Modern day werewolf laird Ian MacNeill reluctantly allows a film production company to use his castle, but he knows his secretive clan has a big problem when a beautiful red werewolf female who insists she's working on the film keeps showing up in the wrong places.
And a matter of pleasure...
Julia Wildthorn is not who she says she is-she's sneaking into Argent Castle to steal an ancient relic for her grandfather and to do research for her next werewolf romance novel. When she catches a glimpse of Ian, she realizes he's the perfect hero.
Love, love, love romance, the paranormal, hunky Highlanders with their delicious brogue and hot kilts, so Terry Spear writes about those hunky Highlanders both in medieval times and as wolves in contemporary times. Jaguar shifters too! And young adult urban fantasy. And romantic suspense.
She grew up reading mystery, adventure, mythologies from around the world, ghost stories, the paranormal, fell in love with Dracula and Wolfman, and felt they needed loving too. Everyone should have someone to love. Which means her stories always have a HEA.

Heart of a Highland Wolf is book seven in the Heart of the Wolf series by Terry Spear. It can be read as a stand a lone.
This novel is full of mystery, suspense, adventure, romance, and sexy Scotsmen.
The story is so vivid and detailed that I felt like I was in Scotland right along with the characters. All the characters are intriguing, interesting, and have strong family ties. I loved all the Scotsmen that are introduced. Who doesn’t love a sexy man in a kilt? The story moves along at a nice pace, the romance is sweet, and the mystery/suspense was enjoyable.
I think the best thing about this series is that you can pick up any of the books and just go. You don’t have to read them in order to understand the world and characters.
Heart of the Highland Wolf was such a fun story to read. I love Ms. Spear’s Highland wolfs.
I had high expectations for this book - highlanders plus werewolves equals win! This is the first book I've read by Terry Spears. Even though Heart of a Highland Wolf is the 7th book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone.
Julia is travelling with her friend Maria under the guise of being part of the movie crew. In reality, Julia is a romance writer who writes about Highland wolves. She's been tasked by her grandfather with finding a box that is stashed away in the McNeill castle. Laird Ian McNeill isn't thrilled with the idea of giving permission to have a movie be filmed at his castle but he is left with little choice if he wants to save his family's castle.
Ian and Julia are instantly attracted to each other. Ian quickly figures out that Julia is lupus garous and vice versa. Other than both being lupus garous, I couldn't understand why Ian and Julia felt drawn to each other. Ian constantly caught Julia in lies and sneaking around his castle and yet he continued to ignore the lies or forgive her. I don't think Julia ever apologized or felt guilty about her duplicitous behavior and that bothered me especially when her lying was putting her friend, Maria, in an awkward spot with her job and the McNeills.
Heart of a Highland Wolf was an ok read for me. I loved Ian and the secondary characters. I had a serious problem with Julia. I felt that she felt no remorse for her actions. She acted without thought to any repercussions. I didn't buy the romance between Ian and Julia. How Ian could fall in love with someone would constantly lied to his face and went behind his back is beyond me. Of course, her motives are revealed but there was no big climax. Ian was a little too accepting of the words that came out of Julia's mouth.
All in all, I was disappointed by this story. My issues with Julia's deception and the quick romance with no build up prevented me from enjoying Heart of a Highland Wolf as much as I wanted to.
The premise of the book left me somewhat confused because what the blurb in back says doesn’t match up to what the book is really about. Julia Wildthorn is a Lupus Garous-a werewolf and a romance writer. She comes over to Scotland from America with her friend’s movie production company hiding herself as part of the production crew. Her cover story to her friend is that she wants to write her next romance book about Scottish werewolves. But that’s not her only reason. Her grandfather has told her she needs to break into the castle they are filming at and “steal” back something that belongs to their family. Her grandfather won’t tell her what it is or how it came to be in a Scottish castle-only that her family needs her to find it.
Ian MacNeill is also Lupus Garous and is furious that he has to allow the “invaders” into his castle in order to replenish his clans bank account. From the minute he laid eyes on Julia, he wants her. But once he finds out she is a werewolf, he knows they can have no future. Lupus Garous mate for life and sex seals the deal. Plus, Ian has enough on his plate with the pushy movie people, his clan wanting to be extras in the movie, and an enemy from the past who is determined to Ian to rest for good.
This is my first time reading Terry Spear. Unfortunately I was not able to get a good feel for the storyline in here. It felt very disorganized and rushed. Crammed full of information that didn’t flow well together. I felt like the story couldn’t decide it it wanted to be funny or serious. Julia is trying to jump start her writing career but the main plot of the book is her finding out what her grandfathers big secret is. You don’t even really see her writing about Ian and his family in particular.
I had a very hard time connecting to Julia. She did not flesh out well. Her secretive nature felt dishonest and I could not reconcile myself with her breaking and entering someone’s home based on what little her grandfather tells her. He says just do it and she does it. I didn’t get a sense of the Alpha “you must do what I say” from her family’s dynamics so that surprised me right off the bat. I was also amazed at how bent out of shape she gets when Ian confronts her about her duplicity. It was if the lying really didn’t really bother her.
Ian worked a little better for me. He was more three dimensional and the interactions between him and his brothers offered some lividly and substance to the story. He worries for his clan since he took a risky financial deal and lost all their money. He’s very alpha but shows a considerate side. I enjoyed meeting members of his family.
Julia and Ian’s romance was not a romance at all. It was sex. I expected the main conflict would slowly deepen the attraction between them and offer up a steamy love affair fraught with contractions and strife. That didn’t happen. It was basically he kept finding her in his home and decided if he had sex with her it would get him out of her system.
Towards the end Ian talks about his love for her and how much he admires and respects her. Really? Why? She has done nothing worthwhile in the story. She sneaks around continuously trying to find the “secret” for her grandfather and has sex with Ian. That’s all she does.
Our villain was rather sublime and didn’t make an impacting appearance till the end. Of course, the ending is pat, anti climatic, and the secret Julia finds out about doesn’t even begin to justify her lying and sneaking around.
A nice addition to the series. This series is on the lighter side without being intentionally humorous. But there is no end of the world, no evil magic etc. I enjoy the wolf culture in these books. It doesn't dominate the stories, but it's definitely there. Mostly this story is about two people meeting and falling in love. There are plenty of interesting secondary characters. The plot was nice except the ending mystery was a bit weak but I wasn't reading it for the mystery. There was a hot highland laird who was also a wolf and a wolf woman who writes werewolf romances for a living. A nice way to spend a couple of hours.
Julia, even though a werewolf romance author, has come to Scotland with more than one intention. Julia, has been charged by her grandfather to find a artifact that is hidden within the castle. Even with a hidden agenda, Julia can't resist the magic of the scenery surrounding her, or how much Laird Ian Macneill makes her feel alive, both her human side and her wolf. However Ian is totall Alpha, leader of his people and his den, and doesn't like not being in control. Ian has had to be a leader for quite some time, and even though he hates strangers, and having a movie being produced at his home, is even more loathesome. However, Julia intrigues him, and his wolf only wants to get to know the little red even more. What he doesn't expect is to find Julia as his Mate...Heart Of The Highland Wolf is the seventh in the series. I have just loved each and every book that I have read from this author. When I found this one at the library, and saw that not only did it have werewolf shifter, but was mixed in with a scottish highlands theme, I definitely could hardly wait to read it. I have to say I didn't know when I started reading it how much I would like it....but I LOVED it!! Its by far my favorite book of the series. It was such a witty and engaging story, one that keeps the reader on their toes. There was one surprise after another and I felt myself feeling like laughing almost constantly. I loved both Ian and Julia. Ian is very alpha, commanding and domineering, the kind that is the 'he man' type. Which I found so amusing at times. Julia is feisty, stubborn and very headstrong. I found that together they created some heated chemistry. Overall a delightful and very engaging read that had me reading as fast as I could. I truly enjoyed the way this author mixed together a contemporary romance, with paranormal elements as well as some scottish highland culture mixed right in that made for the perfect balance for a outstanding read!!! It has to be one of the best werewolf romances I have had the pleasure of reading. One you don't want to miss out on reading!!! (plus who could resist such a beautiful cover...deliciousness) A ADVENTUROUS RIDE OF ACTION, MYSTERY AND ROMANCE!!!
This story is wonderful blend of contemporary suspense; romance, with just the right mix of paranormal. Terry has a wonderful sense of humor and you can’t help but laugh out loud at some of the situations. The cast of characters is well-drawn and distinct with strong family ties with Ms. Spear’s trademark pack dynamics.
What I love about Terry Spear’s series, especially in this particular story, is this isn’t fantasy. It’s set in the real world and crafted in such a way you feel there could actually be werewolves hiding in plain sight.
Terry sets it in the Highlands (yay!) and combines a touch history (how can you not?), a secluded castle, a ghost, a family feud going back generations, a hidden betrothal contract, and a villain who’s determined to take what he sees as his right, Julia Wildthorn. One tough and mouthwatering Scot Laird (Ian) who has already determined that Julia is all his and said villain will take her his dead body. Believe me, Sutherland tries.
Did I mention there is not just one sexy Highland wolf, but four of them! None of them are quite prepared for two independent and unprotected female (what is wrong with their pack leaders anyway?) American werewolves in Scotland, especially one who writes (gasp) werewolf romances.
This is such a fun story to read. I love that Terry has set this and the next one in Scotland (I’m hoping a story for each brother).
Let me go on record and say, Terry Spear just gets better and better.
Terry Spear's sexy Highland wolves can bite me any time.
Okay, first of all I just want to take a moment to relish in the fact that our MC's highlander... is a quadruplet. *sighs*
I love highlander romances and to mix this with shifter romance made it twice the fun. It had a bit of historical references via the film production that wanted in on Ian's lands, and I got a good laugh out of our MC Julia being a romance author... for shifters. lol. So good.
The plot sounded pretty good, but I had a hard time getting into it. She's going there to destroy the paper that would tie her to Ian, but it's hidden, and no one knows about it. Is the risk of bringing it to everyone's attention really worth it? I get that they wanted to get be rid of the thing in case one of Ian's people did know of it, but like... I don't know. It just seemed like it was a bigger deal than it was made out to be, especially when Ian only found out about the contract because she snooped around. Then there's the dialogue, that didn't really hold me unless they were getting sexy.
Overall not a bad book. Probably not for me, because I was tempted to skim through a few things, but I still very much fell for the setting. Anything Scotland and you're already halfway there with me.
I'm not invested in this as a series, and maybe that could've made a difference but the writing left a lot to be desired and the dialogue didn't flow. I'm going to stop now and see if maybe I feel like picking it back up at a later date.
I’ve been a fan of Terry Spear’s werewolves for a long time now. And now she’s added Highland heroes to her repertoire? Highlanders and werewolves. Be still my heart. Needless to say, I’m thrilled!
And this time we also get a hero who’s having financial difficulties, is on the brink of losing the castle that’s been in the family for centuries. Thus, Ian, laird of the MacNeill clan, is doing something he’d never think about otherwise - allowing humans to roam around his den while filming a movie. Not just the fact that humans will be so close to all those shifters, but the chaos he knows will result in him gritting his teeth the whole time.
On top of all that, his enemy is looking for the perfect time to strike AND an American female red wolf has caught his attention when she stalks around the castle against the rules he’s set for the filing crew. Julia isn’t really part of the crew; she’s a romance writer writing what she knows best - werewolves. So it’s a research trip for her, along with a secret rescue and retrieval mission for her grandfather. She has no idea what is contained in the long-hidden box he wants, but if she can get inside the castle, she’ll have a chance of finding it.
But with Ian’s suspicions and her attraction to him, Julia’s plans don’t always go as they should. Ian’s vigilance at keeping at eye on all visitors, as well as his three brothers’ following his orders, and his attraction to her, Julia gets only one chance to find the secret passage to begin her searching, and it doesn’t go well. I like the pull between them that nothing can break, not even Ian’s suspicions. When Julia decides to come clean about her sneaking about, their relationship moves to the next level, trust is established, and their lovemaking is explosive.
I was a little thrown after learning the brothers are quadruplets that they aren’t identical. It’s not until the description of Guthrie comes along (he has red hair instead of the familial black) that I finally got it why there’s no confusion when folks would see them together or not comment that Ian, Duncan, and Cearnach look alike. Not a huge deal, just some confusion for a bit.
What is a bigger deal for me is there’s not as much shifting going on as we usually get in a Terry Spear book, not as much of the running through forests or open wilderness, though there is a little of the forest scenes. That’s what’s always been the highlight for me when reading Ms. Spear’s shifters, lots of shifting and lots of wolves running everywhere. It’s just something she does so very well, and I certainly miss that in this story.
These new characters are charming and fun. The storyline isn’t quite as mysterious or dangerous as in previous books, though the battle scenes late in the story, broadswords swinging, are done very well. All in all, still a great read from Ms. Spear, and I’m looking forward to future additions to the series.
(4.5stars) What could be better than an alpha wolf hero? An alpha wolf hero in a kilt - and, even though this is a contemporary, we get multiple hunky 'weres' in kilts. Yum.
I am a shifter fan so I've read all of Spear's werewolf romances, but Heart of the Highland Wolf is my absolute favorite. I like the way that Spear cleverly sets the romance amid a historical movie being filmed at a Scottish castle, so that there are some historical elements mixed in with the contemporary.
A good part of what made the story for me though, is that all of the characters in Heart of the Highland Wolf are wonderful. I really loved the romantic-at-heart Julia, she's an author who is a werewolf and she writes werewolf romances. Throughout the story Julia takes inspiration from what is going on around her and writes these romantic sexy scenes in her head. And the way that Julia's musings weave into the action make the book that much more romantic and sexy. Her reluctant hero Ian is good too, he tries to use his head but finds himself breaking his own rules since Julia 'gets' to him at a primal level. I also liked Julia's fiery friend Maria who is also a wolf and I hope to see more of her. But of course I can't forget Ian's brothers - he's a quad. In Duncan, Guthrie and Cearnach, author Spear manages three completely different personalities, all of them appealing and I want their books now.
Happily it looks like I'll get my wish. I emailed Spear, and Duncan's story, The Highland Wolf in Paradise is already written. Can't wait. Kilts + werewolves = extra awesome combination.
In this installment, we meet Julia Wildthorn, the werewolf romance writer who was mentioned numerous times in the previous books. Well, it turns out she's a werewolf herself and she's in Scotland trying to find inspiration for her next book and she tagged along with her friend who's part of a film crew using a Scottish castle.
And guess what? The Laird just happens to be the alpha of a Highland werewolf pack! There's nothing better than a Highlander story and adding in the werewolf element? Yum! Ian MacNeill even has 3 other brothers!
It turns out that Julia's background is a bit more interesting than she knew and there's history with the MacNeill pack and MacNeill's century-long enemy, the Sutherlands. So, there's a bit of a mystery there and some action scenes where they turned the mock-battle movie scenes into real fights between the clans.
All in all, not a bad read, even though I would have liked more time spent on the mystery part of the book, as it felt a bit rush at the end. I'm looking forward to the other brothers' stories.
After reading her last three books in this series, I had serious high hopes for this book but unfortunately I was let down again. Now come on, highlanders and werewolves, oh yes please! BUT unfortunately not.
I found this book actually pretty corny and full of cover up. Things happened so quickly without any major details and a box stashed away in this supposed highlander castle.. yeahhh..
Had the rogue-ishness of highlanders in Scottland mixed with the amazing TS shifters!
I didn't much like the movie part, but I overlooked it. It brought back memories of being an extra and sitting around doing nothing for long periods & there was no mention of this movie other than the film crew was at the castle & they needed extras...
This paranormal romance had a good premise, a nice sense of clan family and I liked how the relationship developed. The action was okay for the most part but the final conflict was so unbelievable and damaged the hero's credibility. Werewolf Julie accompanies her friend who is working on a movie set in Scotland at the castle of Laird Ian and his wolf pack.
Ian just doesn't care who knows about certain things, “oh, right, and it’s not like you’re subtle about it, Ian. I mean, everyone here today knows just where you’re taking me.” His mouth curved up marginally..." I liked this book, I loved Ian he kept me entertained.
The mystery of what Julia was looking for kept me reading to the end - and I'm sure lovers of lust-at-first-sight romances with a lot of explicit scenes would enjoy this, but it just isn't my thing.
I'm not interested in the explicit scenes and I scoff at lust portrayed as love. Romance? I don't think so.
So why did I read it? Because I'm a major fan of werewolves and it was one of the few werewolf stories I had access to at the time. Also because I do like some romance in my stories and have been hoping I'll find a werewolf romance author who meets my rather specific criteria. For me, this isn't it, though I'm sure many others would enjoy it.
This is a new author for me and am I ever glad . Strong female characters and very HOT Highlander males kept me up til late. I just had to finish the book. While the two female characters start off the book, the 4 handsome men take over and lead you thru the castle, down secret tunnels and introduce a ghost. What I really like was the sex scenes , they were tasteful and not too explicit. Just enough to make you feel warm and cosey, just like you are experiencing their love.
Even though she was doing this 4 her dad and grandpa by going 2 the castle she should have found out all the truth b4 hand not after everything went crazy. She needed 2 tell the truth but was afraid of what they would think of her. I loved Finn!! Even though he pd dearly 4 his son's and stupidity and least he helped when it mattered the most 4 his family. Ian may have broke down 2 agree 2 the stupidity of making a movie but at least he was able 2 help with the future with her and his home. That asshole that caused most of all the trouble deserved everything he got coming 2 him!!
I read a later book in this series and really liked it. I am not as happy with the two earlier books I have now read. There is deceit and questionable choices by hero and heroine. The hero is a little too "I can do whatever I want because I am alpha". There was no rape (or similar), but he did confine her against her wishes. There was also a lot of crazy from another pack that was not adequately explained. I'll probably try another eventually, but I may have to give up on the series soon.
It was an interesting read. I liked having the sexy hero financially not perfect and the foxy heroine hard working and not some princess needing rescuing. Wish the author had dwelt more on the werewolf aspect of the story (felt like she just skimmed that area & focused more on the human issues). It was an enjoyable read.
HEART OF THE HIGHLAND WOLF by Terry Spear, book 1 of the Highland Wolves
A thrilling and engaging tale about she-wolf who has the hots for a Scottish laird in the Highland of Scotland, becomes involves in the rivalry between two clans of Scottish warriors, a ghost, a movie battle appears a bit too real.
It was slow, some characters seems to be introduced because she had to show the big clan. In general the story didn't make me feel anything, I read it hoping that finally there will be action after action, some unexpected plot twists because within so many pages there has to be something... This was my first book from this author.
I'm pretty much programmed to adore a Highland romance; add a paranormal aspect, engaging characters (including FOUR braw brothers), a family secret, and an unhinged stalker, and I am blissed out! Julia's and Ian's story is such a satisfying read. Book One in the Highland Wolf series is a passion-filled, thrilling adventure!
It took alot to get me into this books about page two-houndred I started getting into it. I hate starting a book and not finishing it so I kept reading. It does get better as time goes on. You got a love story and mystery and fighting scenes.
A really good read! Great characters and a really good plot. Maybe some pages more could show some of the characters more like Maria or the Grandfather. Anyway a really good read.
This book really intrigued me as soon as I read the description. However for some reason I didn’t love it as much as I expected to. There was something lacking but I’m not exactly sure what it was. However I did enjoy this book quite a bit! Definitely a 4.5 🌟 read!
Strong characters, sexy and hard to put down. Braw Scots, Medieval castle and were-wolves all add to the drama and intriguing allure of this well written novel.
