Swift as Desire
Instead of entering the world crying like other babies, Júbilo was born with a smile on his face. He had a gift for hearing what was in people’s hearts, for listening to sand dunes sing and insects whisper. در این کتاب دیگر آن رئالیسم جادویی جذابی که در کتاب "مثل آب برای شکلات" شاهدش بودیم، نمی‌بینیم. کتاب "مثل آب برای شکلات" خیلی بهتر از این کتاب بود. با این حال این کتاب را هم دوست داشتم.

وقتی کسی را می‌بوسیم یا برایش کفش می‌خریم که خیلی به آن نیاز دارد، در حقیقت به او می‌گوییم دوستش داریم. به عبارتی، خریدن کفش همان کاری را می‌کند که بوسیدن انجام می‌دهد. همه‌ی این‌ها نشانه‌ی عشق است اما به این معنی نیست که یکی بتواند جایگزین دیگری شود. مادیات بدون عشق می‌تواند به وسیله‌ای برای زورگویی یا فساد تبدیل شود، شاید هم به وسیله‌ای برای منت گذاشتن یا انتظار متقابل. اگر انسان با نان خشک و خالی نمی‌تواند سر کند، با عشق تنها هم دوام نمی‌آورد. به همین دلیل است که دیدن یک عاشق فقیر دل آدم را به درد می‌آورد. بی‌پولی می‌تواند به تدریج پرشورترین رابطه عاشقانه را نیز از بین ببرد. صفحه ۵۹ کتاب

Главный герой Хубило обладает сверхчувствительностью и может воспринимать тончайшие сигналы от солнца, разных предметов и людей. И это не просто способность воспринимать, это ещё и способность соединять.
Не единожды этот дар принял ему немало проблем. Люди ведь не любят, когда их истинные намерения и чувства становились понятными другим и даже самим себе, поскольку люди привыкли подавлять и заглушать эти глубинные мысли. Это несоответствие между словами и желаниями порождает коммуникационные проблемы и "служат почвой для появления двойной морали как у отдельных людей, так и у целых народов, которые говоря одно, делают другое".
Ещё в детстве ему удалось примирить мать и бабушку, а она была выходцем из коренных народов, потомков майя, чем она очень гордилась, и не говорила по-испански. Всего-то, переводя их реплики, он добавлял чуточку любезности в их предложения. Он простой человек, работник телеграфа, страстно любит свою жену, вышедшую из семьи богачей и согласившейся во имя любви на снижение социального статуса и стандартов качества жизни. Это поистине редкость.
Герои преодолевают много сложностей, но все равно вынуждены расстаться. Перед смертью Хубило от инсульта, дочь находит возможность коммуникации посредством азбуки морзе, дешифруемой компьютером.
Сюжет простой, простая семейная сага. Но роман очаровывает и магическим реализмом, и правильной расстановкой иерархии жизненных ценностей, и крепкой основой - любви, прощением и пониманием - все здраво и здОрово. Возможно, это потому, что роман автобиографический или вернее о предках, а когда пишешь о родителях, всегда делаешь это с особенной светлой памятью и с глубокой любовью, которую невозможно не ощутить даже и не обладая сверхчувствительностью настоящего Телеграфиста, каким был главный герой.

خیلی دوستش داشتم... شاید چیزی بین 4 و 5 ستاره..
لطیف بود و دوست داشتنی. داستان یک تلگرافچی، که صدای کهکشان‌ها رو می‌شنوه و عاشق زن و بچه هاشه.

Para começar, a capa é maravilhosa e retrata bem os protagonistas desta história.
Já tinha lido há uns bons anos "Como água para chocolate" e gostado muito do livro, apesar do seu fim agridoce. Nesta história o fim também não é "e foram felizes para sempre".
Há uma aura de misticismo, quase de magia nos protagonistas que parecem um pouco do outro mundo, o que para quem não se identificar com o realismo mágico, poderá não apreciar.
A história de Júbilo e Lucha parece bastante simples mas, além de ter sido pautada por um amor avassalador, também tem momentos de profunda tragédia.
E foi uma pena essa tragédia, cumulada com a falta de comunicação, os ter afastado e impedido de continuar a viver esta paixão incontrolável.
A escrita da Laura Esquivel é simples, mas ao mesmo tempo deliciosa e envolvente.

کتاب را به پیشنهاد مصرانه‌ی همکار کتاب‌فروشم شروع کردم ولی اصلا توقعم را برآورده نکرد. داستان، روایت زندگی یک مایایی دورگه به نام خوبیلوست که تا حدی موهبت فکرخوانی دارد و از کودکی تا مرگ او و فراز و نشیب زندگی او را شامل می‌شود

Swift as Desire was not the novel I was expecting, but it was a novel that touched me deeply. It is different from other Esquivel's writing in the sense that it's more auto-biographical and personal. Swift as Desire is devoted to Esquivel's father- the telegraphist. Indeed, much of this novel describes a strong bond and love between a father and a daughter that seems to resist even death itself. The mixing of magical realism with the deeply personal narrative didn't always work well stylistically, though. Often I felt like I was reading two separate novels. This review will contain spoilers for 'both' of them, so make sure to stop reading if you want to avoid them.
Swift as Desire starts as a novel about Júbilo, a man with an extraordinary gift of understanding people, born from a mixed marriage of an ingenious man and a Spanish woman. There is talk about his cosmic connection to the Universe, the Mayan and Aztec culture and so on. Naturally, you as a reader expect to read about his life and adventures in the fascinating multicultural Mexico.
However, that is not what this novel ultimately is about. It is more about one daughter dealing with the imminent death of her father and trying to make sense of the estrangement of her parents.
The novel keeps making you think it is going to venture deeper into magic realism, but instead it focuses mainly on deeply personal examination of Júbilo's marriage to Lucha made by their daughter who is taking care of him while he is dying. Her trying to make sense of things is what this novel is really about and much of it seems to be autobiographical writing. A daughter grieving for her father who is dying and in some ways also for her mother who became estranged from her husband. A daughter grieving for the loss of love between her parents, somehow instinctively understanding how strong their bond was and wondering what could have possibly driven them apart. In other words, this novel is more family realism than magic realism, as it draws towards its end you'll see there are no adventures besides the great mystery of love and married life.

Swift as Desire is very focused on the life of one family, the other characters and their faiths seem like only an after-thought. There seems to be a lot of repetition in it as well, as if the author herself is trying to remind herself of certain things. In some sense, this novel feels unfinished. I can even understand why some readers didn't like this novel or felt disappointed with it. The narrative frustrated me a little, I have to admit. Despite the non-linear and chaotic story-telling, it wasn't difficult to follow Júbilo's life story especially since there were so many spoilers and hints in the story itself, the only thing is- was that really necessary? There were no other story lines that needed to be merged together, it was a story about one family and while some digressions made sense, there seemed to be too many of them and they took away from the personal aspect of the book.
Was there really a need for so many digressions and narrative time shifts? The basic plot seemed pretty obvious, driven by one cartoonish antagonist and there was perhaps no need to keep building all that suspense with spoilers within the narrative itself, all that foreshadowing and repeating about how the antagonist will get his revenge- not when the ending will be a deeply personal story of loss and tragic death of a sibling you never knew about. It felt out of place. The story could have been told in a more linear way and still be emotional and powerful. All those time shifts almost made me disconnected from everything that was going on. What was really interesting about this novel was the excellent examination of what it means to love, the psychological analysis of married life and its challenges as well as parenting. What was really touching was the autobiographical description of dealing with the death of your parent. This 'personal' aspect of the novel was brilliant, but the general plot and narrative- it left a lot to be desired.
This novel is not a stylistic success. I felt it didn't manage to walk the fine line between magic realism and autobiographic writing, one took over the other and at times I felt felt like I'm reading a sketch of a novel but at the same time it managed to touch me deeply. It is a novel one can learn much from, a novel filled with love. Indeed, Swift as Desire is incredibly touching in its examination of grief and wonderfully philosophical in its study of marriage. It is a novel that made me tear up, so it definitely deserves five starts from me. I'm happy I bought and read this novel yesterday, now I have a pretty copy of it (with the original illustration) that I'll be sure to pass on to someone.

I just need to keep reminding myself that not everything is as wonderful as Like Water For Chocolate. But this book does have that same sort of magical realism that Chocolate had, and it did have many beautiful passages. I especially loved the beginning of Chapter 4, where we learn that "Love is a verb."
This is a tragic story of love and loss that will probably please most. It's not perfect, and it's not brilliant, and it's not Chocolate, but it's easily better than average.

گاهی یادم میره که بعد خوندن یه کتاب باید ریویو بنویسم، و اینطوری میشه که یادم میره قرار بود چی بگم
گاهی مشتاقم که سریع یه کتابِ جدید شروع کنم.
من خیلی کم پیش میاد کتابی رو به پیشنهاد یکی دیگه بخونم ولی این کتاب رو واقعا دوست داشتم،سر یکی از کلاس های دانشگاه معرفی شد .
داستانِ خوبیلوی تلگرافچی که به قدرت واژه ها پی برد( واژه‌ها می‌توانند انسان‌ها را به هم نزدیک یا از هم دور کنند)و واقعن شگفت انگیز بود و حس خوبی داست خوندن این کتاب.

Una historia hermosa y muy emotiva, con esa magia característica de Laura Esquivel, me gustó mucho la historia de Júbilo, un ser humano muy especial, que amó intensamente, que sintió bastante y ayudó a muchos siendo telegrafista, se lee bien rápido, te atrapa y te hace suspirar y reflexionar bastante.
Una historia hermosa y muy emotiva, con esa magia característica de Laura Esquivel, me gustó mucho la historia de Júbilo, un ser humano muy especial, que amó intensamente, que sintió bastante y ayudó a muchos siendo telegrafista, se lee bien rápido, te atrapa y te hace suspirar y reflexionar bastante.

Not my type of book. I was expecting the magic of Like Water For Chocolate.
Laura Esquivel writes prose as it were poetry. It is musical. It flows and takes you away. The book was written wonderfully but it seemed to me that the story was only important to the writer only. Unfortunately, I didn't care about the characters in the book.

Tão Veloz como o Desejo é tão bom ou melhor do que o Como Água para Chocolate. Tem o seu surrealismo intrínseco. As personagens são inesquecíveis. Júbilo domina o código Morse e trabalha numa estação de telégrafo, onde passa mensagens convenientemente manipuladas. Júbilo tem um dom: o que percepcionar o mundo ao redor com uma clareza só sua. Deste modo, aplica a sua sensibilidade a favor do bem dos outros. É desprendido e benevolente, tem um espírito muito próprio que, de início estranhei, e depois adorei. E há a Lucha, Luz María, o amor da sua vida. E o modo como se separam e como só se reencontram quando ele está cingido à cama... sem poder mover-se... e o código Morse volta a ser o único meio de comunicação à sua disposição...

Después de tener lectura malas es un enorme gusto encontrarme con este tipo de historias.
Laura logra transportarme a un México de antes con su hermosa pluma.
El final es el punto débil del libro, pero vale la pena conocer la historia de Lucha y Júbilo.
Lo que más me gustó es la manera en la que juega con la nostalgia, el cómo los personas extrañan sus mejores años. Sin lugar a dudas uno de los mejores libros que he leído este año.

This novel is a record of the love story of Jublio and Lucha. Jublio is a telegraph operator who prides himself of being able to sense the true meaning behind people's words when he is passing on a message or interpreting words. Lucha is a girl from a rich family, who falls hopelessly in love with Jublio and marries him, despite the fact does not have as much money as she is used to having, and she struggles with having to make ends meet every month.
Their passion for one another helps them to make a happy marriage, until tragedy strikes. The question that then gets asked is: is passion enough to sustain a marriage? The book then shows the reader how important communication is in keeping a relationship alive.
I think that I had higher hopes for this one, just because it is written by Laura Esquivel, and Like Water for Chocolate is one of my all time favourite books. But this one didn't quite blow me away.

May 11, 2025I really like Laura Esquivel’s writing, and Swift as Desire delivered.
I enjoyed her fanciful descriptions of communications in different modes, particularly the excitement of telegraphs, the newest and fastest technology at the time.
The story was lively, but with sadness through it too. I found it a wonderful reminder of how technology shifts and changes, and skills that were once so valued can become outdated and irrelevant.
While it didn’t reach the heights of Like Water for Chocolate, the author’s love of her characters, the place and the time really shone through.

There were some really interesting turns of phrase in this book. I really admire when a translation can be melodic, poetic, and powerful.
Many people have said that this book isn't as good as "Like Water for Chocolate," but I don't care to make a comparison. I liked this book. That's enough for me.
I think one thing about this book that threw me for a loop, though, was the part where Jùblio's grandmother, Itzel (a Mexican of Mayan descent), forms a dislike for her daughter-in-law based on the fact that she is "white" (a Mexican of Spanish descent.) I literally blinked and furrowed by brow. Pardon me? What a surprise! I guess race is very subjective. I wonder if Spaniards consider themselves "white"? I can say with some confidence that I doubt any Americans would say that a Mexican, whether Spanish or not, was caucasian. It sparked this whole racial debate in my head that went on for weeks after I'd finished the book. I think my Mohawk friend, Jessica, would be a good person to discuss that with!
Anyway, a fine read. I hope that the next reader is pleased with it, too.

This is the 3rd book I’ve read by Laura Esquivel and I can’t recommend her books enough. She has a way of giving ordinary things magical qualities. She also gives you insight in other cultures and their history. This story is about love, family ,trust and how communication is vital to balance and harmony. I loved how she gave you both sides in Jubilo and Lucha relationships. It was very clear for the reader were things got lost in translation and caused a rift between this couple. I highly recommend this quick satisfying read 😊

Después de acordarme de la existencia de Como agua para chocolate sentí la necesidad de volver a leer a Laura Esquivel, y que suerte que lo hice, porque encontré nuevamente la calidez de sus libros. Hay algo fascinante en reconectar con autores/as latinomaericanos/as, no importa si no es nuestro país, la familiaridad de las costumbres y los tratos siempre aparece, y me toca aún más si se combina con realismo mágico. Si bien Tan veloz como el deseo es una historia que cuenta con ciertos elementos de este género, es autobiográfica y, por lo tanto, mucho más personal. No solo relata una complicada historia de amor a lo largo de los años, sino también el duelo que vive una hija cuando su ser más amado está en sus últimos días. Esta mezcla puede no hacer click con todos los lectores, pero conmigo lo hizo al 100%.
Si algo me enloquece de la prosa de Laura Esquivel, es lo poética que se siente y la forma de entrelazar esa poesía en relatos de lo más simples. No negocio la presencia de reflexiones que me marquen al momento de amar un libro, y sin duda los dos que leí de la autora cumplen a la perfección. Ya empiezo la lectura con una lapicera y un resaltador en la mano. Es muy valioso para mí encenderme, enojarme y emocionarme, y confío en este tipo de obras para hacerlo, y hasta ahora, no me han decepcionado. No sé como explicarlo, pero realmente es mágica la experiencia, y me voy con la misma sensación que cuando terminé Como agua para chocolate, llena de ganas de adentrarme más al género, y por supuesto, de leer más y más de Esquivel <3

La historia inicia narrándonos un poco de la vida de Jubilo un joven que desde su niñez descubre que tiene cierta habilidad para traducir las palabras y sentimientos de la gente y así lograr que se comunicaran con quienes les importaban de una manera más clara logrando así trasmitir su mensaje y uniendo y hasta reconciliando a la gente.
Con el tiempo Jubilo decide ser telegrafista para lograr utilizar esa “habilidad” para unir y reconciliar a más gente. Pero pronto se da cuenta de que no es tan fácil como lo pensaba.
Los pilares de la historia son Lucha y jubilo quienes se aman pero son completamente diferentes y eso nos lleva a preguntarnos si lograran terminar juntos o no, ella viene de una familia adinerada y el de una familia muy pobre así que piensan muy diferente, peeeero de eso no les diré ya nada para que se animen a leerlo.
La abuela Itzel es todo un personaje, tiene origen Maya así que desde que Jubilo era pequeño le mostro sus costumbres con la intención de que conectara con el universo.
He leído pocos libros de Laura Esquivel pero con esos pocos me he dado cuenta de que en cada uno de sus libros enlaza a los personajes de cada libro con personajes reales con nuestro pasado, con la historia de México, con la que en mi caso conozco lo que hasta en cierta forma aprendí o escuche en la escuela o por temas que en día a día he encontrado, pero ella nos hace verlo y sentirlo de una manera diferente que te hace querer saber más y eso es lo que más me gusta de sus libros.
Es fácil, rápido y claro de leer, una historia diferente, muy interesante y muy pero muuuuy divertida.
Cuéntenme si ya lo leyeron y que les pareció, que los leo…

La historia bella de Júbilo y Lucha es mi gran favorita de la autora Laura Esquivel.
Lluvia derrama su corazón sobre su padre Jubilo, que tiene la enfermedad de Parkinson y ha perdido su capacidad de hablar. Tratando de averiguar qué salió mal en el matrimonio de sus padres, descubre que su madre había sacrificado su estatus de clase alta en una prisa por perder su virginidad al casarse con el literalmente magnético Jubilo, un aspirante a telégrafo y un hombre simple con sangre maya que puede sentir las energías eléctricas de las personas.
El rico entorno del México terrenal como telón de fondo para la historia de amor que se ha equivocado de una familia hace que la lectura sea suave y sencilla para los devotos de un romance de calidad.
Había decidido sólo repasar algunas notas para mi club de lectura y termine releyendo toda esta maravillosa historia.

Al inicio me agradó la novela. Un tanto por el mensaje alrededor de la comunicación asertiva y otro tanto por las costumbres y tradiciones mayas de su abuela Itzel.
Me gustó el personaje de Júbilo, su optimismo y actitud ante la vida.
Pero el estilo narrativo de Laura Esquivel me pareció muy plano y conforme avancé, la lectura me pareció tediosa.
Por fortuna, es una novela muy corta...
