.

This is a multifaceted, dark and sober book. The characters aren’t perfect and it’s not clear cut what makes someone good or bad. The main characters have inner battles waging as well as the overarching war with a demon trying to destroy the veil between worlds and unleash unspeakable evil. Romance weaves in and out of the intense and intriguing plot lines and provides a brief respite of hope to the characters and readers alike. If you want a thought provoking read, this is a series not to be missed.

Did not finish. Read the first 120 pages. There were three scenes of fighting monsters that were not described well, too vague. I had no idea what was going on. The character development was boring. Reading was tedious. The hero and heroine are humans, but each one has a demon that entered them and resides inside. A demon had partially entered Nim before the book starts and then finished entering her while Jonah was present. There is no showing of Nim’s feelings, thinking, or reactions during her possession. Instead she sees a weird tattoo on her leg. Jonah tells her what has happened. Then we find out after the fact that her demon left a short necklace chain in her room. She gave it away. Again this was told, not shown. Now they are on a mission to find it. This book feels like a directionless dream.

I just finnished the third book. I am so glad that she put Johna with someone that made him feel!! Nem, was so funny. She really keeps Johna on this toes. As well as keeping all of the other Talla on there toes too. Nem really keep Leam hopping.

If you are looking for something that will keep you guessing this series is it. I am so glad that my Libary recommed Jessa to me.

If you like Renée Raudman in the Kate Daniel series you will love her in this one.

Started out trashy and tacky. The main character had potential right until the point she cut her dreds off. Ridiculously graphic violence and sex scenes. One or the other maybe. Super tacky. Vile Nope. Had 50 m9 s at x1.75 speed and still could not finish. This story is rotting gore imbued trash

Jessa Slade has been very sneaky, slowly building her overall arc until finally in Vowed in Shadows the story bursts forth like a flamethrower (what you thought I would say a rose in spring? This is Urban Fantasy it needs a flamethrower!). The first two books were compelling, sneaking into your consciousness and not letting go but Vowed is not so subtle. It smashes through with Liam’s Hammer. Instantly compelling, fast paced and furious! A fabulous read!

Jonah Walker had it all, a man of God, with a mission, a wonderful wife and goal.. then his demon came and took it all. When death came knocking he lived for his wife, unknowingly inviting in his demon. Over the next 50 years he watched her die.. Upon her death he escaped the jungles of Africa and joined the league. A somber, rigid man holding on to his self righteousness. A shell of a man, a mockery. Not just soulless but lifeless without hope. Determined to give his demon the redemption it desires, hoping that it brings his as well. In the last great battle, Jonah lost more than his soul, he lost a hand. Now he is embittered and battle worn looking for some redemption of his own.

Nim Hamlin, the Naughty Nymphette, a stripper with a shell so hard finding a way inside is all but impossible and yet a demon made a promise and Nim was seduced.. Sure she is no man’s redemption she battles herself almost more than she battles the demons. Possessed by a Thrall Demon, Nim has the ability to free their souls.. she literally enthralls them and firmly believes that, that is all she is good for. To enthrall the Demons, to use her wiles.. to seduce. While she can vaguely understand that as a mated talyan she is bond to Jonah, that their bodies work together she is sure there is no room for love.

Jonah and Nim battled so many personal demons the fight with Corvus, the enemy possessed by a Djinn Demon is almost anticlimactic. Please note, I said almost. It was fun watching the two of them learn to compromise. For the rigid, moral, missionary to let go of his control enough to appreciate the woman he has been given and for the hardened, wounded, stripper to learn that not all dreams are nightmares. It was fun to see who would cave first and equally surprising when you discover who did (no, I am not going to tell you that would be a HUGE spoiler)..

The battle against Corvus was excellent.. a fantastic twist in encasing the demons, penning them until trap after trap was sprung. Just like computer hackers, Evil always seems to be one step ahead of Good. The talyans were given mate-bonds and yet Corvus figured out their importance first. The female Talyans were given gifts yet it was Corvus who figured out how to use those gifts first. It seems the Talyans were always playing catch up.. Determined but unaware, unsure, acting on instinct rather than knowledge. Hampered by lack of knowledge of female Talyans. It was interesting to see the women’s reasoning as to why the original female Talyans disappeared. Interesting and I think accurate.

As this story progresses it will be fun to see if there are more females out there. We know the next story, Darkness Undone is about a rogue female Talyan but we until the book is read we know nothing about her or where she came from. The inclusion of the angels was a fun addition.. I loved the fact that Cyril Fane, while supposed to be a good guy, literally, is a smug, arrogant, pain.. Yeah it will be fun getting to know Cyril and watch him fall. In this book, I also really fell for Ecco, until now I thought him a rather useless appendage, all snarly and angry, biter and tough. Now, I find him rather endearing and am hoping for him to find his Talyan soon.

This series is one of those that starts out slow, the first book or two you read the books almost in spite of yourself. While compelling there is so much world building going on that sometimes you get confused or frustrated. Even though the main stories are excellent and the characters are wonderful.. in Vowed the story finally evens out. It continues with the powerful characters and the story arc just flows around them.. This book makes this series a MUST read.

The heroine knows about the dark side of life but she's unprepared to discover she's inadvertently granted permission for a demon to possesses her. Though she's generally a content woman albeit more than a little tortured, she's had a very hard life. Being raped as a young woman and having no one believe her or do anything about it, she vowed to always be in control of her own body. She does this in a, I believe very empowering way. She strips for a living. She makes man desire her and want her but she knows that she holds all the body and all the cards.

Until she meets the hero. Though he can't hide his attraction to her, she's not used o dealing with such a prudish and missionary man, especially not one possessed by his own demon.

The hero is a study in contradictions and it's something that grates on her nerves, frustrates her to no end but also intrigues her. The hero's story is a sad one. Once a missionary in Africa, he was bitten by a spider and lay dying before his beloved wife commanded he live as she had nothing to live for if he wasn't with her. So, in his weakness, he was possessed by a demon and now lives in constantly misery of what he's become and the loss of his soul.

On top of that, he's recently sacrificed his hand to save the life of a friend and now feels like he has nothing to offer to the demon fight and feels completely useless. Until the heroine. She makes him feel powerful an needed as he guides her through her own possession and controlling her new powers. She looks to him like a hero and his ego badly needed the encouragement. Though she's very frustrating and flippant about her new demon possession and has a tendency to strip off her clothes because she knows it bothers him, she's also loyal and, as it happens, a very capable warrior. In fact, he's almost threatened by her strength that makes him seem that much more pitiful. He was so unsure and very much an innocent in the ways of woman.

I absolutely loved this story. I loved the heroine and hero with such a passion. They were both so completely different but at the same time they were so very much alike. Both had trauma in their lives and live with the daily struggle of their memories. Both used their words like a knife to hurt the other person to deflect the hurt off themselves but both needed the other with such a ferocity. I loved the way they spoke to each other, it was like poetry. I so freakin' recommend this story to paranormal romance readers and to those who doubt the genre can be anything other that smutty vampires. This book is amazing!!

Vowed in Shadows by Jessica Slade
Paranormal Romance –April 5th, 2011
4 stars

Vowed in Shadows is the third book in the Marked Souls series. As part of a complex series it is best to have read at least one of the prior books.

Jessica Slade quickly jumps into action with a surprisingly sensual opening as the heroine, a stripper tries to seduce the hero!!
In this series, demons who want to repent possess special humans and give them supernatural powers. Each of the demons has a different power and these demons want to work towards doing good deeds.

In this story, the wounded hero, Jonah was a religious man before his life changed dramatically. Since then, he merely exists for his duty. This changes when he is assigned to help a young woman named Nim. Nim is a stripper with a scarred past. She is intrigued by the man who has been constantly watching her and hopes to ‘play’ him for money. But what she doesn’t realize is that Jonah is here to help guide her transition. For a demon has targeted her for possession. They soon discover although they are seemingly opposites they are actually well matched and Nim is Jonah’s mate. Together they can become a powerful team if each can open up to each other and let their wounds heal.

This was a solid story and I loved idea of demons that possess humans. Nim is a very earthy woman confident in her sexuality but still vulnerable inside. She doesn’t believe in love or fairy tales. I couldn’t relate to her as much as the sexy hero. But she is integral to Jonah. Jonah has kept all his emotions bottled up inside and needs someone like the outrageous Nim to bring them out. They balance each other well as his dependability is a contrast to Nim’s unstable past. I liked how Jonah seemed like a rock. He is very steady and honorable even as she tempts him! The attraction between them is electrifying from the start. I appreciated how they depended on each other despite their apparent differences.

This was enjoyable read for lovers of edgy and dark paranormal romances. But I think I liked the prior book a bit more because I related to the heroine a bit more in Forged in Shadows. But I still found this book an entertaining and satisfying paranormal fix.

"Vowed in Shadows" by Jessa Slade. Book 3 in the Marked Souls series.

I'm giving this book 2 stars like I have all the other books in the series so far but I will say I liked this one a bit more than the others (I would have given it 2.5 stars). This book focused on talya warrior Jonah and a stripper named Nim.

Jonah has lost his fighting hand do to a terrible accident (in one of the previous books) and now chooses to use a hook for a hand. He feels like he is of little use to the talyan warriors he fights with now because his teshuva (his repentant demon) is now not in sinc with him anymore. But his demon feels the pull to a female talya. As a former missionary, he is very surprised to find her dancing on a stage as a stripper.

Nim is being stalked. "Captain Hook" has been coming to the club where she dances for a week now but only to see her. She's had enough and decides to confront him, in her own special way. The heat between them is undeniable. Before she knows what's happening, she's thrown into a world of demons and angels and is expected to be Jonah's bond-mate. How the hell is she supposed to be "good" when she knows she's "bad"?

I liked this book better than the others because the connection between Jonah and Nim just seemed more real. You could feel the chemistry between them and feel the emotional termoil each of them faces as their relationship progresses. The overall storyline was good. I was actually surprised how this book ended. I thought that this would be the end of a trilogy but there is still one full book and one novella left in the series (as I'm writing this review, not sure if the author is writing more or not).

Overall, I liked it. I will read the next book and novella just to see what happens next.

This book is my favorite of the series so far and a big part of that is due to Nim. She is such a fun character, I loved her! She was sassy, had a razor sharp tongue, was flip, and didn't take much serious, just what the league needs to shake them up. I also felt sorry for her, her past was horrible and you understood that much of what I liked about her was all about her putting up walls so no one could get close to her and hurt her again.

I really think that would take someone just like Jonah to get through to her. With his hook on the end of his arm, he looked just as damaged, at least on the outside, as she was. Once you get to know the characters better you realize just how perfect they are for each other. Jonah needs more fun in his life, someone to teach him that it is ok to have your past and the people in it, but it is even better to let go of it. Nim really needs a place to fit in and a person who will always be there for each other. I also found it funny that each of them thought they weren't good enough for the other, Nim thought she was a whore, while Jonah didn't think he could protect her, neither of which was true.

I also loved the 3 women together. You can just tell the 3 of them are going to be dangerous in more ways than one. I am sure that they will continue to shake things up.

After this book, I am now really looking forward to the next book!

The third book in the Novel of the Marked Souls series did not disappoint.

This was a great addition to the series - love the heroines in the stories, they think for themselves, take on all challenges, do not take any "crap" from anyone - even their mates. They are so independent and it makes for a great story.

Vowed in Shadows is about the talya Jonah who has found his mate in a stripper named Nim. They are the most unlikely pair since he walked a path of "faith" in his former life and she has been on a completely different path (think stripper). They meet while she is going through the transition however he does not get to know her in time for her to give up (sell) an important item they now need to retrieve. Nim is very receptive to the new life - probably because she does not care for her old one and I believe she likes belonging to something or someone. It takes her awhile to find the feeling of belonging because even though she puts up a great "front" about being a strong independent women - she is very insecure inside.

With Angelic help the league fights the evil Corvus to retieve the lost item. All in all a great story - can't wait for the next one - I see from the back of the book we meet a new Talya - yeah.

Someone sent me a copy of this book that they won through a contest and I was so excited to get started on it. This is a really great series that has fantastic romance, adventure and drama to it.

The main character in this book is Jonah Walker, who is still trying to deal with his loss that happened in the previous book. He feels that his mate is out there and he finds an unlikely woman who is supposed to walk into battle with him. Her name is Nim, and she's a stripper. Nim is everything Jonah has trouble accepting, her lack of faith and her ability to tempt those out of innocence but he can't help his attraction to her. Together they have to move past their own sins to help save the city from things more evil than themselves

I really enjoy these books because they are quick and entertaining reads. This book felt a little edgier and sexier than the rest, I'm not sure if it's because I love Jonah and have been waiting for his book, or if the author is moving in a different direction. Whatever the reason, I definitely loved this book and can't wait for the next installment. Hopefully it's about Echo!

This is the third book in Jessa Slade's Marked Souls series and probably the best so far. I really enjoyed this one and it wasn't as starkly depressing as the first two. I felt like the ending gave the hero and his heroine a happy ending for once. This marked the introduction of an angle into the mix so I'm guessing at some point he'll get a girl as well. This makes me think I won't be so reluctant to read or listen to the next one. I read this one but I'm pretty sure I have the next one on audible.

All in all, I <3 this book, probably the best in the serious. 3 down, one more to go.
I absolutely love the couple in this story. They are perfectly matched to each other, completely balancing each other out. Nim, the sexy former stripper, teaches Jonah how to live again. Jonah, the African missionary who spent almost 80 years, sitting and watching his wife slowly die, shows Nim how to trust people again.
There were some sections that are slow and a little hard to read and the final battle is a little anti-climactic, but I absolutely love this story!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I've been following this series and I have to admit I'm a sucker for wounded soul stories--even though I don't usually like demon possession stories. This is the third installment in Jessa Slade's urban fantasy Marked Souls series. In this one "Naughty Nymphette" faces off with a missionary man. Both are possessed with demons, but each one handles it differently. Though on the face of it, both the setting and the relationship are impossible, Jessa Slade makes it work.

Despite a somewhat scattered plot, it was a fun story. I enjoyed the non-traditional heroine with her irrepressible mouth. The hero struck me as a bit of a self-pitying kill-joy but he showed signs of geting over it.

The concept is one I've seen before: a group of chosen part-demon warriors trying to hold back the apocalypse. But Jessa Slade pulls off some interesting characters and an enjoyable plot to put it in.

A fun light read for the weekend.

Pretty good PNR; better, smarter than a lot of what's out there. The world Slade builds is compelling and complex and her warriors use more brain than brawn in their battle against the forces of evil. The second book was too similar to the first one, but in this third entry the buttoned up scholar and the street savvy stripper are originals. Excessive repetition of the unique terminology is on the annoying side but narrator Renee Raudman makes it work.

I'm not so sure what review should I give. Honestly, I'm sure this book is good for some people bur for me.... I've to drag myself to finish up this book. It was just not get me all excited or curious to read till the end of the book. Maybe it's just not my kind of book.

Great read! I loved the storyline of Nim. I'd love to see her future books go back and forth between women and men as the main characters.

I tried
Really ...
I did.

I just could generate any empathy to basically unlikeable characters

I got to page 95

and then I found more interesting books to read...
