My four-year-old loved this! When we finished, she said she wanted to try “reading” it; it was pretty cute what she remembered and regurgitated.
Woven into a story about a little boy who moves in next door and has an ant farm, you and your kids will learn a bit about ants. There’s even an unexpected plot twist, which for a book of this type, I thought was impressive.
Make sure this gets added to your purchase list! My almost two-year-old even sat for it!

Content Considerations: nothing to note.
**Like my reviews? Then you should follow me! Because I have hundreds more just like this one. With each review, I provide Content Considerations, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!
If you’re considering a book or looking for a new title to read, check out my highly categorized shelves, read my reviews and Friend or Follow me to spiff up your feed with clean, wholesome, living books.
My daughter said, “Now I know lots about ants. We have ants too. I love learning about ants.”
As a mom that homeschools, I am appreciative of these older I Can Read books that have actual substance and yet allowu children to read on their own nor aloud to me.
A new family moves into a neighborhood, and two boys who are already friends get to make a new friend. The story has treehouses and tin can phones, and a horned toad as a pet. There are instructions for making your own ant nest (what I knew as an ant farm when I was younger). Science lessons about ants are woven into the story.
Fair warning, some of the story has one wild colony of ants raiding the colony of ants of a different color, slaughtering, and carting babies away, leaving body parts behind. It's not overdone, but if you idolize nature, you might not like it.
There's a nice balance, I think, between how much the boys are allowed to do things on their own, and when they are under able supervision of grown men.
I seesawed between three stars and four stars on this, but I don't like giving three-star ratings, so went with my default four stars.
