A stunning compilation by Dana Gluckstein. I particularly enjoyed Archbishop Desmond Tutu's moving foreward, especially his explanation of the practice of Ubuntu. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, found at the end of the book is a wonderful addition to this fascinating book and thought-provoking book.

The Artist and Model in Mutual Respect

Dana Gluckstein has offered the world - and the reader/viewer particularly - a deeply moving experience in her collection of brilliant photographs titled DIGNITY. Gluckstein is aware of the fact that as the planet grows smaller and communication invades every corner of our lives that certain indigenous peoples, those purest beings of the human race untainted by 'civilization' as we perceive it, will gradually miscegenate and the world will be a lesser place for the loss of their particular character.

Gluckstein has traveled around the globe for the past thirty years visiting countries and peoples on the periphery of the world's focus and there she has photographed the various indigenous people in the most sensitive manner. Each of her subjects returns her look through the lens demonstrating a trust that can only come form the gentility of the artist. The portraits are individuals and groups in native attire, some with spectacular garments and headdresses, some with simple up-close full frontal face shots, but each of the subjects of these ninety photographs shows great dignity. The sense of personal pride, genuine spirit, and compelling trust makes these photographs some of the most sculptural works a camera can capture.

This book (and others in the series) is presented in conjunction with Amnesty International and the presence of this book is particularly meaningful as this is the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International. In addition to the photographs there are contributions in writing form Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Faithkeeper Oren R. Lyons, Dana Gluckstein herself and an epilogue by Amnesty International. This volume is a treasure that hopefully will last as a reminder of the purity of history of man in his first habitat. It is an amazing collection of the profound honesty of peoples whom we rarely see.
