Ranma's latest nemesis is Herb of the legendary Musk Dynasty, a Chinese warrior tribe with the powers of animals. Herb, and his companions Lime and Mint, have come to Japan in search of a particular treasure - but they have to go through Ranma, Ryoga, and Mousse first!
Rumiko Takahashi (高橋留美子) was born in Niigata, Japan. She is not only one of the richest women in Japan but also one of the top paid manga artists. She is also the most successful female comic artist in history. She has been writing manga non-stop for 31 years.
Rumiko Takahashi is one of the wealthiest women in Japan. The manga she creates (and its anime adaptations) are very popular in the United States and Europe where they have been released as both manga and anime in English translation. Her works are relatively famous worldwide, and many of her series were some of the forerunners of early English language manga to be released in the nineties. Takahashi is also the best selling female comics artist in history; well over 100 million copies of her various works have been sold.
Though she was said to occasionally doodle in the margins of her papers while attending Niigata Chūō High School, Takahashi's interest in manga did not come until later. During her college years, she enrolled in Gekiga Sonjuku, a manga school founded by Kazuo Koike, mangaka of Crying Freeman and Lone Wolf and Cub. Under his guidance Rumiko Takahashi began to publish her first doujinshi creations in 1975, such as Bye-Bye Road and Star of Futile Dust. Kozue Koike often urged his students to create well-thought out, interesting characters, and this influence would greatly impact Rumiko Takahashi's works throughout her career.
Career and major works:
Takahashi's professional career began in 1978. Her first published story was Those Selfish Aliens, a comedic science fiction story. During the same year, she published Time Warp Trouble, Shake Your Buddha, and the Golden Gods of Poverty in Shōnen Sunday, which would remain the home to most of her major works for the next twenty years. Later that year, Rumiko attempted her first full-length series, Urusei Yatsura. Though it had a rocky start due to publishing difficulties, Urusei Yatsura would become one of the most beloved anime and manga comedies in Japan.
In 1980, Rumiko Takahashi found her niche and began to publish with regularity. At this time she started her second major series, Maison Ikkoku, in Big Comic Spirits. Written for an older audience, Maison Ikkoku is often considered to be one of the all-time best romance manga. Takahashi managed to work on Maison Ikkoku on and off simultaneously with Urusei Yatsura. She concluded both series in 1987, with Urusei Yatsura ending at 34 volumes, and Maison Ikkoku being 15.
During the 1980s, Takahashi became a prolific writer of short story manga, which is surprising considering the massive lengths of most of her works. Her stories The Laughing Target, Maris the Chojo, and Fire Tripper all were adapted into original video animations (OVAs). In 1984, after the end of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, Takahashi took a different approach to storytelling and began the dark, macabre Mermaid Saga. This series of short segments was published sporadically until 1994, with the final story being Mermaid's Mask. Many fans contend that this work remains unfinished by Takahashi, since the final story does not end on a conclusive note.
Another short work left untouched is One-Pound Gospel, which, like Mermaid Saga, was published erratically. The last story to be drawn was published in 2001, however just recently she wrote one final chapter concluding the series
Later in 1987, Takahashi began her third major series, Ranma ½. Following the late 80s and early 90s trend of shōnen martial arts manga, Ranma ½ features a gender-bending twist. The series continued for nearly a decade until 1996, when it ended at 38 volumes. Ranma ½ is one of Rumiko Takahashi's most popular series with the Western world.
During the later half of the 1990s, Rumiko Takahashi continued with short stories and her installments of Mermaid Saga and One-Pound Gospel until beginning her fourth major work, InuYasha. While Ran

Part 11: Rise Up, Ranma!: Ryoga and Mousse get changed, but Ranma is still being beaten by Herb.
Objective vs Subjective Rating: 3 stars vs. 4 stars Reason: The Nodoka story is one of the few Ranma stories that's both emotionally nuanced AND hilarious, and it's one of the few instances where a status quo ending made me cackle like a madwoman. By itself, it would definitely be objectively four stars on both levels. However, it is sandwiched between less stellar, more wtf-y plots so~
General Disclaimer: Because of reasons, what I'm actually reading are the English translations of the Japanese volumes which are arranged differently from the US versions. So the stories I'm reviewing will not match up with the stories in the description. Plus; there are going to be spoilers because there isn't enough content in these books for me to discuss them while avoiding the things.
When I decided I was going to reread all 38 volumes of Ranma, there was a little part of me that groaned "ugh, even the Musk Dynasty arc." Well, now that I've read it, I need to thwap that little part of my head because this arc was FANTASTIC.
The plot is pretty simply, and begins with Cologne telling Shampoo that they're closing the shop early because they have important guests coming. Shampoo is excited, because it means she can go date Ranma instead of working; Mousse tries to stop her, but then they're accosted by a strange fellow in wolfish clothing who says he's never met a woman before and he wants to date Shampoo. This leads to a fight with Mousse, and the guy is crazy-fast. Meanwhile, Ryoga is planning to intercept Akane on her way home from school to confess his feelings. But when she gets there, a fellow in tiger-striped clothes appears and says it's the first time he's seen a woman; her goes to touch her, and Ryoga attacks him. Ryoga is clobbered, and Ranma finds him alone imbedded in the street. Ryoga tells him what happened, and then they round the corner and find Mousse pinned to a wall. Mousse says that Shampoo left with the fellow to go back to the cafe, so the three guys head that way.
In the cafe, Cologne is finishing up business with a fellow, revealing where a particular treasure is. Tiger-boy and Wolf-boy appear with Shampoo and Akane (who's slung over tiger-boy's shoulder). The leader says that their quest must not be delayed, and nonsense like this should be thrown away. They grab Akane and pitch her into the arms of Ranma, who's just shown up. The three are about to leave and Ranma says "Hold it," and says that while Akane is homely, stubborn, and a pain in the rear, there are some things that nobody should be able to do, even to Akane (really nice, jerk) - and a fight with the ringleader ensues. Cologne tries to warn him, but Ranma doesn't listed and he gets his ass kicked. Not only is his ass kicked by Master Herb, the ringleader, but it's revealed that Herb is a girl, and when she does a water attack against Ranma, she changes him and notes the curse. She asks her companions, Mint and Lime, to bring the Pail of Preservation, and dumps water from it on Ranma and leaves, stating "be thankful your life isn't over."
Cologne explains that these three are members of the legendary Musk Dynasty, a group of warriors who harnessed the power and strength of animals by turning various animals into girls at Jusenkyo and marrying them. Herb is the descendent of the dragon, while Lime and Mint are from tiger and wolf. They're ferocious fighters. Ranma doesn't care - he's miffed that he was trashed so completely and says it's never happening again. Later that night Ranma's in the bathtub and doesn't change back into a guy - it turns out the Pail of Preservation locks you into your form. This is what the Musk Dynasty used to keep their animals-turned-girls locked into their human states.
Cologne tells Ranma that Master Herb is looking for the Pot of Liberation, which will undo the Pail of Preservation's ability - but he'll have to fight Herb again in order to take it. Ranma doesn't care, he's going to do it. Ryoga and Mousse promise to go with him, but admit to themselves that they just want to use the Pail of Preservation to lock themselves into human form. Akane apologizes to Ranma, feeling like it's her fault that he's in this situation. When Ranma asks if she thinks he'll lose, she honestly tells him that she knows he won't.
The three travel and eventually catch up with Herb, Mint, and Lime at a hot springs, and the reader gets to see that Mint and Lime are completely obsessed with Herb now that they know she has a girl form. They just want to see her breasts. Ranma and Herb fight and Ranma loses again before Herb takes off.
They race to the location of the treasure, and Mousse and Ryoga get into battle with Mint and Lime. Ryoga is very nearly killed, being choked to death, and the only thing that saves him is the absolute depression of dying like this, leaving Akane for Ranma to end up with, and he lets out a massive Shishi Hokodan blast. In doing so, Ryoga and Mousse obtain the Pail of Preservation, but when they use it they forget that it has cold water, and they're locked into their pig and duck forms, respectively. Ranma finds them (trying to stop them, but is too late) and he takes the Pail. Placing the dipper on top of the pail, it begins spinning and points to the location of the Pot of Liberation. Unfortunately, Master Herb bursts in and sees it, too, so now they all know where it is. Herb gets there first, breaking the boulders that encapsulate it, so that when the water comes pouring down the mountainside, he is transformed back to his normal state. He and Ranma fight, and now Ranma can see how Herb manipulated his ki in order to defeat him (bouncing it off the ground to rebound and hit Ranma). Ranma flashes him to make him angry, and uses the distraction to tell Mousse and Ryoga to move ahead and find the Pot of Liberation and save themselves. Herb tells Ranma the story of his curse, noting that he was transforming a monkey into a girl, and she knocked him into the pool and splashed him with water from the Pail of Preservation, and seeing Ranma (who looks like the monkey) and his breasts (which remind him of the curse) just make him angry and more determined to win.
Ranma continues fighting (as Mousse and Ryoga fight Mint and Lime to get to the Pot of Liberation) and Ranma pulls off a Shiryu Hoten Ha to create at tornado. The only problem is that Herb comes back to the ground, rather than in the twister. He points out that he's the lord of dragons and master of the use of ki, so he recognized it and countered with his own cold ki. On the bright side, the twister helped Mousse and Ryoga, as the Pot of Liberation fell into a river and made it boiling hot, and turned them back.
Ranma, meanwhile, is lying on the ground thinking he's lost everything. He sees Akane in his mind, crying, and decides that even if he can't be a man again, he still has to back for her sake. He stands up, determined to come up with some way to defeat Herb, and at that moment Ryoga and Mousse appear with the Pot of Liberation. (to be continued)
Ugh, why did I not enjoy this? I feel like this is one of the arcs that matches the tone of the end of the series, when Shit Gets Serious. I think I wasn't terribly keen on the arcs where Ranma is trapped as a girl, other than the Ultimate Weakness Moxibustion (because learning the Shiryu Hoten Ha was hello-cool, let's be real). But I never liked the Musk Dynasty characters much, and now I actually really enjoyed them. I dunno, maybe it's something I needed to sit on for twenty years. But man it was awkward, accepting that young!me was just stupid and this is a really good arc.

Again, while the stories are ridiculous and weird, add creepy and disgusiting to this one in particular.
We have hereone of the most interesting oponents Ranma has faced. Herb, from the Musk clan. A group of people with animal traits, why they have the traits is really gross, but quite imaginative since it's due to the magic of Jyusenkyio. Funny how that place is so popular yet nobody knows about it.
Here we have an oponent that is not only strong, but smart enough to keep Ranma in his female form, preventing him from doing real damage. Ranma must find a way to reverse his curse and both Ryoga and Mousse tag along, for their own reasons.
I really like how Rumiko didn't forget about the special techniques she's given to the characters till now, even Ranma's most broken technique up until this moment.
Though I enjoyed the 1st part of the story about a cheerleader (Volume 21), the 2nd half bored me.
I cried a bit when Ranma showed up to rescue his mom.
I was giggling when Akane said she loves Ranma... because of the jewel.
So Ranma likes to be chased and have women around him. He doesn't like any of them, but with his good-looks and charm, he knows he can capture a woman's attention. Hmmmm.......
This was kind of on the better side until Happosai appeared at the end and was a gross old creep. Just put Happosai away, bury him alive or something. We get to meet Ranma's mom in this one who is just a weird as every other character in this series. The whole plot line with the hate/love jewelry was kind of funny.
Happosai continues to be the worst character and I kind of wish he‘d stop coming up, where‘s Dr. Tofu, hm?????? The rest of the stories very really good tho!
Woot!! An entire storyline for the entire volume! These are the volumes I love best. And the best part of this volume? Almost NO Akane whatsoever!!! And lots of Ryoga!! Huzzah!!! Plus, also lots of Ranma as a girl, and I think she's so stinkin' cute I just squee a bit each time XD
The storyline was a bit intense but of course it was not void of any of the Ranma silliness that makes this series so much fun to read. Ranma (as a girl), Ryoga, and Mousse are off to find the Pail of Preservation and the Water Pot of Liberation while our buddies from the Musk Dynasty are doing the same. Of course, battles and hilarity ensue with, of course, a cliff hanger ending.
All together I enjoyed this volume and am excited to see how it concludes!
They say you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. But I did - And I was right ;) This series is amazing! You get genderbender, fantasy, action, romance and slapstick-humor along with intense serious moments, what more can you want?
Yay for new stories! but as for this version, the art is fuzzy and I'm just glad they're currently coming out with an unflopped version with cleaner art. this is the small blue "action" version they switched to on this volume.
