A Time for Dragons collects seventeen stories and an essay that breathe new life to these majestic creatures of the imagination. Between these covers you will find tales of action, adventure, horror, fantasy, humor and mystery, refreshingly written with voices that are unmistakably Filipino, and all of them invariably filled with a sense of wonder.
I have always revered dragons (don't we all?); thus, it ultimately gave me the greatest satisfaction when I finally obtained a copy of this book.
However, upon reading and savoring the tales here, I find myself not only reliving all over again the sense of wonder that the thought of dragons have always given me, but also being reminded of the great Filipino tales that have be passed on through generations (but have sadly been brushed aside due to modernity and, well, colonial mentality).
The art in this book (from the cover to the small illustrations that came with each story) is lovely. I liked it :) The stories themselves were powerful, mysterious and amazing. They sought to show a different side of the dragons, from the emotional, physical and mental, to the metaphysical, antagonistic and benign. This volume is truly a masterpiece; I'd think the dragons themselves would approve.
Oh, and before I forget: the essay that came with this volume was timely, informative and interesting. Do read it if you can.
A beautiful read on one of the most wondrous of creatures.
(Of course, I can't help but have a favorite; Tholomew's tale here truly struck me as unique and refreshing--- although, honestly, each and every story here was striking in its own way.)
