My life wasn't that exciting; a degree in engineering, a small flat in London, and an ex-girlfriend that still texted me when she was drunk. Every day was a bore.
Everything changed when I found myself in Lanercost, a small medieval village, with no idea of how I arrived. The locals seemed friendly, and a chance encounter introduced me to several breathtakingly beautiful women. I decided to make the best of it. Armed with only a solid education, my wit, and the five pennies in my pocket, I decided to build a life here. No, not just a life; a House that would last for generations. A kingdom. I was going to conquer.
Of course, there were a few things I had to deal with before I could become some ghosts, the local constable that hated my guts, and that whole lack of money thing. Oh, and a freakin' dragon.
Author's This is fantasy written for the discerning reader, which means you can expect the hero to conquer on the battlefield as well as between the sheets.

The MC has limited memory and no idea of how he arrived, in his pj's & slippers, in a land similar to his British homeland but medieval in technology. There is also magic, but it is not common. The MC is not an Action Jackson type hero, but more of an "if you cant dazzel em with brilliance, baffle em with bs" type of guy. His first act is to abscond with a noble's misplaced bag, which fortunately for him has lots of coin inside. With a bit of luck and some silver tongued glibness, he quickly gets a lover and a place to crash. Then he begins to make plans to create a new life for himself and the women he intends to woo.
The writing was acceptable, the world building ok and the characters were decent. The female characters were the most memorable, they did get more screen time than the male supporting characters.
Of course the MC soon starts off writing checks with his mouth that his behind will have difficulty funding. I did appreciate that he is willing to listen, evaluate and fact find before running off half-cocked. Still, he muddles his way through. I do plan on reading the next installment.
Spoiler alert...
The major thing that irked me is that the MC mouthed off before using an untested weapon, which could end badly for any number of reasons. What if only simple mechanisms operate due to some mystic ratonale or the ratios of ingredients were off, or just flaws in artificing? As an engineer he should have known better. I understand that he was in a bind, but engineers that desire to stay alive tend to be more cautious.
%40 Generous two star for plot. But the MC is a misogynist, feels like reading a john Von stray, just less blatant. tanked my exceptions with non ironic use of 'boner', just like 'boobs', I instantly drop my exceptions. Has no memory, but somehow has a towering ego out the gate, instantly assumes hes going to have a bevy of women. Clearly a story about someone who just wants to sleep with as many different women as possible, and coincidentally found themselves in a situation conducive to that.
There are some good points, but I felt myself cringe at some of the things the mc says.
I usually enjoy books that would be labeled as bad by most, and usually have no problem with 'flaws' most people complain about, but this book was a DNF even before 10 chapters in. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it's an inspiration to writers that you truly can get anything sold if you just write it.
Nope. Made it a bit past 10% but just couldn't take the MC. "Arrogant smart-ass idiot horndog" would be a good set of descriptors for him. Maybe he develops, but there is no way I could wade through more of this to find out.
Nothing at all yet to happen except for looking at a waitress and "almost getting a boner"
Why go through all this portal fantasy nonsense if all it does is make a story awkward and waste 50 pages on "You don't seem like a local, are you a faraway traveler?"
I was not a big fan of this story it was well written but that's where it ends the characters didn't really have any depth and the mc was over confident and under powered I won't be reading anymore of this series
