My dad and I used to fish in the Mississippi Delta when I was a boy. I remember the images from that time: cotton fields, black folks, corks bobbing on dark water, boat landings, bait shops, cottonmouth water moccasins, country stores, and the unrelenting flatness of the land. There is no smell like the potent, overpowering smell of Delta gumbo clay. When God made the world, he must have used Delta clay.
