During his time as pastor there, the church doubled in size and began a unique 24-hour Intercessroy Prayer Ministry. Chronological Biography of the Life of Ron Dunn
Ron Dun was born October 24, 1936, in Poteau, OK, to Eunice and Cecil Dunn He had one brother, Barry Dunn, of Nashville, TN, and grew up mostly in Fort Smith, AR.
Ron was baptized at the age of 9, in Fort Smith, AR, at Southside Baptist Church. A short time later his family joined First Baptist Church, Fort Smith, AR, where Dr. J. Harold Smith was the pastor and had a great influence on his life and ministry.
He surrendered to the ministry in 1952 at the age of 15 at a Baptist encampment while Dr. Carl Bates was preaching. Ron began preaching at the city jail in Fort Smith at the age of 15 through the ministry of First Baptist Church; he also began preaching in weekend revivals in small rural churches as a team of young people would go out on the weekends.
Ron preached his first extended revival in 1953 at First Baptist Church of Bow Legs, OK, where Jake Self, one of his prayer mentors, was pastor. A young man named Johnny Bisagno led the music. Ron got sick the second week of the meeting and gave Johnny his first opportunity to preach.
He was ordained to the ministry at First Baptist Church by Dr. J. Harold Smith on December 29, 1954. One of the most important things the pastor said that night was, "God has not called you to be the next Billy Graham; he has called you to be Ronnie Dunn." Ron said that was the most disappointing thing he had ever heard, but it was the best thing he could have possibly been told. His mother reinforced that thought through the years, as well as Kaye.
Ron met Rita Kaye Mitchell in February 1955 and they married at her home in Little Rock, AR, on December 21, 1956. Just 8 days shy of her 17th birthday, Kaye left Central High School in Little Rock and transferred to the high school in Shawnee, OK, where she completed her high school degree and began attending Oklahoma Baptist University where Ron was a student.
He became the weekend pastor of a rural church, Panola Baptist Church, in Pa
"Prayer is not a substitute for work, or merely preparation for work. It is work." (Ronald Dunn, Don't Just Stand There, Pray Something, Page 17)
Well balanced book on intercessory prayer and "how tos" on starting an Intercessory Prayer Ministry in your church. I found this book very well organized and scriptural. It shows you the benefits of intercessory prayer and why God requires intercessors in the earth. God is looking for intercessors who will intercede for their nation, city, community, church, family...to bring heaven to earth, as God declares in Ezekiel 22:30:
"I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.
This book had me praying all throughout. I encourage you to lift the instructions off the pages of this book and begin to pray and intercede and change your world!
A book about prayer, basically. Sound, fairly interesting, with some good anecdotes. Quite encouraging; if nothing new, it was a useful reminder of how important it is to pray for our loved ones and situations in general.
I felt it went a little downhill at the end with a chapter about Revival which didn't really say much, and somewhat contradicted itself. I then found the appendices, about setting up a 'prayer ministry' so overwhelmingly complex and structured that I mentally and emotionally backed off!
Somehow the writing style made it feel like an early 1980s book, although to my surprise it was first published in 1991. Not that it's a topic that dates, particularly, other than the appendixes where the author recommended, among other things, a 'rolodex' - I had to Google to find out what one of those was.
On re-reading just three years later I found it quite inspiring and helpful although, once again, I found the appendices daunting in their detail.
Recommended to anyone wanting an in-depth look at prayer. The author addresses some tricky questions that are often asked about prayer, with a clear and friendly style, concluding that while God does not need us to pray, he undoubtedly uses prayer.
Excellent!! I've read this several times & we gave it to member of our prayr team at church. Dunn is aexceptionalk writer, using humor (obvious in th titile) to get across some pretty profound insights.
This was one of the first books I read when I was trying to learn how to pray for people out loud in a group setting. It is full of lots of resources to understand what you are suppose to do to be an intercessory pray partner.
Great motivator for prayer. This book gives practical examples on how to put prayer into motion. Loved it! Highly recommended for those struggling with prayer.
I really enjoyed this book. It talked a lot about how we should pray specifically which was great. I appreciated that Pastor Dunn spoke frankly that when we pray we should not be surprised when our prayers were answered - that should be the expectation.
I read this during the 2020 American Presidential Election and boy was I praying a lot then. I think tons of people were - considering how much damage this fool has done to so many people’s lives - most people wanted him to lose the election. I wanted Harris and Biden to win! Yet - so many people who wanted Biden to win said “but T will probably be re-elected.” I really think that we pray we have to understand that God has our best interests at heart! I told people: don’t put your doubts into the universe. Biden and Harris won - so I believe all our prayers worked. But I won’t gloat until January 20.
Pastor Dunn went into specifics about how his Intercessory Prayer team carried out their ministry and it was truly amazing. From colour coded cards for different types of prayers - to phoning people to ask if the prayers were answered - what a system. I appreciated that he said that “Prayer IS the WORK.” Because these days (since September) I have been making prayer my job by praying for the teachers who are working during the pandemic - since I am not working.
There are SO MANY things to pray for during this pandemic- so this book really helped me get down to work. Praying for the doctors, nurses, researchers and front line workers everywhere.
It broke my heart that Pastor Dunn died in his 60’s and that though he spoke of his son who clearly struggled with mental health issues - his son actually took his own life at 18 years old. What pain. But Pastor Dunn makes it clear that just because we pray it doesn’t mean our life will be an easy road. I appreciated that he spoke about his difficulties with his son. We don’t want to assume that a Pastor would have their life tied in a little bow just because they are close to God.
I suggest reading this book. I’ll be re-reading it often.
This is an excellent resource on how prayer works, the power of prayer, how to pray, and so much more! I love listening to Ron Dunn and reading his works. I love that I sat under a pastor who loved this man dearly. It was neat to see how much of what Ron was saying seeped into my pastor and what he led his church to do in his prayer ministry. Lots of practical pieces for me to work on and through with prayer.
Great book on power of prayer. Encourages you to pray with sincere heart. I liked the part about don’t try to impress yourself or people but keep God as your focus. Intercession is a ministry of sacrifice. I liked story about faucet. Fasting definition was clarified. Prayer and fasting was encouraged for spiritual growth
Powerful book on prayer. One of the best books written on prayer that I have ever read. It is personal, and simple in its style yet so full of powerful truths. A must read for those who are walking with Christ.
This is the best book on prayer that I have ever read and I have read many! I would give it 10 starts if I could. Every Christian leader and lay person would benefit from reading this book. Mr. Dunn is humble, wise and knowledgeable.
Amazing book on prayer whose focus is to get people praying. it tackles topics such as - what prayer is - how to pray - how not to pray - The power of Prayer - The role of prayer I would highly recommend this book to every Christian who would like to improve their prayer life as well as ministers who would want to move from just talking about prayer to getting people to start praying cause man it does a good job of that
