dude, barrel racing. politics of the rodeo. a broken down bronco and a girl who needs something to love.

strangely, the things that stick out most in my memory are repairing and spray-painting the old trailer, and something to do with sleeping bags.

there's a run-away element to it, but it's not like, Julie of the Wolves or anything like that. the horse's name was Indigo? something like that. and there was the belt buckle! from winning the rodeo! that now that i think about it, reminds me of temperance brennan's mom's belt buckle . . .

i should try to find this somewhere again. it was truly one of my favorite books, and i read it at least once every summer for years. it was tradition!

Bottom Line: Great book, reread

This is a teenage lead character that teenagers can relate and aspire to. She is an independent, strong willed go-getter who builds a life for herself on her terms. The story is realistic and while it is a happy ending type story, it doesn't sugarcoat the challenges and the financial restrictions the characters face. This novel written in 1982 has stood the test of time very well.

I got this book back when I was going through my everything horse phase. It's a coming on age / running away to join the rodeo story. It's akin to the Journey of Natty Gan but not quite as good.

I really enjoyed this book. A sweet book on the kindness of people and the love of horses.
I didn't want it to end; I could have followed her to every Rodeo and relived my horseback days.
