They were once inseparable, the best of friends. He was her knight in shining armor, she was his damsel in distress. But for reasons only Callen and his hormones are aware of, he and his childhood friend, Tierney, began to grow apart.

She's always been the soft but strong type. However, after her father's sudden and tragic death, she finds herself leaning on Callen again. And despite everything always changing between them, creating a constant flow of confusion, he's all too happy to be there for her. Just like when they were kids.

The problem is, they're not kids anymore. Tierney’s a mess, Callen is leaving for college, and life wants to get in the way again. But tethered hearts always stay connected, and the pull they feel toward one another only seems to grow. Even though the timing is all wrong.

As Tierney's strength dwindles, Callen's is tested more than it's ever been before, and a perfect storm is on the way. One that is sure to rain down conflicts and feelings and emotions that will challenge the essence of who they were, who they are, and what they will become.

I was depressed at the ending, but I heard Callen and Tee get a happily ever after in the 2nd novel?! Yes please! I absolutely love them as a couple and the first book gave a timeline of their friendship and what it is now. Full of romance, steam, and lots of heartbreaks, JERI MARIE has similarly to COLLEEN HOOVER! Prepare to have your heart bloom, then to be crushed! Welcome to Oakwood!

This is the first Jeri Marie book I’ve read. I picked it up because I saw a post about her next book, reader, Resilience.
I was pleasantly surprised. I was interested in the story and the development of the characters. I have had family members who have struggled with the same issues in this book and I think Jeri did a great job at showing it. The only reason it’s 4⭐️s instead of 5 is I did find it hard to keep up with the time frame. I found myself going back and forth to see how days, weeks or months had gone by. But I loved it!! Can’t wait to get my hands on Resilience!!!

My thoughts ~ Such a sad but heartfelt story about Tierney and her life at a young age while in high-school having to find herself. Among that she is finding her way through friendships and relationships.
I felt for tee whole heartedly I know many people who have and still do go through very similar heartbreaking situations on a daily base. The way tee works through it is real and raw and the emotions are shown in the writting that was very well done.
I have a serious love hate relationship with callen I know he and tee have there issues in the beginning but he is such a sweetheart and the way he cares for her just warmed my heart for most of the book that is. However I was definitely torn between loving him and hating him for some of his choices.. I'm left questioning him and them for sure but im hoping for the best...
definitely a small town romance, best friends to lovers type of story... while dealing with grief and addiction all while trying to find yourself in the world you were given.
The way the book was written and the topics at hand,I felt were so well put into words. If you have had family go throw addition or even yourself this book really hits home. It really breaks down the raw real things all parties involved with addition go through definitely Had me feeling a world win of different emotions.

Ps. The cliffhanger broke My heart come on second bookkkkkkk need asap 😅🤌

"As always, I'm more in tune to her soul than I should be. More familiar with her heart than I deserve. She's everything I've ever wanted. Ever needed. Ever desired."

I am both sad and glad I did not know about this book when it released. Sad because I cannot believe I missed out on it for so long and glad because it is book one of a duet and the second book is not available....yet...but releasing soon!

I love, love, love a friends to lovers (especially childhood best friends) and in all of those we tend to get glimpses of the characters through the years but this one....this one right here is Callen and Tierney's story of going from best friends to kind of enemies in a way to friends again to lovers.

Having grown up together along with Callen's sister Jamie there were all inseparable. Even at young ages Cal and Tee had this way of communicating with the other, being in tune to each other came so naturally to them. When Tee's father passes away suddenly it is Cal who finds her because his first thought after hearing the news was of Tee.

Ms. Marie sets these two up nicely with mentions of their childhoods and when the time came that Cal just stopped talking to Tee and they start to form a new type of friendship as she learns the new life without her father and a mother who seems to forget she is a mother. As the new friendship grows feelings start to resurface and the moment when both of them finally admit to the other how they feel my heart was soring with happiness. It is so crystal clear that they belong together. Cal is this sweet and tender man when it comes to his Tee...she is his world. So there I was reading happily along in this book as these two have pretty much a drama free relationship and then I was smacked in the face with the part of the plot that tends to have a reader wanting to throw their kindles!

When this story took its hurtful turn I seriously felt like sliding down along the wall and not moving. I mean I knew something had to happen because of the second book coming out but I just could not believe it goes down the way it does. My heart physically hurt for both Cal and Tee. Jeri Marie wrote this so well and I was so invested in this couple that I was crushed by the events that occur at the end leading into the second book. It's like she sat there and thought, "well the readers have had a fairly easy and enjoyable read so far....let's change that drastically"...lol! This does end in a cliffhanger of sorts that will have you wanting book two ASAP!!!!

🌿Friends to Lovers
🌿Unrequited Love
🌿Timeline Set In the Past
🌿First Book in a Duet
Triggers:
🌿Loss of a Love One
🌿Drug Use/Abuse
Let me preface this review with saying this book hit home for me in ways I didn’t think possible. When I read the book and the content of it involving loss of a love one was around the time I mourn the loss of my father. The connection I was able to have with the book, with Tierney most of all. What she went through in this book were almost identical thoughts, things I was always able to formulate into words.
I absolutely love this book and am so happy it is a duet so that I can see where Tierney and Callen’s story goes. It is a beautiful piece that is heartwarming and heart wrenching. You will cry, you will laugh, you will experience their story so vividly that it’s mind boggling. This is one I wish I could read again for the first time.
Then going into the second book there is so much more that needs to be told and I’m ready but I’m not ready for what is going to happen.
Thank you, Jeri for the ARC and giving me the opportunity to read your story that I connect with so much!

I didn’t know what to expect from this book when I picked it up except that I was excited to get the arc copy of the 2nd one and I needed to catch up. But what ended up happening was so much more than that. It started with the 1st page: Feb 9th. A date that comes up twice and happens to be my birthday. This story has checked in with who I used to be, reminded me of some old wound, how important it is to have felt them. Tee is also one my nicknames, I don’t have a Callen per sayin my past, but one that comes close - I feel like I know her, I was her from time to time and if I was to put pen to paper it would sound something like this. Thank you @jerimarieauthor for this story and for faith to have picked me to read the next one🩶 #books #arcreader #booksofig #5starread #romance #reader #bookstagram #spicybooks #oakwood #essence #bookworm #popularbooks #romancereader

This book is a romance book, a very sweet and relatable book, I would recommend it to all to read. The characters you see through their stories how this could really be your life one day. With the struggles they face with addiction and how it tears apart the relationships between mother, daughter, son, father, girlfriend, wife, boyfriend and people around you.
Tierney, best friend to Jamie and while overcoming her father addiction which lead to overdose fell in love with her best friend brother Callen, but he broke her heart doing exactly what her father was doing, which betrayed her love for him.
You will see how Callen really cares for her.
But In the end this is helping both to shape the people they are pushing to become. A very heartfelt book worth reading.
Thank you author.

Sweet but Sad Romance

This book starts with Tee looking back 8 years and what happened before she left her hometown, and has not returned since. It then goes back in time before she left and what happened causing her to leave. This book follows Tee while in high school and her relationships with her best friends and her mom. Her relationships have become strained after dealing with the loss of her dad. Jaime is her best friend and her brother Cal was also super close until a few years ago. After the death of Tee's dad, her and Cal start becoming close again. Now she has to leave town because she can't face the people hurting her and she feels more betrayed than ever. Can't wait to read the next book!

This is a very emotional book, and I really enjoyed it. It has more of a sad vibe to it as the FMC struggles so much.

This contemporary romance is a wonderful emotional read.
This book has a slow burn type of romance, along with some heart break.
The spice is this book is very mild, making it suitable for a wide variety of readers.
The book moves at a steady pace as it follows the life of the FMC, after she loses her dad. During her healing journey she finds love, and pain along the way.
The book offers the POV from both MCs giving you a in depth look at their thoughts. It helped create strong characters with distinct personalities, and feelings.
The world building is done nicely as it is set in contemporary times, making it easy to slip into the story.

I received an ARC for my honest review.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It felt like I was reading a pair of journals looking back on Tee’s and Callens life of their teenage years.
You get dual point of views of a romance between the two characters. You feel what they are feeling and root for them when things don’t go as planned.
I enjoyed that the book ended on a cliff hanger and now I need book 2 asap. Instead of wrapping it up in one book we now get another story of theirs what seems to be the “now” stage years later. After reading about their story and know what they’ve been through.
I will be purchasing this book and adding it to my collection on my bookshelves.

This is the first time I have cried this much while reading a book lately. I grew up woth family and friends who suffered from addiction, and this book explains the feelings of those affected by it to a T. The slow burn love story and that twist had my heart twisting as well.

Tee is trying to learn to be strong for herself and come into her feelings and self worth, all while dealing with loss, addiction, and love.

Cal is her best friends brother, now on the outside of the friend triangle they once had together. When he goes off to college, an accident changes everything. Not only for him, but Tee as well.

The rollercoaster of emotions will keep the pages turning.

Author Jeri Marie has a way with words. Her prose is descriptive, and yet poetic at times without being over the top. This story of a friends to lovers romance flows beautifully and I absolutely loved it from start to finish. I am not usually a fan of romance but the author does such a wonderful job that it makes it hard to put down. The book deals with romance, tragedy, and issues related to addiction. This book is a great read for anyone teen to adult. It does have sone spicy scenes, but nothing over the top. I highly recommend this book and give it a firm 5 star rating.

What a cliffhanger! A sweet story that leaves you wanting more and hoping the next book is ready soon! The life Tierney lives isn't unlike some of the students I've worked with, and to hear her anguish and anxiety it tugged at my heartstrings for her struggles. There is friendship, romance, drug use, overdose, injury, and so much more wrapped up in this book. Can't wait to see where their story goes after seeing each other again almost 10 years later.

This book was one of those books that takes you through every emotion! Callum and Tierney’s story was one that was riveting, and their chemistry felt so genuine. The author did a beautiful job of covering difficult and heavy topics with tact and grace. This friends-to-lovers story was such a different take and the authors writing style was so unique. The cliffhanger is a doozy but, that just means the next book is on my TBR!

Jeri certainly knows how to make me feel and cry with every single thing she writes…

I read the original on Wattpad and then again for the published-version ARC (can you guess that I love her books?).

If you’re ready to have your heartstrings pulled, touch upon real-life tough situations (read the trigger warnings), and just fall deeply in love with the characters and the story, then “Essence” is the book for you!

I’m screaming. I’m kicking. I’m throwing shit. All in my brain but still.

Essence… God bless. This story is so beautifully told and well written and the way my heart was beating in my chest so erratically at the end. I wanted to jump into this book and hug Tierney so badly the entire way through. And the end… I need the second book like I need a trip to Starbucks; always and immediately.

I loved this book. Thoroughly and wholly.

I picked up and read this book as I saw the second book resilience all ove TikTok and it sounded right up my alley

I loved the plot growth and development, this book was all about ‘going back in time’ (the past) to set the stage for the second book which in terms of timing was happening now.

There are some heavy topics and content within these books so read the trigger warnings list, authors note and take care of your mental health first.

Ok one does finish on a heck of a cliff hanger (I was glad I could get straight in too book two)

Though mostly framed as a love story between Tierney and Callen, there is so much more to Essence than meets the eye.

The best way to truly feel the magic of this book is to read it for yourself. And what a marvelous read it is, now up there with my favorite realistic fiction stories of all time.

After growing apart from her childhood best friend, Tierney has no idea what happened. She had been friend with Jamie and Callen for years! And one day Callen started pushing Tierney away. Jamie was still there for Tierney and she was happy about that. Just confused on Callen.

Years after he pushed her away, her father passed away from a tragic accident and she started leaning on Callen again. Now what will happen.

Man this book pulled at my heart strings. The story between these two was amazing. I definitely need more of these two and their interactions. The way this book went between both POVs was perfect. It truly helped the character development and the backstory of them. Must Read !

This story is almost too real. It's sweet, and painful, and heartbreaking. But it's also so very well told that I didn't want to put it down until the last page. I imagine the continuation is going to be more of the same. I'll be hoping for a hea that helps soothe the hard parts because isn't that what we all hope for no matter how hard our story may be?

Amazing!!

Such a beautiful story!!! I fell in love with the characters!! It is a rollarcoaster of emotions but so worth the read!!! It is the story of Tee whose dad dies because of addiction. Callen her best friends brother is in love with her! They realize it but during a football game he gets injured. Where he gets addicted to pain pills. Will this be their ending? I can’t wait for book 2!! A must read!!!

Okay

I was enjoying it then things lulled. And it was very obvious from early on where things were headed (I didn't read the blurb so went in blind). But I'll read book 2 and hope my interest is piqued once more.

This book absolutely shattered my heart 💔 I love the MFC so much. I loved seeing her character develop and grow. You get to see both sides of addiction and what it can do to the person and also how it effects those close to you. I can’t wait to see where this next chapter in the main characters lives takes them in book two! Hoping for a happy ending

I received an ARC for my honest review.

Essence was a beautiful story of how the choices we make have the power to affect those around us. Tiernays fathers choices follow her throughout the years. Callens choices negatively impact not only his life but those around him as well. The book ends on a cliffhanger with so much potential to delve into a future for Callen and Tiernay. I devoured this book in a few hours and can not wait to read book 2 and see how the author ties the past to the present.
