A bride. A groom. A deadly curse. Forced to attend her brother’s wedding, Saige Wolvercraft returns to her ancestral home, the house where her mother took her own life. Wolvercraft Manor is haunted. Or at least it is for Saige. The rest of her family thinks she’s nuts—a diagnosed handful. Worse, her ex-boyfriend and successful rock star, Jasper Young, is attending the wedding, and he’s the only one who believes her. When Saige learns that a string of family deaths has occurred in the house over the last two centuries, she realises the supernatural is involved with the manor’s dark history. Not only does her bedroom window opens mysteriously on its own, but cries echo from the attic, and a seance goes disastrously wrong. After a storm moves in, cutting off the family’s contact with the outside world, the bride starts behaving strangely. It’s time for Saige to investigate. The problem is she needs Jasper’s help. As Saige and Jasper are drawn closer together and uncover more of the house’s secrets, they learn that something evil walks Wolvercraft’s halls… and it’s coming for all of them.

“In life I was afraid. In death I am fearless. They will all pay.”
Twisted, moody, adventurous. Grotesque beauty permeates this action-packed Gothic novel. A family cursed to misery. Star-crossed lovers. A superyacht. Wolvercraft Manor is the quintessential haunted house story but with a celebrity excess lifestyle update.
There are so many plot twists in this book that it is challenging to talk about it in-depth without spoilers. As this book has not yet been released (get it May 27, 2023!), I have decided to make this a spoiler-free review.
Throughout her entire life, Saige Wolvercraft has felt haunted. The daughter of an extraordinarily wealthy British media mogul, Saige should be going to parties and living the A-list socialite life. Instead, miserable and isolated Saige has eschewed her family fortune and struggles to make ends meet writing for a local London magazine. Saige, understandably, has never fully recovered after witnessing her mother’s death in childhood. Furthermore, since the event, her family has treated Saige as mentally unstable, even hospitalizing her for hallucinations. And it is true that Saige sees things that others don’t—ghosts.
Now, Saige is forced to return to the historic family home, Wolvercraft Manor, for her brother Xavier’s wedding. Situated on a small island off the coast of Normandy, Wolvercraft Manor is not only the site of her mother’s death, it is where the ghosts that plagued Saige’s childhood reside. But Saige will do anything for her brother, so she puts her misgivings aside and joins the boisterous wedding party for what promises to be the celebrity event of the year. For Xavier, Saige is even willing to put up with patronizing, ignorant relatives, Xav’s scornful supermodel fiancée and her catty bridesmaids, not to mention Jasper Young, the rockstar ex who jilted Saige.
As they approach the island, a sense of foreboding warns Saige away from the manor. Saige tries to escape, but it’s no use—every hotel is booked for the wedding and a massive storm is brewing off the coast. Everyone is trapped on the island, and Saige has no choice but to stay at the manor. Just as she feared, progressively more off-putting things begin happening around the house, until one particularly frightening incident brings Saige and Jasper together. Learning that Wolvercraft Manor may be cursed, the two formerly betrothed join forces to uncover the curse’s origin. All the while, danger closes in around the wedding festivities as the stakes get higher and higher…
Where this book excelled:
Imagery: Crowe’s descriptions are truly this novel’s crown jewel. Eerie beauty contrasts with sickening imagery, modern excess with folkloric elements. This novel is beautifully set. It is such a sensory book; it would probably make an excellent movie with the audio and visual effects further amplified on screen.
Action: Fast-paced, captivating plot. The action is non-stop and the mystery intriguing. Readers will be just as desperate as the characters to unearth Wolvercraft Manor’s wicked secrets.
Tension: External factors and heightened emotions amplify fear. You know how in The Blair Witch Project they run out of cigarettes, so now they’re lost in the woods, the weather is terrible, they’re being hunted, AND they’re all going through nicotine withdrawal? Same type of thing here—family event stress, ex-fiancé stress, being in the (haunted) house where your mom died, raging storm causing power outages, all the while encountering supernatural things that would be genuinely terrifying to experience.
Vibes: Creepy, moody. Immersive in a way unique to horror and fairy tales. There’s something almost perversely cozy, reading about Saige and Jasper running through the woods in a raging storm.
Where this book struggled:
Cultural Stereotypes and Misrepresentations: Unfortunately, xenophobia is a common pillar in the horror genre because what do people fear but the unfamiliar, the misunderstood? This novel is no exception. I won’t describe the issues in detail because there is no way to talk about them without spoiling the plot. Briefly, the book plays into stereotypes/misrepresentations of Romani culture and witches. In my opinion, these details were completely unnecessary and ultimately irrelevant to the plot. I strongly disliked that the author made this part of the book and I think this choice might make the novel a do-not-read for many people. I hope that the author takes the opportunity to educate herself about why these stereotypes are harmful and avoids them in future books.
Conclusion: 3.5 Stars
This was a very difficult book to rate. While reading, I wavered between 2-4 stars. Ultimately, the book’s final climax pushed it over to 4 stars. I think a fair rating would be 3.5.
Overall, this was captivating gothic novel, dramatic and filled with haunting imagery. A little rough in places, but absorbing and entertaining. I enjoyed this book and would be interested in reading more by this author.
Scariness: Not scary. The characters experience and see very frightening things, and there is a lot of creepy imagery, but I think most people could read this book alone at night.
Romance Level: For me, peak romance is risking your life and undergoing a seemingly insurmountable trial to save your beloved. Therefore, I would consider this book highly romantic. It is not a steamy book, however.
Worth Buying/Rereading? I could see myself buying/rereading. Would I buy a copy for my horror afficionado brother? Probably not.
Star Criteria 1: Is the book engaging/enjoyable/entertaining? Yes. 2: Is the book creative? Yes. 3: Does the book offer educational value? Somewhat, yes. There are regional historical details, folkloric elements. I learned about witches’ plinths. But I also would not take any facts in this book at face value. 4. Does the book highlight underrepresented voices? No. And, again, there were issues with cultural stereotypes and misrepresentation. 5. Does the book challenge existing literary norms and tropes? Yes, I’m counting the last third of the book.
Massive thank you to NetGalley, Tangled Tree Publishing, and Cas E. Crowe for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I'm a huge fan of horror and the paranormal. So when I saw the high rating and the description, I knew I had to request this. Unfortunately, the story wasn't as immersive or horror-filled as I would have liked. Nothing about the story stood out. I ended up skimming through most of the novel.
Overall, not for me.
***Thank you to NetGalley, Cas E. Crowe, and Tangled Tree Publishing for graciously sending me the ARC to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***
Saige has been gone from her childhood home on an island for years, but her brother wants to get married there. The last time Saige was there, she saw her mother kill herself. Saige also “sees” things (i.e. ghosts) and because of this her father had her institutionalized. What the rest of her family doesn’t realize is that Saige really is seeing these things. It’s not all in her head. She is very anxious about returning.
Once there, she finds that her brother’s best friend from when they were younger, Jasper, is also there. He is a musician and will play at the wedding. What the rest of the family doesn’t know is that Saige and Jasper were not only in a relationship, they were engaged until Jasper just up and left without a word.
When Saige starts seeing ghosts again, it seems that Jasper is able to see them, as well, so the two embark on trying to figure out why all the ghosts are there and how to stop them from what appears to be a curse on the house and anyone who marries into the family.
While I feel like I gave a lot away, I don’t really think it’s too much, as so much more goes on in the story. The atmosphere of the book is very very creepy and very well done. The haunted old mansion. A storm that has them trapped. The ghosts are very scary and quite well-described so this book may not be for the squeamish. It was fast-paced. I also really liked the relationship between Saige and Jasper, though (not surprisingly) Saige had a hard time with Jasper, him having abandoned her way back when.
Walvercraft Manor is told with a mix of fairytale horror and thriller and it’s done with perfect precision. When Sage is invited to her brothers wedding that he’s having at their ancestral home Wolverrcraft Manor she is reluctant to go. The place where she had an idyllic childhood until she watched her mom jump off the cliff. Since then her life has been a nightmare. Her father got her psychiatric help but unfortunately that is not the help Sage needed it also didn’t help when she had a secret relationship with Jasper her brothers childhood friend and a famous rockstar but the night they planned to tell her family about it he went MIA and ended the relationship ended only cost Sagemore issues with her family thinking she made up a fake boyfriend. As soon as she makes it back to the island the vision start immediately that isn’t the only thing that plagues her upon her arrival because Jasper has come to be the musician Xav’s wedding and as soon as he sees her he rarely lets her out of his site. Sage doesn’t understand why Jasper wants to be her constant companion and she wants to ask him about why he ghosted her the night they were going to tell her family about their engagement but on the first night when they both experience the ghost bride Jasper is understandably freaked out but more than that he now believes her and wants to help find out what is going on and her aunt Prue’s Plus one is a historian the tell Sage she can help her find out the answers and it all has something to do with a curse but when the historian Harriet goes missing Sage knows it is left her to fix what is wrong with the Home she wants love so much what is her mom crazy and if so is she crazy as well? I loved this book I want to say this was the perfect horror book and I think it is the most of all it is original and unlike any horror book I have read before because I loved it I loved the relationship with Sage in Jasper they had wonderful characters in the book those you love to hate and love to love and I loved the ending just a little spoiler the ending is a happy one but not until after all the nightmarish ghost and goblins have their say. What a great freaking book! A definite five star book and one I highly recommend. If you love horror with a little bit of fairytale mixed in then you’ll Love Wolvercraft Manor, I certainly did! I received this book from NetGalley and Tangletree publishing but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
This book is a page-turner, that's undeniable. It definitely kept me hooked. However, I think it's important that readers start this history with the appropriate expectations: this a romance novel with a supernatural/gothic setting. There are a bunch of creepy scenes, ghosts, curses and scary moments, but this is mainly a love story set in a haunted house.
The overall impression that the reader has is that this is going to have a happy ending - which for me is one of the main characteristics of romance novels. Another one is strong feelings and sudden realizations/changes of mind (sometimes with little development)
Regarding the romance: the clichés would be second-chance + forced proximity + lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers. Those were well developed, I think. Romance is not one of my most common genres, but I think fans of those clichés will definitely love this book.
There were other clichés regarding the family and friends that I didn't enjoy, mainly, the "not like other girls" one and the "evil and shallow beautiful woman". Honestly, Zoe didn't need to be such a b*tch for the story to work. In general, I wish characters had been less black-and-white, with more nuances to their behaviour. At the beginning, the story looked more adult/mature, but then it becomes more new/young adult, with a lot of insights on the main character's overthinking. Also, she was SO many unjustified knowledge; sentences like "she could feel that it was true" were too frequent. It would have been more believable for me if those statements -and other explanations- weren't there. It's okay to build doubt.
That takes us to the horror story: it had some twists that I didn't expect, although I'm not a frequent reader of horror stories; probably more experienced readers would have guessed them. My impression is that many of this twists were mainly included for some shock factor, but honestly, I don't mind. They do make the reading experience agile and entertaining.
So yeah, in summary: not a complex book and it will probably disappoint readers that look strictly for horror. BUT for the rest of us, specially those who like romance, this will be an enjoyable read, perfect for spooky season o a weekend trip.
Thanks to NetGalley and Tangled Tree Publishing for the eARC!
Saige never wanted to return to her family’s estate, Wolvercraft Manor, but when her brother decides he wants to get married at the historic mansion, she’s summoned for the ceremony, despite her past traumas at the home. Worse yet, her ex-boyfriend is also at the wedding, just as her strange visions and vivid connections to beings on the other side begin again. It turns out there’s a deadly presence at Wolvercraft Manor, waiting for new blood to feast on. As the wedding draws closer, things get more intense and a storm bears down on the manor. It’s a race against time for Saige and Jasper to figure out how to solve the curse before it can claim new victims.
This was a great, atmospheric ghost story, with enough of an interesting background, in both the past and present, that it kept my attention throughout the book. The legend itself was great, and Saige’s experiences were scary and intense as she tried to make sense of what was happening. It was really thrilling to try to unravel everything as the book went on and things became more intense. And they really did become intense at points; the author doesn’t shy away on the gore.
And the ending was a perfect culmination of everything that had happened up to that point. I enjoyed it very much.
The romance was also really fun, it didn’t detract from the spooky atmosphere and didn’t feel contrived at all. I was rooting for Saige to figure things out, and was happy to see her happy in the end.
Overall, this was a really good take on a ghost story. Creepy and spooky on one hand, with a nice subplot and really the perfect ending to go along with what had happened in the book. I’d recommend picking this one up.
Thank you to NetGalley, Cas E. Crowe, and Tangled Tree Publishing for sharing the ARC to review. My opinion on the book is personal and may not align with others.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Wolvercraft Manor," a captivating horror novel. It delves into the eerie combination of a tempestuous storm, a haunted house, and a dysfunctional family, making it a perfect choice for those who love such elements. The narrative revolves around a wealthy family reuniting at their ancestral house for a wedding, only to find themselves isolated due to an impending storm. As they confront the challenges of weather, they gradually unravel the unsettling truth that their ancestral home is also haunted. The story skillfully weaves together a compelling blend of historical context and haunting occurrences, which I found engrossing.
However, one aspect that hindered my complete immersion was the difficulty I faced in truly connecting with any of the characters, particularly our protagonist, Saige. Even the love story between Saige and Jasper felt superficial, resulting in their relationship feeling more akin to that of siblings rather than romantic partners. **(SPOILER) I wish there was more attention given to the love stories in the book, between Jasper and Saige, between Anna and Frederick.**
Despite this drawback, the novel's well-crafted storyline and haunting history kept me engaged throughout.
What works - - The story, setting of the house, the storm, the mystery behind the haunting.
I liked the overall story and the mystery, but the romance was meh. I think I would’ve preferred more focus on the horror side of things.
Lies, curses, and mystery plague the Wolvercraft family. As they gather for a wedding, Saige begins to see the ghosts that have had her committed in the past…
I felt bad for Saige, and wasn’t a huge fan of the rest of the characters. I’ll definitely read more books by this author though, as there were a lot of elements I liked in this story as well.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Tangled Tree Publishing for a copy.
When Saige Wolvercraft returns to her family’s ancestral home for her brother’s wedding, she would rather be anywhere else. As a young child, she saw her mother plunge off the cliff to her death. Those images and so many others about the house have haunted her all her life. But she has no choice, she has been summoned and must come. And as if things couldn’t get worst, her ex-fiancé is in attendance, a man who left her before she would reveal his identity to her family, giving them further proof of her instability. But Saige discovers the legend of a curse placed on the house and its descendants. A curse that leads to the death of anyone who marries for love. Saige can’t let her brother’s marriage take place. But how can she explain things without seeming even crazier than they already think she is? With a storm brewing both inside and outside the house, Saige finds her only ally is Jasper, the man she doesn’t trust. Shivery, spooky, and totally Gothic, I loved this story. I didn’t want to put it down. I enjoyed the characters and the description of the house and surrounding area. The author drew me into the story. I didn’t want to stop reading.
This book is definitely one of my top reads of the year so far. I absolutely loved it. Engaging plot, beautiful setting, and characters you can really be invested in.
A beautiful modern gothic horror story written in beautiful haunting prose. Wolvercraft Manor is a story about love and what losing love can drive you to do. Saige, has come to the family home for her brother’s wedding. She didn’t want to set foot on the island after witnessing her mothers death when she a child. Her family believes she has a mental illness due to seeing things they don’t see. The only one who believes in her is her ex Jasper. Together can they solve the mystery of Wolvercraft Manor?
I really enjoyed this book. It didn’t contain any graphic violence and no sex scenes that are usually included in horror novels. This book was a fun read. It’s haunting but no too scary. Perfect book for those who enjoy gothic novels.
Wolvercraft Manor: Saige Wolvercraft is returning to her ancestral home on a small island in the English Channel, fully against her will. She has a strained relationship with her family, who all think she is crazy, but she still came for her brother’s wedding. Oh, and her ex who ghosted her five years ago is here too. Lovely. She starts experiencing some supernatural happenings before she even gets to the island, and it only gets worse when she gets to the house. Is Saige really crazy, like everyone thought her mother was, or is there something wrong with Wolvercraft Manor?
I love a gothic haunted house story and this did not disappoint. Wolvercraft Manor is spooky, funny, and there is even some romance. The ghost story is really well done and I was sufficiently creeped out while I was staying up way too late, trying to solve the mystery. I really liked Saige. She is smart and funny and brave and I just wanted her family to LISTEN. Jeez her family was infuriating. Like, they just thought all the mysterious deaths in the family were a coincidence??? Anyway. Her ex, Jasper, was a good mystery solving partner who obviously cared about Saige but was also young and dumb and figuring out how to be a romantic partner.
This was great spooky book that had everything I was in a gothic horror novel, like seances, generational trauma, and inclement weather. Perfect for reading during a thunderstorm.
Thanks to LibraryThing and Tangled Tree Publishing for the ARC!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book was surprisingly good! It was really entertaining but a tad bit descriptive with gory details. The story line was original and it had horror with some romance and humor thrown in. The characters were somewhat lackluster to me, especially Jasper. I appreciate his loyalty but we don’t really get a good explanation to why he did what he did and more importantly, what made him change his mind about Saige and come back. He could have made a lot of things easier for Saige and her family but didn’t bother. Even though he was weak wet blanket, he did have some nice humorous moments. Saige was a strong character considering what she was going through. Her inner thoughts aligned with what mine might be in a stressful situation. Not a hero all the time but more rational and resigned. Don’t get me started on her family and Zoe. They were terrible. So it sounds like there were a lot of things that bothered me, but I was still really entertained and was surprised by the little twist at the end. Overall a really fun, scary and exciting read! I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tangled Tree Publishing for the digital advanced reader's copy.
This was not what I was expecting. The publisher placed it in the horror category, but, it's really not horror despite its supernatural elements. This is a romantic suspense novel with angry ghosts - think old school Victoria Holt or Phyllis Whitney.
If that's your cup of tea, this may be right up your alley.
Saige Wolvercraft is dreading returning to Wolvercraft Manor for her brother's wedding. Things become worse when she realizes her ex-fiance is there. Things become worser when she begins seeing ghosts who seemingly want to kill her. Things become worsest when she discovers her entire family is cursed and guests begin dying.
Saige has to stop the curse, but how?
This story just never felt like more than a B-movie for me. The plot doesn't entirely make sense, the characters aren't particularly compelling, and even the romance isn't terribly romantic.
However, it is a fast read, and for me, it had the nostalgia factor of reminding me of the gothic romances I enjoyed in middle school.
Received an ARC of Wolvercraft Manor by Cas E. Crowe (via LibraryThing). Posting this as a placeholder for now - review to come once I've read it - but wanted to share the cover since the Goodreads listing is missing it.
“In life I was afraid. In death I am fearless. They will all pay.”
Some may say that this is a romance book disguised as horror, but I beg to differ. As a lover of gothic atmosphere, old sprawling manors, foggy and forgotten graveyards, and vengeful spirits, I’d say this book is horror with a little bit of romance.
What? An old manor on an island that has seen brides jumping to their death from towers and cliffs? Say no more and take all my money! This book got me hooked from the first page until the last and I am glad that I requested and was given an ARC by @netgalley and @hottreepublishing. I’ll admit that I wasn’t scared out of my wits, but I found the book entertaining, something that I wanted to see through to the end. The protagonist is thought to have mental issues and was even hospitalized previously and is taking maintenance medications. What she didn’t tell everyone was that she sees ghosts. Add to that her fiancé’s abandonment and we can all understand why she spiraled into a deep depression.
Asked to come back to the family’s ancestral home, Wolvercraft Manor, for the wedding of his brother, Xav, to a supermodel, Zoe, it’s the last place Saige wants to be. But she has no choice, or else risks being further shunned and treated as an outcast by the entire family.
As you go deeper into the book, you’ll realize that not everything you see is what it’s supposed to be. The manor hides many secrets that Saige will soon discover with Jasper's help.
Saige, as much as she doesn’t want to admit it, has to accept that she is still in love with her ex-fiancé, Jasper. I find it endearing that he has come back to the island in the pretense of performing for Saige’s brother’s wedding to reconnect with her and perhaps rekindle their romance. Saige sacrifices her life to put an end to the curse and to save Jasper’s life and the life of her brother’s bride.
If you’re looking for a serious read, this is not the book. This is a short and exciting story ideal for those who want a quick and fun read with a few scares and laughs.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tangled Tree Publishing as well as the author for this ARC. #NetGalley #TangledTreePublishing #CasECrowe Content Warning; Graphic Violence, Suicide, Ableism, Xenophobia, PTSD, Mental Illness, Release Date: May 27, 2023 Saige Wolvercraft is unstable and unhappy. She is determined to never return to her childhood home, the creepy Wolvercraft Manor. The imposing and haunted mansion where she witnessed her mother take her own life. Now she’s struggling to function after a breakdown brought on by trauma. Her family thinks she’s crazy so when her brother invites her to his wedding at the family manor, she’s reluctant to go. To make matters worse, her brother invites her ex, Jasper Young. As the events unfold in the house, Saige begins to suspect supernatural involvement. No one believes her, except Jasper, of course. As such he’s the only one who can or will help her. Wolvercraft Manor just may show Saige and Jasper its secrets. They may not want them now.both This book hooked me right from the start. I found Saige to be a sympathetic character that I couldn’t help but want the best for. She is unhappy and struggling as well as completely alone. Her ex-fiance,Jasper, has destroyed her credibility within her own family by standing her up at the family dinner in which he was to meet the rest of the Wolvercraft family. The characters are the best part of this book. The relationship between Saige and Jasper was the true focus of the story, not really the horror but, having said that, the author has created a delightfully atmospheric spooky house full of scary ghosts. I loved a lot about this book. I would have spent less time on the romance and more on the horror. I think that there are a lot of people who would love that aspect of it. The romance doesn’t take away from the story much, but I wanted more of it. Overall, this book was a treat that I would recommend to both ghost story lovers as well as romance fans.
Saige Wolvercraft has returned to the family manor for the wedding of her brother. Paige has a chequered background of mental health breaks, thus her family treats her with kid gloves. Right away she sees the manor ghost who she thinks is going to kill her brother's fiance, Zoe. This is just the beginning of her ghostly encounters, the reason her family has had her committed in the past.
This was ok for me. I liked the ghost, horror, and gothic vibes but the romance annoyed me. It is an enemies-to-lovers trope and all the miscommunications and things left unsaid just plain bothered me. The spooky manor and finding out about the ghosts' identities in life along with the cause of their deaths was a lot of fun. The writing is simple but suits the story. An engrossing read and I'd read the author again.
Where do I start? Wolvercraft Manor is an absolutely fabulously written story. Right from the start, I felt as though I was feeling all of Saige's feelings, both the good and the bad. Cas E Crowe has executed the storyline perfectly. There's a little something in there for everyone. The Gothic horror (which absolutely woke me up in sweats and a rapid heartbeat dreaming I was Saige), the anguish of the past both for family who didn't understand her, and her failed relationship, and the anticipation and stress for the present - I'm a romance lover and I was hooked into wanting her and Jasper figure their issues out!
I literally read this story from the moment I got it, and couldn't put it down till 2am as I just HAD to finish it and see where it went!!
A supernatural tale involving a family curse brought on by love, secrets, and lies, Wolvercraft Manor is an entertaining gothic romance.
The story as a whole was good. The main character Saige’s family drove me mad. The poor girl! The romance fell a bit flat for me…I wanted more, Saige deserved more! The descriptions for the manor’s ghosts were perfectly spooky and would love to see them in live action!
If you’re a fan of gothic spooky romances, I would recommend this quick, fun read. 3.5/5⭐️s
**Thank you NetGalley, Cas E. Crowe, and Tangled Tree Press for graciously providing me with this ARC.**
Woaa i really enjoy the ghosts in this book!! The story about magic, witch, fairy, grudge colorful this book! I feel sorry for Saige, what she going through, how her family not believe her but she still try to save them. I glad she and Jasper really have true love not because Anna controlling Jasper, fairy ring prove it!
Thank you to NetGalley for provide this book, it is pleasure to review this book.
I’m pretty sure Wolvercraft Manor has become one of my favorite reads of 2023! I absolutely loved every bit of it! The paranormal madness of this story mixed with a sweet love story was everything I didn’t know I needed in my life! It was thrilling, unexpected and literally had me hooked from the very first chapter! If you love a good ghost story you will absolutely love this book!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this ARC!
The atmosphere of the book is very very creepy and very well done. The haunted old mansion., a storm that has them trapped and the ghosts who are very scary and quite well-described so this book may not be for the squeamish. I also felt this book was fast-paced. I would definitely recommend this book!!
Thank you NetGalley and Tangled Tree Publishing for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.
Now this is a proper horror novel! A cursed haunted house has obviously been done time and time again, but given the right twist with well-written imagery and you've got yourself a freshly-made horror story that's just waiting to put you on a knife's edge - and that's exactly what this book is! (I literally had to sleep with a night light on while reading this book bc that's how scared I was!)
Crowe did such a great job in mixing classic horror, the supernatural, and witchcraft all in one story to where all three balanced each other out instead of one out-shining the others. Also loved the main character's, Saige, transformation as starting out as a broken & tortured soul and then really developing into a true brave heroine that no longer lets fear paralyze her. The whole story was well-planned and the pacing was excellent - this book is perfect for anyone feeling the spooky-vibes or a creepy read!
I was quickly captured by the writing style and it is an easy story to fall into. I love Saige’s character and it made it easy to stay with her as she stumbles through chaos after chaos to fully understand her haunted family history. There were some twists that I didn’t see coming despite scattered hints. I was impressed at the intelligence and the heart of the plot. If you’ve stumbled across this book then it’s worth your time to read.
Family Drama? Check Haunted House? Check Modern Gothic Backdrop? Check Romantic Tension? Check
It's a story of love and loss told in the vein of a horror/thriller. If you are a fan of The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson or Rebecca by Daphne De Maurier, this might be right up your alley
I wanted this to be better, to be scary.... Instead this is a romance book disguised as a gothic horror.
The characters were weak, with too many things going on. Also, how many time can one person put their hair in a 'messy, but elegant' bun or ponytail....because Saige (yep) did it at every turn.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
The story was compelling and kept my attention as I read it in one sitting, even though there were things I needed to do. The plot twisted in a way that totally surprised me. There were many reasonable false clues. The characters are spot on.
I started this book not realising the genre. However, once started I couldn't put it down. It's a powerful story of live and hate and I would recommend it to those who like a bit of horror but not too much.
