It's not every day you see a naked body slumped by the side of the road...
This ominous sight is just the beginning of a mystery that will span two dimensions.
When California teen Arizona Darley and her siblings go missing, their mother, Dr. Olivia Darley, discovers that the time-travel portal she invented has been hijacked.
Is the hijacker responsible for the disappearance of her children? Have the children been transported to another dimension? If so, the police and FBI will never be able to find them, and Olivia must find a way to rescue her children on her own.
How will she do this without access to the portal? From the back cover of ISBN 0615376819 / 9780615376813
Imogen Rose is the author of the bestselling series, Portal Chronicles, which has attained cult status within indie literature and become a favorite among teens and adults alike. An immunologist by profession, Dr. Rose published her first work of fiction in 2010. She now writes full time and is currently working on her second teen series, the Bonfire Chronicles. Imogen was born in Sweden and has lived in several places, counting London among her favorites. She moved to New Jersey in 2001. A self-confessed Hermès addict, Imogen freely admits to being obsessed with Kurt Cobain. She enjoys shopping, traveling, watching movies, and hanging out with her family, friends, and Chihuahua.
A thrilling story and one that I could not put down.. literally. I read the whole thing in one sitting, not able to stop for a drink or some munch.
Imogen Rose has blissfully refrained from excessive label-dropping in this book, which has been a pleasant surprise, but it ends in such a way that I feel inclined to start the third installment right away. Alas, some sleep is required each day, and starting a new book would deprive me of what little sleep I can yet get out of the night :)
A few months ago I read “Portal” by Imogen Rose and loved it. Quickly after it’s conclusion, however, I became apprehensive about reading “Equilibrium” (book 2 in the series.) Why? Well that’s simple. After reading not 1 but 4 different “#2′s” last year, (and being disappointed by each and every one of them) I didn’t want to ruin my love for Rose’s characters.
Now, while some of y’all are probably screaming at me for not having faith in the author (or her ability to deliver a successful second book) I assure you that was not the case. The problem actually arose from the story line. “Portal” (in my opinion) was wildly successful. Chocked full of the elements needed to make a novel shine, (intrigue, mystery and love) disliking it was never an option, but that’s not to say I didn’t have 1 minor issue with it. The cliffhanger ending.
In my head the story had no where left to go. Arizona had a choice, and either choice would result in the same story. A journey to find herself. So… imagine my surprise when I finally (cause let’s face it…it was going to have to happen eventually) picked up my copy of “Equilibrium” and found that the world I had left behind was only a “teaser” for the mayhem that was about to occur.
Arizona has a decision to make, a tough one as a matter of fact. Stay with her “new” family (several weeks in the future,) or go home to her dad (the never there, leaves the house a total wreck, borrows money from his daughter to support his gambling addiction dad.) Not that difficult of a decision right? Wrong. Despite her new relationship, the fact of the matter was… her mom lied to her. So what was she going to do about it? Unfortunately Arizona never has the chance to figure that out. While trying to sort through (not only) her feelings, but whether or not she actually believes the line of total BS her mom is feeding her (conveniently at the lake with Kellen) the unthinkable happens. She blacks out. Could this be a side effect of the Portal? Why can’t she feel her legs? And more importantly where in the name of God is she?
To say I was shocking by the turn of this story would be a gross understatement. I was floored. The first go around we only had 2 narrators. (Arizona and her mother) in Equilibrium we are blessed with the ability to see from EVERY angle. Want to know what lady cop is thinking? No problem. Its right here. Want to know what is going through David’s head while Kellen is laid up? No problem. In short… the complexity of this novel blew Portal out of the water. In Portal I felt like I was on a singular journey. Who was Arizona and why was this happening to her. In Equilibrium the “journey” became a moot point, and “survival” became the name of the game. Jam packed with action, Rose’s plot took on a life of it’s own, and by the end I found myself caring for (and cheering for) characters I could have cared less about in Portal.
Once again I have learned my lesson. DO NOT ASSUME. And just to stress how fantastic this book actually was… I’m starting “Quantum” tonight.
Happy reading my fellow Kindle-ites and remember: Love is only the beginning of the story.
A sequel. Part two. Book two. Two little words that make me cringe. As a rule, I try to avoid series (although it seems that is all I'm reading these days, go figure). It's not that I have anything against them. I like the character development that can happen across multiple books. I like following story lines and threads through to the bitter end. I don't like BOOK TWO though. That usually means that, well, it's going to suck. What is it with "book two"? Do authors set out to make them bad or does it just happen that way?
I read the first book of this series and got to the end where I realized there will be a book two. I really wanted to cry. It meant that a story I liked would likely be slaughtered. But I powered through and I bought Equilibrium just the same. Man, am I glad that I did! Imogen Rose has done a fantastic job of continuing the story while introducing us to new elements. There wasn't a sucky story line in the bunch. Kudos to her! Well edited, well executed and just downright fun.
The thing that I think I like about these books is that they are not heavy. It's pretty light scifi time travel, which is right up my alley. There's a young adult element to it, but unlike other popular YA, I don't feel the need to have a friend hold down Arizona while I beat the living snot out of her. She's a likable character with very realistic teenage angst. It just happens that her mom built a time portal and she remembers her life from another dimension. Yup, pretty normal, alright!
Seriously though. This book is very well done. The author is definitely one to watch. Her writing style is perfect for this sub-genre of YA and I hope she sticks with it. Her writing was great in the first book and she doesn't disappoint in the second. I'm told the third book will be out in the Fall 2010. Let's hope! The ending left me on edge, ahhh!, cliffhangers!
I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. It loses a half star because there's a few time where the... I'm not sure of the phrase for it, but who's "speaking" change. It goes from being narrated to first person (Arizona) a few times without really giving us a heads up as to what's going on. For instance, it went from telling us what Rupert was doing and a few paragraphs later it read "I laughed". Um, the narrator laughed? SO very minor and not something I would noticed usually. And yes, there was a ---- break to show a change of scene. It's my own personal niggle. I'm weird like that, folks!
Very highly recommended. A light read that will leave you smiling. Trust me, just buy it.
Equilibrium begins with the same night that Portal left off. Although Arizona has many questions about the portal her mother built and how her life has turned out how it has, she's happy with her choice to stay in this dimension with her family and boyfriend, Kellan. That is, until she is violently ripped from it and thrust into her original dimension. Arizona learns much more about how her family came to be together, and also more about time-travel. She also begins to have feelings for another young man, further confusing her life.
Equilibrium is adventurous, fun and at times, funny, just the like the first in the series. The growing love between Arizona and Kellan is heartwarming instead of sappy. Although there is some resolution with this novel, there is still somewhat of a cliffhanger again, leaving the reader wanting more. Another nice part of the Portal series is that it is Sci-Fi Lite. The science fiction portion of the book is simplistic enough to not lose readers that wouldn't normally read that genre, but could possibly rouse an interest there.
Rose has grown with her writing from her first novel, Portal. Although the dialog is still unrealistic, it has greatly improved. Also, what seemed like extreme product-placement in the first novel simply seems like casual mention of a brand here. Rose's writing is developing and it's exciting to see what will be coming next!
Once again Miss Imogen Rose has written herself a fantabulous story! Seriously, I thought that "Portal" was good, but "Equilibrium"? It blew "Portal" out of the water! This has hands-down been one of the most suspenseful books I have read in quite some time- I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat while reading it.
In my review of "Portal" I complained about some of the dialogue that Imogen wrote, I found portions of it to be really choppy and robot-like, but I didn't find that at all with this book, everything flowed together nicely and it is evident that Imogen is really developing as an author. What I was also pleasantly surprised with this book was the character development in this book, I thought that I had a pretty good grasp on Arizona, Kellan, and Henry (heck, even David) in "Portal" and that I couldn't really learn all that much more about them, but I was totally wrong. I don't think I have ever come across such selfless and caring characters than the characters that are in this series before.
If I had to complain about one thing in this book I it would be the adults. Hearing about Ollie and Rup being all lovey dovey together just really doesn't do anything for me, I would much prefer to hear about the love lives of the teens.
All in all, I highly recommend this book, as I said in my review of "Portal", this series is one of the most original that I have ever read before! I think that readers of all ages will really enjoy these books!
This series has been taunting me for a while, ever since I bought it over a year ago. It sounded so interesting, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to it's hype at all. I did finish the entire series, which ended up being a huge waste of my time. I kept thinking it was going to get better, but sadly, it never did.
The writing was unnatural and didn't flow well, especially in the dialogue, and I felt that there were a lot of missed opportunities in the storyline. I'm no writer, but if I were, the story would have been much different.
There were a lot of outside conflicts and battles that were hinted at, making you think the protagonist would get involved in them (which would have made for a much better story), but it turned out that it was only a love story. And an angsty one, at that! Don't get me wrong. I love love stories, but there was so much potential for the plot to thicken in the rest of the story that I was disappointed when it turned out to be just another angsty love story that could give Twilight a run for its money.
And I know that ever since Twilight and Harry Potter, the money-makers have all been about the supernatural, but I thought the Wanderers were a ridiculous addition to this storyline. It should have been complete science fiction, rather than paranormal fiction. It was completely unnecessary to involve paranormal beings.
Overall, I thought the premise was good, but the execution was very poor.
Equilibrium took off perfect. Everything was perfect in Arizona's world. She has the life she always wanted, a family she loves, and a perfect relationship. What more could she ask for? Answers.
Arizona has been through a lot of things in the past few months. More than anyone could ever imagine. After a life that Arizona thought could not have gotten any worse than it was... It did. If finally enjoying your life after such a change is a bad thing, just imagine getting kidnapped. Yes you can say things have just gotten worse for Arizona.
Imogen Rose certainly surprised me! Not only do we get to meet some more characters, but we actually get a few answers! Which was very exciting for me :D But then again, we get more questions in which we want answers. Im just glad there are more books coming in the series! Of course there were many twists and turns once more in the second book in the Portal Chronicles.
Im not going to give anything away that I haven't already said. All I can say is that Equilibrium was more than I ever imagined and very very addictive. The characters became closer yet separated in different ways. Once more Rose had me feeling close to these characters and dying for more.
If you loved Portal by Imogen Rose, the story of tomboy Arizona Stevens who hates her little sister and whose parents are divorced, waking up one day in the back of a van and into an alternative universe where she becomes Arizona Darely, a blond cheerleading who loves her little sister and whose parents love each other even more….you will love this book.
The story Equilibrium addresses some of the nagging questions the reader might have had from the first book, and dives more into the life of Arizona's mother, Olivia Stevens. The reader will learn more about Olivia's colleagues too, as well as their children and lives which have been altered dramatically by the 'portal'.
The reader will re-discover the passion Arizona and Kellan shared from the first book, falling in love with their union all over again. A healthy mix of science fiction and romance, this story is not cliche, nor sappy and it doesn't drown the reader in science fiction either.
I enjoyed it more than the first book!
A great read for those who love the Sookie Stackhouse Series and the passion of Twilight, fans of Portal will not be disappointed in this sequel entitled Equilibrium.
I acquired Equilibrium through a first reads giveaway.
I said some of the following in my review of the first book in the series, Portal. Unfortunately, my complaints are applicable for the second book as well.
The plot is promising and fresh. Sometimes the dialog made me cringe, but I am not a teenage girl so that probably explains my issues with the dialog. The writing is also a bit immature. Random exclamations and fragmented sentences may work on a small scale, but there were way too many for my taste. Perhaps the writing style appeals to the younger audience for which these books are intended.
The grammatical errors, though, really made me insane. I realize that this is a self-published book, but it made me want to grab a red pen every time I came across a punctuation or spelling error. I think the book would have been ten times better with a good editor.
Equilibrium seemed to drag at times, but the story ended strong. Strong enough that I am considering reading the third in the series, despite the fact that I know I am in for the same grammatical issues that bothered me while reading the first two books.
The perfect world of Mountain View is falling apart. We get a glimpse of Arizona's life in Princeton, and she is not as happy there as she thought she would be. There is a lot of drama in both dimensions.
We are introduced to more `Wanderers' and get a little for information and history about them. Rupert's connection is still shady. Who exactly is Rupert? Arizona and her mom finally have a talk and Arizona starts gaining a respect and understanding for her mom that she didn't have before. The Stevens and the Darley personalities seem to be merging; poor Arizona doesn't know who she is.
Equilibrium moves fast with a lot of drama and suspense. Several more characters are introduced and the alternating perspective gets a bit confusing at times. There are a few typos but I am loving the story and have to find the answers to several more questions that have come up! I am sitting on the edge of my seat, now on to Quantum!
Arizona's story continues with more twists and turns. She still has very little answers and a lot of questions. New details about her worlds are revealed and she discovers another friend (or two) has taken a liking towards her. The second book has a good pace to it. It's not too slow or boring. It's not overly detailed and aggravating. Just enough to keep the suspense and intensity going. I liked this book better than the first one. The writing has improved, both grammar and plot. The only thing that prevented me from giving a five star rating was believability. The characters actions and reactions are not believable. When Harry and Ella end up in the room in NJ everyone is too calm and accepting of the situation. Imagine this happened to you? Would you just accept it? No, a freak out, panic session would probably ensue. Starting book three now!
I heard over and over again that Equilibrium was better than Portal. I thought to myself, "how can that possibly be? Portal was awesome!" I don't know how she did it, but Imogen truly has outdone herself. Equilibrium delivers all that is promised and then some. It is an action-packed tale filled with mystery and suspense. The story starts off where Portal ended, and we are drawn further into the bizarre life that Arizona has found herself. Any and all questions that you may have had after reading Portal are answered by the end of the book. Well, not all. Imogen has deviously put a few new twists and turns in the story. But we will have to wait for Quantum to get those answers. I for one, cannot wait!!!
The adventures of reluctant time-traveler Arizona Stevens continue in this second installment of Imogen Rose’s “Portal Chronicles.” Although first reading “Portal,” the initial book in the series, might be preferable, Rose sets the stage well enough in this volume for those just joining to quickly orient themselves.
“Equilibrium” is “Portal” with the heat turned up. The decisions Arizona faces are harder; the situations more perilous. As relatively minor characters who were mostly on the sidelines in “Portal” become more involved the complexity and intensity increases. My only complaint is now I have to wait several months for the release of “Quantum,” the next installment in the “Portal Chronicles.”
This second in a series did not disappoint! "Portal" was so good that I was worried if this second book could compare and it did! Again, I was unable to put this book down and read it in 2 days. Arizona is a very strong main character and all supporting characters are special in their own ways. They all contribute and make the book flow as the story unfolds. In this second book we follow Arizona as she gets thrown back into "Stevens" world. Before this, Arizona thought she wanted nothing more than to be back, but now that she is with her dad and "old" friends, she finds herself alone and questioning her wishes. Read "Equilibrium" and see exactly how Arizona gets into the world she belongs!
When I started the 'Portal Chronicles', I thought it was a good story line and was interested. Sadly Equilibrium was not as good as the first book, Portal.
Several times in this book (way too many times) someone would gather people together to get 'answers' and then go one to say 'I can't answer that at the moment until but I will answer your questions' and then NOTHING IS ANSWERED.
Now Daniel and Arizona like each other? It was just a week ago she was all sprung in love with Kellan and its the reason why she stayed in Mountain View. And when she's Arizona Stevens she's not tough....just irritating to a point I want to send her back to the next deminsion and never return for her.
I'm so irritated with this book, I'm debating on reading the next book.
Meh.....I said this about the first book and I will say it again: Intriguing storyline, but underdeveloped and rushed.
And terrible dialogue and terrible character reactions. Completely unrealistic. And that is the biggest problem I have with this series. I have no idea how these books are rated so high! The writing is absolutely awful. Sometimes I wonder how old the author is, based on her writing, I would say maybe 12.
That being said (again, from my review of the first book), it was somewhat more interesting. Just not written better. I will read the last book to see how it all ends, but definitely not for a love of the books or the author.
This book leaves you hanging as did the first one in this series. A great idea for a book, but as I said about Portal, very very simply written. Entertainment is what this book is all about but the technical side of me is bugged by the holes in the physics portion of this story. The Many Worlds Theory is much more involved than how it is presented here. I would like this series more if there was an editor.
Equilibrium is a wonderful sequel to Portal, and Imogen Rose has definitely developed a broader scope to the narrative, adding in a racial mythology to deepen the mystery. If the first novel basically developed the characters, this one really sets up the twists and turns of the plot, and the pacing is wonderful. The writing is much tighter in this novel, and I really enjoyed spending time Arizona's worlds once again.
I loved this series! It's an excellent sequel to Portal. I've enjoyed learning more about the characters and the world!
Rose is capable of producing fiction that draws the reader in from page one. Her characters are well-written, and her plot is intriguing.
This is the first book I've ever read with this kind of storyline--it was refreshing to see a series that wasn't the same story I'd read a million times before.
Arizona has been back to the future or was she in the past, anyway she is now back to the home that she feels most comfortable in and with her boyfriend. Time travel now seems real to her and she can finally grasp the concept that the re are different dimensions and splits it's in time space. Arizona's mother has been threatened with exposure of the portal, will she give in.
This book is the continuation of Portals, a science fiction, time traveling, YA romance novel. This book was not as good as the first as we got less character development and more action. This to me did not work as well as the first. I still recommend this book to those that want a very fast paced, short length, light fare science fiction/ YA series.
okay, so I won this book in a give away quite some time ago but I had to buy the first book and read it before I could read this one!! I have really enjoyed this series and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one!! These books brought me into the world of time travel fro the first time and I'll have to say I was skeptical at first but was won over by it immediately!! LOVED IT!!
This wasn't bad, but I had such a hard time following because the author was constantly switching the point of view from character to character. Plus I am a fan of romance but alot of this reminded me of a bad lifetime movie. I might read the next one but not quite sure yet. I was just a little curious after the first one so I picked this one up.
It's my own fault - curiosity got the better of me and I skimmed the second one. I don't know how she did it, but the second one is even worse than the first. The shaky science can't hold up to any sort of scrutiny and Rose clearly knows nothing about police procedure. Complete mumbo jumbo.
I did like the story, but I felt the original relationships were lacking because of how the book starts off. I can't wait to learn more about David/Kellan and where they stand in the next book. I finished this in about 3 hours & will buy book 3.
Starting out with "Portal," the first in this series, I'm hoping to be skipping on to this second book in the series. Once in a while, I love to read YA fiction, and this one sounds really good. It's had very sound and high praise on Amazon.com.
