Lock the door and get ready to follow your bliss…Kara is a sex columnist who believes lovemaking is a natural physical function and nothing more. When she meets a J.M—a Tantra master who thinks sex is the way to reach a higher spiritual plane—she thinks he's whacked. But when he volunteers to tutor her in the ancient sensual arts and show her what Tantra is all about—one look at his smoking hot body and wildly good looks, and it's an offer she can't refuse. After a few intoxicating nights in J.M.'s arms, Kara feels a deep connection to the man who's brought her most decadent fantasies to life. And she wonders if the soul-shattering bliss she's experienced has something to do with Tantra--or if J.M.'s simply stolen her heart…

Sex scenes needed more emotional development. Tantra sex ideas were interesting. Heroine was disappointing.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
It felt like most of the book consisted of sex scenes, but the actual page count puts them at about 34%. Kara was ok in the beginning, but by the end of the book, I didn’t like her. She was like a selfish kid in a candy store. She meets JM and has amazing sex with him. Then she says can we do it with two men? Then she wants to do it with more than two men. Then she wants men kidnapping her, tying her up, and having their way with her. She keeps asking for more. JM is happy to create and fulfill all of her fantasies. He’s doing it out of love. She’s not. She is insensitive to JM at one point by going off with another man, hoping JM won’t know, but he does. I did not like her when she did that. It felt contrived for the purpose of conflict. Sure she has some issues from her past (fear of abandonment and hurt by someone she loves), but her actions make her unsympathetic. I didn’t see any reason for JM to fall in love with her. But since JM had been visualizing someone coming into his life, the mystical connection is supposed to provide the validity for his “love at first sight.” I reluctantly accepted that.

I like sex scenes that are emotionally charged, but there wasn’t enough emotional development. As a result I was kind of bored with the sex. I liked the sex in the beginning, but without the emotional element, it became repetitive. There wasn’t much story, so read this for the sex, not the story. Tantra ideas are part of this including the idea of whole body orgasm which was interesting, but I wanted more details. There is group sex (multiple men with one woman), rear door activity, and light bondage.

STORY BRIEF:
JM is a (sex) tantra master and author of a book. He will be a speaker at a week long sex conference. Kara writes a sex column for a woman’s magazine. She is attending the conference for the purpose of spicing up her column. They first meet on an airplane sitting next to each other. The trip is delayed due to weather, and they spend the night together in a hotel. Kara is doing “sex with a stranger for one night” and thinks she’ll never see him again. She is shocked to see him at the conference. JM has been visualizing a perfect woman coming into his life. When he sees Kara he feels she is the one and falls in love at first sight. He hopes to convince her of the same thing after a week together at the conference.

DATA:
Story length: 238 pages. Swearing language: mild. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 17. Approximate number of sex scene pages: 81. Setting: current day Cleveland, Ohio, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Copyright: 2010. Genre: erotic contemporary romance.

DNF. The summary is misleading, and some of the sex scenes were unappealing to me personally. Quinn bothered me as a character and gave me the ick. For being a romance book there was not much romance.

Not the best I've read by Opal Carew but not the worst either.

Series Note:
This book is a follow up to Carew's book Blush in that it continues the story of Tantra expert, J.M. I don't think you have to have read Blush first. It's been ages since I read it and I don't remember much and this one read okay. But it can't hurt to read Blush first.

Summary:
Kara Spencer is a sex columnist heading to a sex conference where her editor has asked her to interview Tantra expert Jeremy "J.M." Smith. Kara might think Tantra is a bunch of hooey but she'll do her job. Meanwhile, J.M. has just left a relationship where he was a third in hopes of finding a woman who is just for him. The moment he sees Kara, he knows she's the one.

But Kara doesn't believe in love and as she spends time with J.M. he opens her up to all kinds of sexual possibilities. It's a whole new world for her. J.M. wants more than just some fun, though. Can he convince her that they can have a real future together?

Review:
I keep reading Opal Carew's books and sometimes I wonder why. I've read a few of hers that are real stinkers. I think I keep hoping one will be a book that pulls everything together. Because I - mostly - enjoy the alternative sexuality in Carew's books...not always, Six, for example, was just too much. But on the whole I like that she explores different types of relationships and sexuality. So I keep coming back for more because of that. On the other hand, one area that Carew comes up completely lacking is the emotional development of the characters and the relationships. In a lot of the books I've read of hers I feel like I hardly know the characters and feel like the relationships are too based on sex with not enough emotional connection. So I keep hoping to read a book of her that pulls it altogether because I think it would make a great book.

As for this book, it falls in the range mentioned above. Lots of exploration from an alternative sexuality standpoint, and not nearly enough emotional development.

I didn't realize when I started reading this book that it was a follow up to "Blush". A few pages in something struck me as familiar so I poked around the books of hers I'd read and found the connection. In Blush, J.M. helped a woman get past some sexual blocks and entered into an open threesome relationship with the woman and her boyfriend. I reread my review of Blush and one of the things I'd commented on was that I felt J.M.'s status in the relationship was too nebulous, like you didn't know if it'd last or not. Turns out, no. Because this book focuses on him having left that relationship and looking for his own woman.

There's definitely some heat between J.M. and Kara but like I said earlier, the emotional connection, especially from Kara's side, was lacking. They have some great sexual chemistry but I really was just left feeling like I didn't know these characters all that well and definitely didn't feel like they'd connected enough to head into a long-term relationship. I wanted more on that end.

But really, this book is all about the sex. It's what takes up a large majority of the text. Lots and lots of sex. Of all different kinds. You really have to have an open mind when reading this one. There's threesomes, foursomes, stranger sex, role playing, bi-sex, toys, etc etc etc. So you have to have a pretty high kink tolerance to read this one.

It wasn't a terrible book, though. I like it somewhat. I just wanted more from the emotional angle of the book and maybe a little less sex. I think if you've read Opal Carew before you'll have a pretty good idea of what you're getting from this book.

WARNING, this book contains: explicit sex, explicit language, m/f/m sex, anal sex, oral sex, m/m/m/f sex with two of the males being bisexual, toys, bondage, a mild BDSM role-play scene, stranger sex, and I'm sure I'm missing a few things but you get the point, right?

Not bad but not really good either
I liked that for once the heroine willing to discover all her fantasies was not a blushing virgin or close to one and that she showed some hesitations a few moments in time.
The hero on the other hand looked a bit too perfect to be real.
What let me down is that, as often in erotica, I did not get when or more especially how the hero and heroine could fall in love with each other. It just so happened and I just so did not buy it ;(
Regarding the steamy scenes, they were rather good though not the scorchiest ever and I would have to exclude the special tantra ones, which left me cold and slightly baffled.

Ugh. I think this might be the last Opal Carew book I read.

This was just like a trashy porno. Bad dialogue, corny characters and trashy smut sex scenes. Nothing sexy or romantic. Just not for me.

And Quinn makes me feel gross. His character was so unnecessarily disgusting and turned me off every scene he was in.

This book was disappointing, but that was probably my fault for assuming it was about tantric sexuality, when it was really just a trashy modern romance novel. Still, the tantric sex portrayed here seemed to be missing a lot.

Also, it was hard to get over the lack of safe sex practices, including vaginal sex after anal sex with no cleaning of the penis in between. It was also hard to feel that Kara was empowering herself when the initial fantasies she was exploring weren’t her own. And how about JM’s insistence that Kara was his one and only soul mate despite knowing almost nothing about her? That felt creepy and seemed like a superficial and overly simplistic portrayal of how someone would practice the law of attraction. I liked that Kara also felt (initially at least) that the idea that JM legitimately loved her was bonkers—but disappointed when at the end, she decided she loved JM.

Considering the author appears to be a woman of size, the depiction of every character as having a perfect body (despite no exercise, constant drinking, staying up all night fucking, and with no particular regard to what or when they ate) was another disappointment. Why not have sexually satisfied characters with real imperfect bodies?

The limited range of descriptive words also contributed to the low rating I gave this book: impaled her, cockhead, marble hard chest/cock/body, overwhelming masculinity, her slit, etc. The repetitiveness was too much!

As a reading public service, here are a few terms - taken from the book - which lack a certain... sensuality: back opening, buttocks, wet opening, mushroom, fluid, and helping. When writing a dirty book, keep in the actual act is actually kinda gross so you need to keep the language florid and euphemistic.

To be fair, as far as naughty tomes go, the book's central plot is singularly realistic. Setting the proceedings at a cerebral yet raunchy convention and characters as professionals in the field yields a believable plot. The book doesn't yield supremely believable male dialog, however. Over beers (Thewestchestarian doesn't care "beer" is already plural - fight me), even the most professional and worldly of men don't clinically and politely ask another man if they would like to "help" with an attractive women's nasty fantasies. That the offer doesn't start off "yo bro..." immediately disqualifies it from verisimilitude.

The writing and, in particular, the dialog, drifts frequently into textbook or even safety video territory. No real dramatic force propels the book and the inevitable Hallmark Channel ending is never left in doubt. But (tocks) the writing does move with alacrity from stilted encounter to encounter. In short, you could do worse than curling up on a couch with your buttocks in the standard seating position and this randy novel.

From the description I was expecting a sexy butting of heads between Kara and J.M. after they meet, and then a lot of sexy times with J.M. teaching Kara the ways of Tantra but instead Kara's kind of shy and a little on the stubborn, whiney side when it comes to Tantra. But when it comes to J.M. bringing some of her fantasies to life including multiple partners she's completely on board. To sum it up there is quite a lot of spice and a lot of fluff but if you're expecting a love story, yeah not there. There are times when Kara has a mind to think about J.M. and his feelings but it's more about her experiences. It's definitely a he fell first thing. I liked J.M. Kara was okay... but definitly wouldn't say I liked her. I listened to the audio for this and aside from the parts of the actual story I didn't like the narrators did an amazing job.

My smut reading experience is so far small, but growing. Sex scenes were fun and zesty. Love to see a woman trying/choosing things that feel good. J.M.s claim of knowing they were soul mates after seeing her for the first time: creepy & desperate. I have to admit, the logistics/physics of a few scenes seemed unlikely/implausible. All characters drawn superficially and no reason to see what connects the 2 main characters beyond happy sex (though, certainly not the worse thing ever to connect on and I'm not going to judge).

Very smutty! But should be when the characters are a sex columnist (Kara) and a Tantra master (J. M.). I wasn't a fan of Quinn (their third) He struck me as pushy when talking to Kara about doing things outside of her comfort zone. It annoyed me and struck me as something J.M. would've (should've?) stopped.

Bliss by Opal Carew is a must read. Kara and JM are great. I didn't like how Quinn was invited and then just took over. But in the end it all worked out. The sex scenes as usual with Opal's books are excellent.

If all you are looking for are steamy scenes, Bliss, the latest offering by Carew, delivers the heat (although pretty much 'been there done that, nothing really new). If you are looking for a romantic plot you might want to look elsewhere. That's mainly because there is hardly any plot at all. I usually say that the difference between romance and erotica, beside the fact that erotica is steamier (although with the new genre 'Romantica' that's changing), is that romance has a plot with maybe some steamy moments and erotica basically has sex with some plot, the goal of which is to tie the sex scenes together. Well, Bliss barely even has that. It was basically just one steamy scene after another (not that I'm really complaining). Kara Spencer is a sex columnist whose boss makes her to attend a sex conference. She is supposed to interview a Tantric master to get some tips for her readers. Kara is less than happy to complete this assignment, because she feels like her boss is hinting that her column is stale, and she also considers Tantra a bunch of mumbo jumbo. On route to the conference, she is seated next to a sexy man who calls himself J.M. They hit it off, and she throws caution to the wind and has a mind-blowing night with him, intending it to be a one night stand. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your view), J.M. has other ideas. He is actually Jeremy Smith, the Tantric master who Kara is supposed to interview. The minute he lays eyes on Kara, he knows she’s his perfect woman, his soul mate, and he has no intention of letting her go. He will do anything it takes to convince her that their relationship is more than a fling, and he is also determined to get her to love Tantra as much as he does. I found JM's whole 'if I visualize it, it will happen' attitude kind of hokey, but it worked to explain why this guy was willing to instantly fall in love with a stranger. With the minimal plot development and the fact that most of the sexy time was spent with multiple partners and not just the main couple, I found the whole HEA ending rather far-fetched. It still was a steamy, mindless read though, which is what I was looking for.

First, I want to say the Story summary on the book, is very misleading. From the summary, I was expecting the story to be a bit more about these two exploring Tantra, and this "spiritual Plane" they discover, and how it could be great sex for a couple, but really the Summary should have said:
Kara is a sex columnist who is on her way to an important Sex Conference, to interview Jeremy Smith-a Tantra master who thinks sex is the way to reach a higher plane. But while awaiting her flight she meets JM- the most attractive man she's ever laid eyes on. She's expecting a one night stand, but soon discovers JM, is Jeremy Smith. JM can help Kara bring some of her secret wishes to life, but will they go back to their usual lives at the end of the week, or will JM simply steal Kara's heart...

That would have been a more accurate description. Because Tantra hardly came up, and I think the story was more about Kara getting some 'real life' experiences for her Sex Column. Trying some 'fantasy' play in a safe situation. I didn't get the feeling Kara got a deep connection with JM until pretty much the end of the story, when Quinn is trying to make time with her. I really liked the various fantasy play scenes, but the author might have done better giving more back ground on Kara, and why she is against giving her heart to anyone, and how that colors her world view.

Was it a gripping story line? Nope. Was the story realistic? Maybe in an alternative universe. I get being open minded and trying new things but in this story it seemed a bit much. They both could have used a bit more backbone.
Kara a sex columnist meets J.M on an airplane on the way to a sex seminar. He is a tantric sex expert but does not represent himself as such. They are stranded & decide to spend the night together then go their separate ways. But it doesn't end there. He puts her sexual situations to broaden her horizons and experiences BUT yet he really likes her. Says it is love at first sight. This could serious backfire for him.
There are a lot of alternative sex scenes, so be warned.

This was my first book by Opal Carew. The reviews seemed mostly positive for it so I thought what the heck, I'll give it a try.

I LOVED JM as a character. He was fabulous and in my mind a well rounded character.

I like Kara at first and as the book continued I slowly started to dislike her.

There were plenty of sex scenes in the book to keep readers that like them them entertained, but I started to cringe inside whenever they came up because I felt bad for JM. He really loves Kara and 80% of the sex scenes were her with other men and not JM.

But overall, I liked the book and would recommend that you read it.

Tantra sex was supposed to be the premise of this story but a good portion of the plot focused on JM fulfilling Kara's sexual fantasies of menage, sex with a stranger, and dominance. Even though JM instantly knew Kara was his perfect woman, there wasn't a whole lot of romance. A big plus was that JM practiced his universal energy beliefs in his regular life, not just during sex. However, while the sex was fun, there wasn't much else beyond it making it a somewhat unsatisfying read. 3.5 stars.

At the airport on her way to a sex conference, Kara, a sex columnist meets and flirts with a handsome stranger. They share a passionate night and go their separate ways.

To her shock, they meet again at the sex conference. JM, her one night stand, turns out to be Jeremy, the Tantric sex expert she is supposed to interview.

Very enjoyable read. I would actually rate this 3.5 stars. I love that Kara is able to explore various fantasies with JM's help.

A pretty good effort by Opal Carew. The "hero" was a bit too wimpy for me, but I wasn't unhappy that the main character ended up with him. As with all Opal Carew books, the sex was amazing. (Has she ever written a book that doesn't have at least one group-s*x scene in it? Not that I'm complaining: I love it!)

New Author for me. Story was ok. Some menage and four-some. I enjoyed reading about the Tantra techniques however the story was a little too much "throw in sex scene after sex scene" for me. I did not feel like it built characters enough to get how they grew closer and were meant for each other....I might try another book by author but most are menage or multiple partners....not my thing.

I wasn't a fan of the Tantra part of this, which seemed like it was all of it. gave me flashbacks of alternative energy medicine that my previous job used to force me to learn and do to pts and it was a nightmare. I just couldn't see past the woowoo part of the book to read and enjoy much else of it.
