Part of the Smithsonian Backyard series, this book is a beautiful nonfiction storybook about a mother cottontail rabbit caring for herself and her young babies. Beautiful text rich with detail matches well with the lifelike illustrations. Captivating for children and adults alike. In general the books in this series are not shy about the realities of life for a wild animal, so if you have a child who might be sensitive to that information, be prepared to talk about it. I personally think it’s better to use these types of moments for teaching about nature, but some might want to avoid those conversations with very young children, one who just lost a pet, etc.

This is part of the Smithsonian's Backyard series for picture books.

All of which are great choices for school readers. Although, nothing happends to Cottontail the cycle of life is covered briefly. So, I would probably not suggest this for most young children.

Although the series is created in a picture book format they have a glossary and points of Interest (index) included. They would be an excellent choice to pair with non-fiction books to support the core curriculum standards.
