Did St Paul Get Jesus Right?: The Gospel According to Paul

Rate this book
Was St Paul a distorter of Jesus' original message, or a faithful follower? Over recent years some critics of Christianity have claimed that while Jesus was a gifted teacher and a man of unparalleled kindness, St Paul was the true founder of Christianity, which he based on a delusional mistake: the idea that Jesus was God. This theory has found its way into academia, churches, newspapers, and, most recently, novels. In Did St Paul Get Jesus Right? respected New Testament scholar David Wenham looks at the historical evidence for such claims. Comparing the life and message of Jesus with the writings of St Paul, he offers a thoughtful exploration of their relationship, concluding that far from imagining Christianity, Paul was the messenger of an inherited faith.

This book provides a clear and thorough examination of the Apostle Paul's relationship to the teachings of Jesus. It offers valuable insights into early Christian theology and addresses common criticisms with well-researched evidence. Highly recommended for those interested in New Testament studies and Pauline theology.

If you haven't heard of that issue about if Paul has invented Christianity or not, you'd be easily convinced as most of the New Testament was either written by Paul, written by Paul's companions/followers or written about Paul.

The book is full of information to defend against that idea but it's a little boring.

This was enjoyable, easy to read, and probably suited for New Testament introduction classes. I wish Wenham provided more extensive footnotes and resources for the reader. He does a fine job of placing Paul in the context of the gospels.
