Druid-born Isla is one of the deadliest she-devils ever to serve the forces of darkness. Immortal Highland warrior, Hayden Campbell falls hard for the enemy in this one and it's much better than the previous books of this series.
3 1/2 "I love you, but I hate you, so I don't want to love you." Stars!
This series continues to entertain me. It's the world building more than the romance that I like most about it. Historical Highlanders with destructive gods in them, teaming with (good) druids to fight against the ultimate evil drau- evil druid (I don't really know how to spell that because I've been listening to this series and I'm almost sure it's a made up word.) bent on world domination and enslaving everyone! I lurve it! The romance is good, just what is happening in the good vs evil fight keeps me coming back! On to the next Highland Warrior very soon. Happy reading!
As the first book in the series that is not centered on one of the MacLeod brothers, I will admit to being nervous. Add to that, the druid involved is none other than Isla, who was forced to become a drough. And the Warrior is Hayden, who hates ALL droughs on sight. Not sure how that was going to work out. But it did and I really did enjoy it.
Lots and lots of emotions in this one. The characters felt so real too. What was more, they were dealing with the idea that there is good and bad in everyone. And how do you deal with choices that were forced upon someone? Is it there fault or are they judged by who they are now. It was not an easy answer. I was glad that these two characters were up to the task. Both carry some evil and have done things they wish they hadn't had to, but they are drawn to each other, and learn to care for each other.
I was glad there wasn't an easy answer for these two. I would have been disappointed if that were the case. There needed to be a struggle as they both come to terms with who they are and what they've had to go through.
No surprise that the evil drough, Deirdre is not completely gone. Saw that coming in the last book. No way it was that easy to get rid of the witch...yeah you know what I want to call her. She freaks me out with her temper tantrums and speaking to the devil scenes. I really am hoping they find a way to get completely rid of her by the end of this series. Seriously can't have her hanging around.
I really enjoy the family that is being built at MacLeod castle. It's this home for those fighting against Deirdre but it's also a lot of peeps that don't fit other places. They work together to make a place that's safe and comfortable. I love that the castle sits on the cliffs overlooking the sea. The sea played a part in this story. I love the water. It's soothing whether it's the sea or a lake. So it was so nice having it become a part of the story.
I've enjoyed this series so much. It's nice to put a story to the names I already knew from the spin-off series. Each book could be read as a stand alone, but they are so good you'll want to devour them all.
These two were drawn to each other and had to work out their issues. Through their struggle, I fell for them and their story.
Quickie Review---Be mindful of spoilers that may be in this review. Proceed at your own risk.
Untamed Highlander is the fourth book in the Dark Sword. Now that I have finished throughout the authors contemporary books, I now want to get into her Dark Universe series. So I kinda jumped into the middle of the series not realizing some years ago I read the first three in this series. Once I got back into it, I started slowly to remember this world and its very fascinating. If you are looking for some historical PNR to read, then this definitely needs to be on your list. Its very fascinating how she developed the world building for this one here. And this one has an enemies to lovers feel as the heroine as been used as a weapon against the Druid warriors. I really was intrigued to see how the redemption would happen and Donna Grant handled this aspect very well. I will say that some parts of the romance elements were slower. Not sure if thats just this book or what, but I did love the world that we are brought into with this one here. So I do recommend this if you are looking for something different in your historical or PNR reading.
Note: For your overall reading enjoyment I suggest strongly to read this series in order because of the ongoing plot and world building.
My Review: In a world where the forces of darkness plot to rule the world with black magic, a small group of warriors refuses to align themselves with this evil. These immortal Highland warriors all have an archaic god inside them, each has a different power, and they were turned by the forces of darkness but escaped. Now they have joined forces to defeat the evil Deirdre who created them and just when they thought that the battle was won… it starts all over again.
For Hayden Campbell brings home a survivor of the battle, the wounded Isla. Forced to serve Deirdre as a drough Isla shares a connection with her and therefore knows Deirdre has not been destroyed, that they are just in the midst of the calm before the storm. But Hayden not does feel calm at all; he cannot reconcile his budding feelings for this drough with his vow to kill any drough he comes across. But Isla is not his enemy; she is just another victim of Deirdre’s hunger for power. Their passion for one another is something he thought he would never experience, but their love is fragile and Deirdre’s hold on Isla is strong, maybe too strong...
With Untamed Warrior we return to Donna’s Grant fabulous world of the Dark Sword Novels. It is already part 4 in this unique series and Donna Grant created another rich and layered story by blending myth, history, fantasy, suspense, romance and paranormal elements perfectly. Once again Donna Grant had me fall for her story and hero hook, line and sinker from page one, her writing is smooth, fast-paced and addictive with a capital A.
All of the warriors are scarred by their past thanks to Deirdre. But Hayden Campbell is consumed by his hatred for droughs, he can think of nothing else. It was interesting to follow his emotional journey, how he battled with himself to deny his attraction for Isla and his need to protect her versus his need to protect his newfound family (his fellow warriors) and his aversion for droughs. Hayden has the god of massacre inside him, Ouraneon. He has the power to call up and control fire. He hides behind a wall of bluntness but deep down he is very lonely. He copes with his affection for Isla by doing the hot/cold routine; he kisses her passionately then completely ignores her. My heart cried out for Hayden as I so wanted to see him happy again.
Of all the women introduced in this series Isla is by far the most tortured one. Almost 500 years she has been Deirdre’s prisoner, to safe her family she was forced to do Deirdre’s bidding. Forced to serve the black magic for so long Isla hardly knows herself anymore. She is haunted by the awful things she has done and keeps to herself. She is smart, fierce, courageous and her magic is strong. She only survived Deirdre’s cruelty for so long by showing no fear and no emotions. Yet Hayden confuses her, he shatters her self-control to pieces.
I love how Donna Grant builds up their romance. Their attraction is clear and instant from the start, it rolls of the pages in huge waves. Their inner struggle is moving, both have flaws, both lash out, their honesty and bluntness emotionally hurts the other, yet they can’t stay away from each other. They understand one another so well, they recognize the loneliness in each other, and their connection is so deep that it is unbreakable. Their love scenes are passionate and intense. And even though the odds were against them, I was rooting for them! I felt they were a perfect match in every way.
For me the emphasis in Untamed Highlander is on the romance between Hayden and Isla. The ongoing plotline of the battle against Deirdre and her evil is there but more in the background. That does not mean there are no new developments, Isla provides the warriors and reader with new information and as a reader you can feel that change is coming. Still the story is perfectly in balance and reads like clockwork. And I love the dialogues between the warriors, they are full of wit. Each warrior has his own charms and makes you crave for more Dark Sword stories!
Untamed Highlander is a powerful, passionate and emotional read. Hayden will linger long in your heart after you finished this story. I loved the emotional journey of Hayden and Isla, their romance is intense, dark and addictive from start to finish! Next stop in the Dark Sword Series is Shadow Highlander, Galen’s story, it will be released August 30, 2011.
5 estrellas!
This is the fourth book in the Dark Sword series and is a part of the greater Dark World. Donna Grant does create a wonderful world, with many fantastical creatures. So, if you find this book compelling and entertaining, the world does continue and evolve. This series was read as a part of the Audible Escape package.
This is the story of Hayden and Iona. She is a powerful drough, who was forced into the drough ceremony by Diedre. He is a Warrior that is hell bent on killing all droughs. The two fight the attraction of each other, she who wants to die and he wants her dead. However, when they get close to each other they forget everything except each other. The passion they share for and against each other, will it bind them together or rip them apart.
This was my favourite book from the series so far. The characters werw incredibly well-developed, with a depth that made feel their every triumph and heartache.
The romance was pure magic—intense, believable, and full of a passion that lights up every page. The world-building was seamless that draw me into a rich and captivating universe that I never wanted to leave.
From start to finish, the plot was a masterpiece of pacing, suspense, and emotional resonance.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to read one of Donna Grants highlander books & not fall in love w/ the Hero. Impossible. I dare anyone of you to read this series and then tell me you do NOT want to marry these highlanders & have their babies... PFFFFT, never happen. C'mon August! Want book 5!
A ver, a ver.
Isla and Hayden such a great story it was touch and go there for a while, I did not know how Isla was going to get away from Diedra but I am glad she did. He gave up his anger and put it in the right place finally, but now how are they going to get rid of Diedra she basically is unkillable. What will they have to do to overcome her.
I ended up liking this book better than the others in the series, it took a while for me to really get into it but it was good once the story picked it.
Wow! I wasn't expecting this one to be so amazing! From previous books I honestly thought it would be Isla and Phelan. But I was pleasantly surprised! I definitely saw the twist at the end though. This was like a 6 star read! Better than the first 3!
Thinking they had finally rid the world of the great evilness that was Deirdre, Warriors Hayden Campbell and Fallon MacLeod are searching the area around Cairn Toul looking for survivors of the last battle. It seems to be a lost cause when Hayden comes upon a grievously wounded young woman. Determined to save this woman that he feels a compelling attraction to, Hayden brings her to the MacLeod castle for healing. It is there that Hayden discovers his foundling is none other than Isla, the Drough that aided Deirdre in capturing Warriors and Druids to be tortured, killed or turned to Deirdre’s underlings. Hayden despises Droughs and has sworn an oath to kill as many as he comes across. It was a Drough that wiped out his entire family. He should have left her on the mountain to die, but the MacLeods and their friends are determined to save Isla and possibly bring her to their side. Hayden is torn, he wants the little Drough but she is his hated enemy.
This is one of my favorite Highlander series, although they don’t all wear kilts, the heroes in this series are all possessed by ancient gods and have the ability to transform into these fearsome beings. Mmmm. Hayden is extra special because he’s a big blonde with a brogue. Yum, but he’s also really damaged and has a HUGE prejudice against Drough druids. Perhaps somewhat justified, but it presents a major stumbling block for his fledgling feelings for Isla. (for some strange reason I’m very alliterative today) I had problems developing sympathy for Isla. She has done some truly tremendously terrible things under the aegis of her captor and master Deirdre. Yes, she had reasons and she regretted her actions, but still, I’m talking Hitleresque horrible. (I’m sorry, I can’t turn it off). Luckily the other warriors and their women are much more tolerant than Hayden and myself, offering their friendship and protection. As with all things, I’m about balance and redemption. Redemption can only be had when a like and just payment has been proffered. I just couldn’t wrap my head around how one poor druid could make recompense for such heinous acts. She does her best, though and by the end, I was pulling for her.
Hayden was a sneaky warrior in his story. He thought he could act all cold and aloof towards Isla during the day and then pop in for a little bedtime snack. I cry foul on that. Bad Highlander, bad! Either you forgive her or you don't, no taksies backsies! I take these warriors and their ongoing tales very personally because I've followed the series since it's inception, and when one of them acts poorly, I feel it is my duty to rap a knuckle or two. New avenues for the continuation of this wonderfully romantic and addictive series continue to pop up through each book. I'm really, REALLY needing for someone to put the final smackdown on Deirdre and her nasty little yellow minions. If you haven't started this series yet, you are missing out on some really good reading material. I just love these warriors and their chosen mates, I bet you will too.
In book four, Untamed Highlander, to story moves from the MacLeod brothers to their friends.
After the battle and defeat of Deirdre Fallon and Hayden go back to the mountain to look for warrior or Druid survivors.
Hayden Campbell brings home Isla - a druid who was Deirdre's servant. In the previous book there were glimpses of Islas struggle with the dark magic and her need to protect her family that kept her for 500 years in Deirdre's grasp. Now that her family is dead the only thing that remains is the connection with Deirdre. Through that connection Isla knows that the evil druid is not dead but regrouping and regenerating a new body.
When Hayden understand that Isla is a drough - dark Druid he cannot reconcile his growing feelings versus the need to kill every drough he comes across. Isla is not his enemy but just a victim as he is and his attraction that he feels is hard to ignore.
Off all the female characters Isla is the most tortured and plagued by the influence of the dark magic and Hayden is ruled by his hatred for droughs.
It was interesting and frustrating to follow Hayden's battle with himself. He continously his attraction for Isla wile being unable to resist. I was not a fan of the hot/ cold attitude that he gave Isla and at times I found annoying the way he treated her: kissing her or bedding her to completely ignoring her.
In the end he admitted and accepted his feelings for Isla. The overkill for me was the fact that Isla is the drough that killed Hayden's family. I found that too much to be added to the already tormented and fragile relationship.
I am glad the plot slowed down and new details are added to the story with Isla's arrival. I am looking forward for the other stories since I cannot see an end to Deirdre.
This installment of the Dark Sword Series was about Hayden and Isla.
Hayden is a very passionate warrior with intense loyalty to the ones he considers family. He has incredible strength and the ability to control fire. Isla is one of the most powerful she-devils ever to live. She has spent over 500 year unwillingly serving Deidre until an attack on the mountain left her injured and alone. She is rescued by Hayden and taken back the the MacLean castle. Hayden and Isla have combustible chemistry that you can literally feel coming off the pages. Hayden is a passionate lover and an intense warrior. Isla is a strong vibrant women who spends most of her time alone so she is confused by her feelings for the people around her.
This is an amazingly passionate story that has you on the edge of your seat the entire time. There were times during the story that I was wishing I could reach into the book and smack Hayden upside the head. He was such a stubborn man but had good reason the feel the way he did. When he was passionate with Isla the chemistry was palpitation. He is definitely one of the most amazing lovers I have ever read.
The storyline is a bit slower then the previous books because it is focused on Isla's fight against Deidre and about Hayden and Isla's relationship. To sum it up...this is a very passionate and intense story and definitely a recommended read!!!
The fourth book in the Dark Sword series. I was really looking forward to Hayden Campbell's story and his match with Isla, an evil Druid, and therefore, sworn enemy. Hayden finds Isla injured and has an immediate and confusing connection to her. He takes her away to the MacLeod castle to recuperate and they both learn that they have feelings for each other that could be very dangerous. I loved Isla's strength of character and her intelligence. Hayden is, of course, beautiful but conflicted. When they come together, the love is really palpable. I also liked that we got to see all of the brothers and their wives. Many characters come into play and you an definitely see thee will be a lot of characters to draw from for later books in ether series.
I had a great privilege to receive an ARC of this book and OMG how happy I am! I think it's the best of the series so far. Hayden is a tormented hero who is torn between his past and his heart desire. Isla as a drough has a choice to make and it is not an easy one.
Great read and flawless story. Humor and action with hot hot love scenes :) Everything you might want - great story, sexi hero, strong herione and great read :) Loved it and thank you Donna for an opportunity to enjoy the book.
This novel is #4 in the series, "Dark Sword" by author; Donna Grant. This novel is definitely part of the greater fantasy world of the Dark Sword. It's very compelling and entertaining to any reader that enjoys this genre. The main characters have this incredible chemistry that you can't help but to root for them even through all the obstacles and turmoil from each other's past. This novel had it's dark moments but how it was written was just unique in itself. Definitely recommend this novel, series and author. You won't be disappointed! Happy Reading!
3.5 (rounded up) I liked Hayden and Isla. My only issue is I thought both where a little too angsty. There was a moment I thought they got over their issue(s), but it was a brief one. The friendships between the women and the Warriors are strong ones, and I like how everyone has each others back. The biggest thing? The big bad. Deidre. The overall story-arc continues.
Another great addition to the series! I couldn't get enough of Hayden and his wicked ways! Yum! His love interest in this book was a surprise and the passion between the two was hot!
Had a great ending and as the saga continues I am anxious for the next book about Galen.
