As a Politically Incorrect book, you know that this is about something you aren't supposed to like, but do anyway. If you don't like forbidden pleasures, or descriptions of something society says you aren't supposed to like – don't read this book.
Hani is an old school powerful alpha male. He's constrained by his society's beliefs of proper behavior, but his Wife is American and is unaware of Hani's society's rules. Shannon is a modern American woman, and is fiercely independent. They can't seem to relate to each other to the point where Shannon believes their marriage is one of convenience, but Hani married her for love.
What he does to make her understand his culture, and force her to see that he loves her is what makes this book a Politically Incorrect book, and I won't reveal it. Suffice it to say that they find their HEA, in a manner that I found absorbing, and entertaining. I read Subjugated in one quick setting. I don't think I put my Nook down at all.
I greatly enjoyed this short story. A very stoic younger Sheikh falls in love/lust with an older woman. He follows his countries very traditional customs and by doing so his lady is uncertain of her position. Happy ending! Linda
I've been foaming at the mouth for a new Jaid Black release and I was a little disappointed in Subjugated. Not to say I didn't enjoy reading this spicy romance but I think I would have liked it more if this book were longer. I didn't feel like I really go to know Shannon and why she married Hani bin Nasser. There didn't seem much emotional development probably due more with the length of the book, but Subjugated is worth buying if you are a Jaid Black fan. I would recommend buying in ebook format since it is cheaper.
P.S. In the back blurb Jaid Black mentions she is currently working on another Trek book woo and hoo!!!!
This is a very short read. And as such, there's only so much space for an author to develop adequate conflict, characterization and emotion. If written right, a book of this length will give the reader a satisfying blend of all three. Subjugated does just that. Sure, I wouldn't have minded if it had been...oh, say...another 100 pages or so :) But it's great having a new Jaid Black book to read, and I'm happy to hear she's writing again!
Jaid, if you're reading this, *please* write the next Viking Underground book.
There's no real substance to this besides the tired romance cliche of powerful sheik and western bride. The conclusion is forced and not believable, and the characters are all flat and pretty fucking annoying, honestly.
This is part of the "politically incorrect" series put out by Ellora's Cave. I didn't find it particularly shocking even though it featured a couple who marry so the Saudi husband can get a green card. Not bad but not Jaid Black's best.
3.5 stars. I love a good culture clash romance when it's done right, and this one did a good job. It kind of read like a Harlequin serial, but still enjoyable.
