“A powerful new voice on the crime-fiction scene” (ForeWord Reviews), Corey Lynn Fayman has made a career of avoiding the sunlight in his hometown of San Diego, California, where he’s done hard time as a keyboard player for local bands, a sound designer for the world-famous Old Globe Theatre, and an interactive designer for organizations both corporate and sundry. Armed with a B.A. in Creative Writing from UCLA and an M.A. in Educational Technology from SDSU, he’s also taught technology and design courses at various colleges and universities in Southern California.
Fayman's adventures working for the infamous Internet startup MP3.com led him to conceive the character of Rolly Waters, the guitar-playing detective first featured in the San Diego Book Awards nominated mystery, Black’s Beach Shuffle. Encouraged by this early success, he set about writing a second Rolly Waters Mystery, Border Field Blues, winner of the Genre Award at the 2013 Hollywood Book Festival. Desert City Diva, the third novel in the series, was a bronze award winner in the 2015 Indiefab Book of the Year Awards. The latest in the series, Ballast Point Breakdown, was awarded the best-in-show Geisel Award at the 2021 San Diego Book Awards.
Meet Rolly Waters, recovering alcoholic, musician, and part-time private eye. Or is it private eye and part-time musician? Depends on the day of the week.
The daughter of an old music-industry acquaintance hires Rolly to find a guitar once owned by her late father. The case seems simple enough. Locate the guitar, prove its provenance and, hopefully, return it to his client.
But nothing is simple when the guitar in question was once owned by the late, great Jimi Hendrix.
A guitar once simply played by Hendrix could be worth a small fortune, and Rolly finds himself drawn back into the smarmy depths of San Diego’s recording industry, a business fueled with drugs, alcohol, and greed. To find the Hendrix guitar, Rolly must face Russian mobsters, a corrupt music producer, and a mysterious group identified only by its initials.
Gillespie Field Groove is the fifth entry in the Rolly Waters mystery series written by award-winning author Corey Lynn Fayman. His well-written story is taught and suspenseful, and at times humorous, with a plot that leaves the reader guessing until its final, surprising conclusion. Fayman, himself a veteran of the music industry, also provides the reader with a back-stage view of the music industry few have seen. A good book to spend time with for both readers and music lovers alike.
I received an advance review copy for free am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you Corey Fayman and Partners In Crime Tours. I'm excited to be a part of this tour.
Gillespie Field is the fifth book in the Rolly Waters mystery series. In this installment an obscure rock and roll roadie dies under mysterious circumstances. His prized Jimi Hendirx guitar has gone missing. Can Rolly save his new client from the ruthless collectors looking for it?
Lucinda Rhodes hires guitar-playing private detective Rolly to track down a Stratocaster guitar owned by her deceased father. Rolly is thrilled to take her case, especially when he learned the original owner may have been Jimi Hendrix. Gerry Rhode’s reckless personal history leads to more questions than answers. A shooting incident 40 years ago reveals a surprising connection to a pop star’s hit record. With an aging impresario, Gerry’s trophy wife, a Russian gangster, and the FBI involved can Rolly and Lucinda survive with their lives?
This book is well written and immediately drew me in. I found myself immediately immersed in the story and adventure. The writing is well-paced and descriptive, leaving the reader to be a fly on the wall. I felt like I was living the story as it played out. The characters are eclectic while completely realistic and human. Rolly’s being a recovering alcoholic added depth to his character. I love that he comes off as touch but really is a teddy bear inside.
The music woven throughout the story adds a dynamic subplot, which I enjoyed because I am a huge fan of King Crimson. California is the perfect setting for this book! Full of twists and turns you won’t see coming, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a new mystery series.
This is a good novel for musicians, especially those playing guitar. The hero, a private investigator, was a guitar player in a band and still does some gigs. Since he is hired to find a particular guitar, there is quite a bit about it and others. The investigation moves along at a decent pace. We learn a bit about musicians and songwriters along the way. There is even a Russian mobster thrown in. I am not a music aficionado so for me the best part of the novel was the surprise ending. More power to them!
I appreciated this entertaining and informative novel and liked Rolly as an investigative hero. I will be watching for his next adventure.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.
A missing jimi Hendricks Guitar./ A murder. Gives Rolly a new case. Lots of missing pieces to fit together. Finding the information leads him on a wild ride. But working for the daughter of the Deceased. Well Rolly has definitely got his hands has full.
This Book is definitely full of mystery and crime. Will keep your interest because you just gotta know. We're the missing 🎸 is and we'll so much more.
I personally like Rolly. I also like his mom. I thought she was cool. The things she wanted to do for him.. it was just a good book. Loved all the rock and roll history.
A guitar player turned private detective. A nurse who flies a plane. A dead roadie with secrets. Jimi Hendrix. A tone deaf trophy bride. A Russian gangster. An Orthodox church. How in the world could all of these elements possibly be connected without feeling completely implausible? Well, Corey Lynn Fayman has skillfully done so in his intriguing new mystery, Gillespie Field Groove – a story that will keep you on your toes with its unpredictable twists and one that will have you cheering for justice served in unexpected ways.
Rolly is an intriguing character – this guitarist & recovering alcoholic who is now a private investigator. The case he’s given by nurse Lucinda, thanks to a serendipitous emergency room visit, seems like the perfect mystery for his connections and background. Lucinda’s recently deceased father has left her a guitar formerly owned by Jimi Hendrix, but it’s nowhere to be found. What Rolly uncovers in the search takes him deeper into the underbelly of the music industry than he anticipated, exposing a long list of sins and scars. I thought the glimpse backstage, so to speak, was well-written and gave the book an atmospheric vibe. I felt like I was in that alley… on that stage… hearing that song, etc. The writing voice fit the mood and immediately drew me in to the story, though I would have enjoyed it even more had it not been quite so moderately populated with vulgar and profane language that exceeded my own personal comfort levels.
Bottom Line: Gillespie Field Groove by Corey Lynn Fayman takes several seemingly-incompatible elements and gives us an intriguing mystery with layers that peel back one at a time until all is revealed. The style is easygoing and laid back but read quickly at the same time, and I found the overall concept of the mystery to be fresh & unique. I liked Rolly’s character and the fact that it never felt as though I was arriving late to the series, even though that is exactly what I have done. The way it ended bodes interesting for future books and will leave readers satisfied with the comeuppance that is delivered.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Followers of my reviews (which typically feature books with zero to mild amounts of foul language) may want to be aware that there is a moderate amount of stronger cursing, crude terms, and profanities in this novel.
I received a gifted copy and am providing a review. This was my first introduction to Rolly Waters. Rolly is a private eye and a sometimes musician, so his current PI gig is quite interesting - that of locating a missing Stratocaster guitar. Rolly is a persistent PI in that he will follow the clues he finds and if one direction doesn’t pan out, he takes off in another. He came upon this missing guitar case through Lucinda, a nurse he encountered when he was in the ER a couple years ago. While working this case, Rolly runs into Roger Sledge who is a big name in the music business. He also isn’t what one would call an upstanding citizen. Mr. Sledge also has a history with Ruby Dean. Ruby Dean and Lange Campbell. Both of these ladies are tied to the past and the present. Two seemingly quiet characters. Dmitri and his niece, Svetlana. They both add certain dynamics to this tale which also help round the story out. Moogus. He is another quiet background character. I just like his name - Moogus. Otis and Mavis. Otis is the tie to the past; Mavis, his sister, is the tie to the present. Otis and Gerry. Again, Otis is the tie to the past, and Gerry is the tie to the present. Rolly also has some intertwining connections to some of the background characters he encounters along the way, which only adds another layer to this tale, mixing the past with the present. The interesting thing is how this particular crime happened and who the real whodunit turned out to be. I enjoyed the way the past in this story was tied to the present and how Rolly was able to piece everything together. I also enjoyed the way this book ended … that was a total surprise, along with a deeper meaning. It will be interesting to see what Rolly gets into next.
Gillespie Field Grove by Corey Fayman is the fifth book in the Rolly Waters mystery series. Rolly is a musician, guitar player, and private investigator. He is hired by the daughter of an old acquaintance to find part of her inheritance, a guitar that may have been played by Jimi Hendrix.
In his quest to find the missing guitar, he comes in contact with a Russian gangster, his wife who is really just a trophy wife who thinks that she can sing. The daughter of his friend is a nurse, Lucinda, who also flies planes. While investigating Rolly finds that Lucinda's father Gerry Rhodes may have been murdered and his death was no accident.
Rolly finds that not all is what it appears as he navigates the music world's underbelly. The Russian mob has a big stake in the guitar also so Rolly needs to walk carefully in his approach to finding the guitar.
This is the first book that I have read in the series, a quick read for sure. Great introductions to the characters of which there are many. The story takes a few turns and twists as any good mystery should.
I enjoyed reading this story, very nostalgic as to the time that is mentioned in the first chapter was of course, Woodstock. A time of freedom and good music. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I give the book 5 stars
I was given a copy of the book for review purposes only.
In chapter 1, it seemed that we were transporting back to the past in memories of the old Woodstock days. The old was taking one last stroll down memory lane before taking his final breath.
Days later, his daughter, Lucy, requests the assistance of P.I. Rolly to help find an old guitar that might have belonged to Jimi Hendrix. Was it true that anything he might’ve touched would’ve been worth a lot of money? But that wasn’t the most interesting part. The interesting part was that the police thought the old man might’ve been murdered. Now, it had my attention. You’d think that, at this point, Rolly would dig right into the murder. Instead, he goes trolling around old music shops looking for that missing guitar. The character was clearly familiar with the music industry, which was rather fascinating, but, to me, it wasn’t the main focus. I wanted to get into the murder right away.
The narrative was nice and simple with some witty commentary. To be honest, the mystery of the missing guitar was rather appealing but not overly enticing to me. I’m not really a fan of Hendrix or really any of the old music from the time. This would definitely be a good read for those music buffs.
It’s official. Rolly Waters is my new favorite PI and Corey Lynn Fayman the latest author whose books I’m binge-reading. They make a dynamite team!
Gillespie Field Groove pulled me in from the first page and kept me entangled with the story and characters until the last word was read. Fayman’s writing is smart, exciting, well-paced, and just descriptive enough. His characters are colorful, intriguing although sometimes repulsive, and paired with great dialog. The best among them, though, is Rolly Waters, the damaged-guy-in-recovery who’s tough and soft at the same time.
The music that pervades the story adds a wonderful dimension, especially for readers who know the artists and tunes described in the plot. (I confess, I cranked up some King Crimson after reading this!) That, paired with the California location, put me in mind of a mash-up between Robert Crais’ Elvis Cole and Ace Atkins Nick Travers mysteries, which is not a bad place to be!
I’ll be recommending this book and the author to anyone looking for a new mystery/suspense series. Well done!
A unique and exciting mystery novel that blends music, history, and suspense. The story follows private detective Rolly Waters as he investigates the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of an obscure rock'n'roll roadie and the disappearance of a prized Jimi Hendrix guitar. The characters are well-drawn, and the plot is full of unexpected twists and turns. The author's love of music shines through in every page, and the historical details add depth and authenticity to the story. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves music and mysteries, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a thrilling and engaging read.
Lucinda was the daughter of an audio technician and roadie who worked with the likes of Jimi Hendrix in the seventies, and he had the related expected lifestyle damages.
Lucinda herself was a nurse.
A pie in the sky rate collector item inheritance might be headed to Lucy - or it might be just dust in the wind.
Private detective and musician Rolly Waters takes on the case of trying to locate the missing inheritance, and a wild and crazy hunt ensues.
Russian mobsters, a medley of famous musicians and a bunch of folks who were used or abused by elements related to the music industry are tangled up in this crazy treasure hunt and whodunnit
My new favorite author. A private investigator who plays guitar in a band and knows his guitars. Well you had me at plays in a band. A nurse who had cared for him while he was in hospital recovering from a fatal automobile accident calls him about investigating a rare guitar her father supposedly left for her before his sudden death or was it murder? This had me from the beginning and now I'm going to go and read all of the books from Mr. Fayman. BTW my Autocorrect tried to change Fayman to Fatman lol! I know he'll appreciate that since his sense of humor shows thru his writing. All I can say is I'm looking forward to more Corey Fayman writing.

Rolly Waters is a private detective who loves the classics, Hendrix, and more. Lucinda just wants to find her father's prized possession, a guitar rumored to be from Jim hendrix himself. She enlists the help of Waters, and he starts to unravel a greater conspiracy more deadly than the two had ever counted on. This mystery was a good book. There was plenty going on and plenty of twists and unexpected turns. The multitude of characters that interact with Waters and Lucinda, make it hard attires to keep track of what and who, but o erallthis was an engrossing story.

Lucinda Rhodes hired Rolly Waters, PI, to help find a guitar that belonged to her father that he left her when he died. It was a guitar that was worth a lot of money because it was once played by the great Jimi Hendricks. Rolly also being a guitar player was very interested in the case. Looking for the guitar, he opened a whole lot of other investigations into corruption and crimes. A great book.
This book moved very fast and every page was exciting. Plenty of dialogue you absolutely love the characters and you were rooting for the good guy throughout the whole story. I feel like Corey Lynn Fayman manages to not overdo anything in this book, he gives the readers just enough to have them hanging on his every word. Nice easy reading with a perfect mystery and a great story you will keep wanting more. I received a copy via RABT Book Tours & PR in exchange for an honest review.
Very good read! Kept me entertained and was hard to put down. The main character's, Rolly Waters, background makes him fascinating and someone to root for. Many of the other characters in the novel were engaging and felt authentic. The plot was riveting, with many twists and turns. I even learned a bit about the music industry, guitars in particular. There was even some humor sprinkled throughout and I loved the ending.
If you love music, are fond of guitar players, and like a good mystery, this series is for you.
I stumbled upon it accidently and after I read my first in this series, I had to read search out and read the rest. This is a wonderful series with a really likeable, sort of a lovable semi-loser, guitar-playing private eye who stumbles into situations that are much deeper than first seemed.
Corey Lynn Fayman: PLEASE KEEP WRITING THIS SERIES!!!!!!!
I just came off of reading an old and absolutely terrible book to this gem of a find, which I only put down when I could no longer get my eyes to focus! The author did not disappoint providing lots of detail to completely captivate the reader. Mystery, Intrigue, a fast-paced read full of clues and mis-directions in the search.
When private detective Rolly Waters was hired to track down a missing guitar, possibly owned by Jimi Hendrix, he is taken down a rollicking mysterious path. This novel is filled with interesting characters, plot twists and turns. It’s a fun page-turning read that I highly recommend and I look forward to perusing another Rolly Waters mystery soon.
Another great Corey Lynn Fayman read. Came across the Rolly Waters series from my husband. We don’t always like the same reading material, but I was thoroughly captivated from book 1. Great characters and interesting stories. Hope there’s more to come. I have just one book left in the series.

Set in San Diego, the plot centers around a guitar that might have been played by Jimi Hendricks and the bad guys that have it. The story mixes Rolly’s investigation skills and his musical knowledge in interesting ways. A great read.
Characters continue to intrigue, the guitar collector’s meet Russian Mobsters plot is inventive, local San Diego area setting authentic. Men ( some ) being arrogant harassing assholes is given exposure of its existence overtime. Perfect package and the best one yet imho
A well plotted, gripping, and original story that mixes thriller and music. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it kept me turning pages. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
