Sophie is in the last term of Year 11. She's used to moving around with her accountant father and free-spirited mother, so the move to a small town on the South Coast in NSW doesn't seem too out of the ordinary – at first.
But things are changing around Sophie. A new school means a new start – and she's tired of her mother's superstitions and control. When she's recruited to the ranks of the school's popular girls, Sophie seizes the opportunity to remake herself... and unleashes forces a lot more threatening than whether she can hide her true nerd nature from the high school bitch brigade.
As Sophie negotiates teenage preoccupations with overprotective parents, whether her pyjamas are cool enough for a sleepover and the school-ground politics of secrets, lies and faithless boyfriends, something dark is hovering on the edge of her vision. The school Goth delivers her an ominous warning, strange birds seem to be following her... and fate keeps reuniting her with the dangerous bad boy with a past that nobody wants to talk Brody Meine.
Violent storms suddenly erupt, windows explode in the classroom, and a fire engulfs an entire street. And all these escalating, demonic happenings seem to take place when Sophie and Brody Meine are together...
One of Australia's most capricious and engaging writing talents, Van Badham's career spans journalism, comedy, drama, arts criticism, genre fiction, speechwriting, music theatre and cabaret, non-fiction, writing for television and radio, and even poetry. Her first novel, Burnt Snow was published by PanMacmillan in 2010, while her plays include the award-winning The Bull, the Moon and the Coronet of Stars, Muff and a stage adaptation of Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber, as well as Sydney Theatre Company's box-office smash, Banging Denmark<. Van was born in Sydney and completed degrees in theatre at the University of Wollongong, the University of Sheffield (UK) and the Victorian College of the Arts. A former literary manager of both London's Finborough Theatre and Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne, she has been a regular columnist for The Guardian since 2013, and has appeared a frequent guest of both The Drum and Q&A on the ABC.
I managed to get a proof of this just before it was published, as I work in a bookshop, so I carried an enormous unedited manuscript around for a week until I finished it. I didn't even care, the book was THAT good! The book is Australian, which is nice for a change and I immediately liked the main character, Sophie. It's been a while since I've read any really good paranormal young adult fiction, but this was brilliant. All the while when odd things are happening, you're kept guessing and it isn't plainly spelt out for you from the start, like some OTHER books *cough* Twilight! *cough*
I was warned before reading this that the only bad thing about the book is that I have to wait until next September for the second book to be published! This is definitely an issue, I had one of those sad moments when the book was over and I knew I wouldn't be reading about Sophie for some time.
Otherwise, I literally have nothing bad to say about this book, it was FANTASTIC!!
Update 6/4/14 The second book just never came out ... It just never happened! It breaks my heart whenever I think about it. Whyyyyy? I want to know what happened to Sophie!
Further Update 3/6/16 I still think about this book from time to time (especially as it often pops up on Dymocks clearance racks) and I'm still sad that the second book never came out. But honestly, even if it did, I think this ship has sailed. I'd have to re-read Burnt Snow and basically I can't be bothered. This could have been an awesome series but readers aren't going to wait around for this long.
I think this is one of those books that plays out like a movie when you read it. From the first line I was compelled to read and read until I had finished it and then I had that devastating feeling like I'd lost a friend (luckily I think that there will be more!). I really enjoyed the whole world that was created and fell in love with the characters- in particular a Mr Brody Meine...but I won't spoil it! I highly recommend this book. Anyone who enjoys an exciting read complete with the supernatural, the romantic, the fiery, the passionate and the mysterious should definitely seek it out. You won't be disappointed. Except when you realise that you've read it all and will have to wait for more!
I'm sorry, but I really did not like this book at all. The only reason I finished it is due to the fact it was set right near where I live and that was cool, seeing the mentions of places. However, the two-page paragraphs and a book that was 650 pages long but could have been 250... No thank you. Besides, most of the characters aren't well developed and no real bonds seem to be formed. Then all of a sudden she's on with this Brody dude and they've only spoken ten words to each other.
I wouldn't bother wasting your time reading. I keep most of my books, but I'm really close to chucking this in the bin. It'll probably just end up at the charity store.
I'm going to start off this review by saying that it was a massive dispointment. I really wanted to love this book, and looking at the reveiws I was certain that I would. But I didn't. Not remotely. Why? well, although the plot was interesting and original I am just sick of the whole: - girl moves to a different town for some reason -starts new school - sees mysterious boy - he has some secret -hes hot -falls for him -he's dangerous for her and so on, I hope you get the idea. The characters in the book were flat, boring and had no depth to them and Sophie kind of annoyed me in parts of the book. The romance was....Forced. Theres no other way to explain it. It was. The storyline, overall was good although there were many, many boring parts in it and It took awhile to actually get into the story. Overall the rating is 1.5 but I rounded it up to 2 because I'm nice.
This was amazing! It was unbelievable. I have to hand it australian authors, they really know how to pace their novels. I remember picking it up at first and wondering '700 pages?!?' but then as I read the first page, then the second, then the third, then the first twenty I was hooked, Van Badham really does catch the readers attention.
So Sophie Morgon is the new girl at Yarrindi and Brody is the dark loner bad boy with a history. This is no Twilight novel. There is suspense, there is fear, there is a mystery and a dangerous love.
Amazingly written, suspenseful, beautiful, and a complete page turner, I even stopped reading Maureen Johnson's Name of the Star to read this!
Update June 4th 2015: Annoyed, where is my White Rain sequel to this awesome book???
GREAT BOOK!!! I have read a lot of young adult-paranormal fiction and lately all the books have had the same Blah storyline, And you already know everything that is going to happen...Girl meets vampire. Girl falls in love with vampire. Girl has vampires baby. Teen angst and so on. But this book was a breath of fresh air, and I loved not knowing what was going to happen *sigh*. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Oh and also an Australian author! I'm lovin the Australian authors :D
TW Mention of SA, abuse, manipulation, homophobia and homophobic slurs.
The overlying plot of the book was really good and drew me in a lot. However Sophie the MC was friends with a group of girls one of who dates Garth an extremely homophobic and violent boy. On page 219 he uses the f slur when referring to how a guy their group doesn't like dresses and later after another girl outs another one of their friends to a few girls they ADMIT that if Garth knew he would get violent with this closeted boy who he is currently friends with. All of this is acknowledged and not really disagreed with by Sophie.
She also finds out that her father trapped and spelled her mother into being with him years before Sophie herself was born and that fact is definitely excused with 'people in love can do crazy things' like that makes it OK. She still finds comfort in her father and goes to him for emotional support despite what her mother tells her about him.
There is also Joel a high school boy who is obsessed with Sophie's friend Fran who manipulates Sophie into giving Fran a bracelet from him with a love spell that causes her to be "in love" with him that he then takes full advantage of. The story doesn't specifically say that Joel has sex with Fran while she is under the spell but his characterisation does imply that he definitely would.
Now potentially these thing would be resolved in the second book, she would cut contact with Belinda and Garth, we would be told the true story of her mother and father and there would be consequences for the abuser, and Sophie would be able to break the love spell on Fran and punish Joel accordingly. But there is no second book. Despite say in the back of book 1 that the sequel would be out in 2011 it is now 2022 and it does not exist which leads me to conclude that the MC is homophobic and an abuser apologist.
Really hoping the second book does come out and proves me wrong.

Okay, so I have extremely mixed emotions about this book. I liked it and I didn’t like it. While I’ll admit that it was detailed, fairly well written and exciting at times, there were also times when I was just plain bored and eager for it to finish. It seemed like everything happened over the course of the story, and yet nothing happened at all. If that possibly makes any sense? I also felt like the author spent a lot of time explaining things or having certain parts in the book that weren’t really necessary. Some parts I felt could have been left out. While the story was always full of mystery and suspense, most of the time I was just annoyed over how long it took for things to actually happen. There were some moments when the story would get really good, that I found myself really, really wanting to love the book, and yet I just couldn’t. Sophie was an alright main lead, although she wasn’t anything overly special. She wasn’t very memorable in my mind. I found that she tended to annoy me a lot at times too. I just felt that she accepted things WAY to easily. I mean yeah, all these creepy supernatural things happen, so why not just continue on with things as though they never existed? Oh, and your mum tells you she’s a witch who was trapped into marrying your dad.....a man she wasn’t overly into, I might add, but became attracted to solely because he outwitted her and took away a large majority of her free will......that makes total sense......NOT! There were just some parts of this book that seemed out of place and unrealistic and I found that even though I liked the storyline, I couldn’t get over that fact.
One thing I did like about the story was Sophie’s friends at school and her whole school world in general. I’ve read countless books where the protagonist is an American high school student, that it was so incredibly refreshing to see an Australian one. Take it from an actual Australian high school student......that’s exactly how it is here. Well, without all the weirdness and supernatural la-la (if I may quote Niki) that is......
Towards the end of the story however I found that I did get really interested. I was saddened to see what happened to Niki, although it was good to see Sophie try to save her. God, who knew Sophie’s mum could be so cruel. I seriously don’t like her. My only issue with the ending is that I feel it was all very abrupt, like it was cut out in the middle of something, not really finished. I do plan to read the sequel, although I won’t be rushing out to get it.....

Very slow moving. Nonsensical regarding the amount of time it takes the daughter to ask the mother if she's a witch and the girls resistance to link magic with weird things happening. Frustrating.
Sophie has just moved to a new school and has the chance to reinvent herself. Somehow, she falls in with a popular clique of girls and it seems like all her high school dreams have come true. However, there are complications.
First: Her controlling mother is acting stranger than usual and Sophie is beginning to suspect there's secrets about her family that she doesn't know. When she learns about the magic that runs in her family Sophie must decide what to do with her new powers.
Second: Brody Maine. He's a bad boy who doesn't seem to do bad things but has a reputation for always being around when trouble is afoot. Sophie is drawn to him but he holds her at arms-length, believing he brings bad luck to those around him. When dangerous people come looking for Sophie, she must use her new powers to save those she cares about.
I really enjoyed this.
I love books about magic and witches and Burnt Snow did not disappoint. There are dangerous Witch Hunters, petty high school drama, centuries old witches and a magnetic outcast who can't seem to stay out of trouble!
Sophie is the new girl at school, with a strange and overbearing mother, trying to manage the bitchy popular group and a strange boy who catches her eye. As she reaches towards him, the strangest things begin to happen and Sophie starts to think that it’s not just Brody that is the danger.
As typical as this short summary sounds, the book is nothing what you expect. It is really well-written and a lot more twisted than I could ever explain without spoiling the book. It is quite a hefty read for a YA single volume, just about 700 pages. The plot flirts with danger for the most part before it reveals its secrets. I don’t mind that it took a long time for Sophie to discover more about the world, some books plots just have a switch flicked and suddenly the world changes, this gradual development is much deeper and more emotional for the reader.
Sophie is not the typical YA main character either. Her family is quite more complicated than it appears as well. While she does have her flaws and weakness, she is not a Mary-Sue whose only flaw is she cares too much. Badham has done a brilliant job in creating a character and a love that does not follow the typical simpering love story of most YA. We actually get to see the character grow, beyond just the plot and love interest but actually maturing in herself.
Badham also plays with her references, which I loved. At a costume party, most want to go as vampires with sparkles, to which there is the groaning and rolling of eyes. She doesn’t coddle her characters either, although I did feel a particular situation involving Sophie’s new friends acting out of sorts (for good reason) was dealt with a little too easy.
Again, as is the problem with a lot of good books, is the wait for the next book (although it does not say it anywhere on the cover, it is actually to be part of a trilogy). There’s no doubt in my mind that I will chase after White Rain as soon as it appears (although it says in the book and on multiple websites that it’s coming in 2011, I did manage to find a post on the Facebook as late as Sept 2012 that said it was coming soon). With some minor flaws, Burnt Snow is a strong book that stands out in a genre awash with simplistic plots and even simpler characters.
Ok I had mixed feeling about this book. I did I like? Yes and No. Why?At times it was fascinating and I couldn't wait to find out what was happening then I would be bored and couldn't wait for it to be finished (and not it the good way). It was too long and while there is an interesting story arc there was too much filler and things that didn't need to happen which detracted from my overall enjoyment. Also that damn ending really annoyed me given how much time I had invested in reading the story. I mean you expect the main story arc to lead up to a final battle and some resolution but instead after a massively long (and often unnecessary) series of events it ends abruptly in the middle of that battle with no resolution.
I love reading books set in Australia and I loved the Australian high school setting as it was a very realistic representation of the Australian high school experience (at least the way I remember it). I liked how the popular characters weren't portrayed as 'evil'. Yes they have flaws and are not necessarily that nice but they were more than that as you get to see from Sophie's individual interactions with many of them. I like Brody & Sophie together but there is not really enough time spent on there romance(particularly given the amount of time spent on everything else).
Burnt Snow is one of the best books I have ever read. Manly because its not like most the other teen reads where its the boy/girl tring to uncover what there, err should i say, crush/boy/girlfriend/love-of-their-lifes secret is. Althought they kind of both have a secrets anyway. But, yes, it was a great book.
Brody's character was outstanding and everything that Miss Badham discribed about this boy was WHAT I LOOK FOR IN A GUY!!! yes, i know, LAME... Even if I say so myself but is it really that stupid to love a book so much that you fall in love with a character - SHUT UP! I really dont like the NAME SOPHIE... but all well life goes on.
Beautiful work Van. Beautiful wrighting. Beautiful book.
Burnt Snow. Mysterious. Seductive. Twisted. Athough this books was mysterious in it's own way, I found myself thinking, "Thats obviously a trap, you are the dumbest person in the fictional world 19." I was sleepy by Part Two, because it became boring. There were parts of the story that didn't really need to be put into the book. I would have found it more exciting if the book spent more time explaing witchcraft rather than her going to school, Brody's not there, blah blah blah. Also, I felt like the Authour didn't really grasp what the characters looked like. I found myself getting mixed up between Kylie and Nikki. The main Character, Sophie aswell. I felt like her appearence was a blur in a world full of words.
I read this book sooooo long ago, but I still remember it being amazing, hence the 5 star rating.
I would class this as one of my favorites because it had a bit of everything. Sophie is an interesting character and I loved her development through the novel as she discovered who she was, and the power she had. Brody was also awesome. I know that whole mysterious bad boy thing in YA novels is played out and overdone, but I loved him. He was equally mysterious and funny. And the romance that developed was just amazing.
Now I must go and see if there was ever a second book made...
Loved it! This was a book that I couldn't guess what happened in it! This could be classed as a poor mans twilight with witches but it is so much more than that. It is is urban fantasy that meets home and away. The drama and the action are compelling til the end. However, this is supposed to be the first of a trilogy but I am yet to see the second instalment and it's killing me. Van if you read this, please publish the next book. I have to know what happens to Sophie and Brody.
I really liked this book because of the whole Brody thing. I liked him before i even started the book. I also think witches are really interesting and i havn't really read many books where they're the main thing. But seriously, Brody Meine is AWESOME! Didn't really like the ending but it was rally awesome and it kept me interested :D
Didn't enjoy this book very much. The story seemed to drag on for me and I kept wishing the author would just get to the point already. That and the whole teenager and mysterious bad boy thing is getting on my nerves. Not a fan.
Whatever you're doing, drop it. Pick up this book and read it now. This was amazing and will always be one of my favourites. Van Badham is an amazing author. It's a shame that the sequel never came out.
This book started out horribly, I was seriously considering to stop reading it. But the middle part got me quite excited. I wouldn't recommend this book, but not all of it was bad. Just one thing: the main character must be the worst best friend ever
I don't think I'll be finishing this. It's horribly predictable, I can picture exactly where it's heading, and frankly? I just have no interest to pick it up again after all these months.
brilliant! read the whole thing in less than 24 hours and couldn't put it down; I'm super excited for the sequel. great use of ambiguity to keep the set-up from feeling forced or overly expositional.
Mixed feelings. Some parts were absolutely amazing and left me wanting more whereas others were a bit slow with not much happening and could have been let out. I will read the sequel though.
