Yes, I came across an ugh, ugh, well an okay book. Today’s book of the week left me wondering why I read this book. I feel like I didn’t get the intensity that I wanted from it. It was just a basic book to me. The book on my mind is Nookie by Anieshea Dansby.

The book is centered around one troubled teenager name Joy, funny because I don’t see her having any. Did the author do that on purpose? Whoa. who hangs on to one the wrong men except Kevin and sometimes the wrong friends. Her family is not any better as they come with their own set of problems especially her mom. You find out she has moved and you are also introduced to the first man Josh. She had to leave Josh because she moved with her parents but as you read you find out there was no love lost when it came to Josh.

Right after that you meet Kevin who I seriously would have dated if he ever came into my existence. Wait…he did Corwin. Kevin to me was the only guy who treated her good but see Kevin was a simple guy who didn’t really encounter no drama and it really followed Joy everywhere that she went. But like any good thing Joy learned more about being with this man and decided that she wasn’t having any of that and then she moved on.

She ends up calling her friend Tanya and moving in with her and her boyfriend and that was a disaster waiting to happen. Even I saw that coming ten pages away. I feel like when she figured out the truth about her family she just jumped from one man to the other. She wasn’t really looking for love in my eyes she was looking for materialistic things and she didn’t care whose man it was. Through the eyes of a teenager.

I felt like that was the trail of this entire story and it just didn’t excite me as much as I thought it would be. I mean the title was freaking awesome and I really thought I was going to read about a woman who has got her life together and doesn’t want a man except for one thing and was just exuding this confidence of who she was. Not the case ladies and gent. I just saw a pattern and there was no excitement for me sorry there just wasn’t. This book has a second book after it and I want to read it then again, I don’t. I don’t know. See you guys next Tuesday I’m out

Eighteen year old Joy Williams has a lot to deal with. Her family relocated to Philly and she's struggling with adjusting to her new high school. But what she misses the most is her boyfriend Joshua. Josh was her foundation and she relied on him heavily to block out her problems at home. Joy's mother, Deborah, is mentally ill and her father, Michael works long hours in an effort to avoid his emotionally imbalanced wife.

After one of her motherís episodes Joy attempts to reach out to Josh back in Brooklyn. But when his phone is answered by another woman Joy is forced to re-evaluate her relationship with Josh. Enters Kevin Jacobs into Joy's life and after being showered with real love and affection Joy finally realizes that Josh never truly loved her. Never being showed affection from either of her parents led Joy to mistake Joshís abusive tendencies for love.

Fearful of losing control over Joy, Josh comes to Philly in an attempt to reclaim her. Joy is caught up in a violent confrontation between both men that eventually leads to death for one and incarceration for the other. The heartache for Joy doesnít end there because her motherís instability eventually leads to the death of both of her parents. Turning Joy into a homeless, high school drop out.

With no one left to turn to how will Joy survive? Will she be forced to use Nookie to get ahead? Author Anieshea Dansby's Nookie explores just how much a naÔve teenager endure before transforming into a cold manipulator.

What did you like about the book?
I enjoyed the author's creativity in conjuring up a fresh storyline in regards to Joyís home life. Instead of the typical drug addicted or poor parents Ms. Dansby went against the norm with her venture into Deborah Williamsí mental illness.

What did you dislike about the book?
The book's main character Joy never experienced any personal growth. With all the dilemmas she faced she never learned from previous situations and continually made bad choices. Making her transformation into her cold-hearted personality totally unbelievable.

What could the author do to improve the book?
In the next installment (Ill Na Na) Joy's character needs to evolve into someone readers will enjoy rooting for. Definitely not the schemer she had turned into by the end of Nookie.

Nookie tells the story of Joy, an 18-year-old high school senior who finds herself in a new school in a new town. Amidst this change in venue, she finds that some things have remained the same such as her parents’ constant bickering and neglect. Furthermore, she finds out that her boyfriend of four years has already begun seeing another girl behind her back. Meanwhile, she meets a kindly photographer named Kevin whom she meets when she runs away from one of her parents’ violent arguments. And this is only the beginning. Unfortunately, there is not much more to this story about Joy and the struggles of her life with inattentive and dysfunctional parents. Author Anieshea Dansby does not provide enough of a story here to make the reader care about Joy or anyone else in this book that is sorely lacking in plot. The editing mistakes at least give the reader something to do while reading this story. Otherwise, Nookie is utterly uninteresting and appears to have no point beyond a few explicit sex scenes. Perhaps the strictest devotee to urban or street lit may find something redeeming in this story. However, those who have higher expectations in their reading materials will be sorely disappointed.

The theme of this novel is for 'young adults,' which made it somewhat difficult for me to get into, and the fact that the novel contain a lot of errors. A full review will be posted on my blog and Goodreads.

Update, Oct.4,2013:

As I promised to follow through with a complete overall review of "Nookie"

I really don't like giving low ratings on books I read, or critiquing other authors work, but just because I don't like doesn't mean I won't. --And yes I used the word 'won't.' I think this book has the potential to be greater than what it is, and what it is is underdeveloped! I found that the characters was underdeveloped, chapter development underdeveloped, sub-plots okay, tension predicable, lack editing, and sentence structure.

I'm not trying to be curl, and I hope the author doesn't take offense in this review. I received reviews such as this and sort to improve my craft, and my work. Again I think the book has potential and needs some polishing.

WOW is all I can say. All it took was for one traumatizing experience and now Joy is all over the place. Sadly, that's usually how it happens. SMH. Getting ready to start Nookie's secret.
