P Is For Palmetto: A South Carolina Alphabet

Rate this book
P is for Palmetto is a collection of evocative pages of watercolor that covers this beautiful southeastern state from A to Z. Carol Crane captures the diverse features of South Carolina with her flowing verse and solid expository text, while, within the images of Mary Whyte, you can almost envision yourself standing in the vast cotton fields and walking along the sandy shores of its stunning coastline. South Carolinians, young and old, will treasure P is for Palmetto and educators will find its two-tiered teaching format extremely useful in their classrooms.

Gorgeous pictures and overview of the state. But I wish I could give this zero stars because it completely glosses over the work of enslaved people in cotton and indigo production, in Edgefield pottery, and more. It also says the Civil War began because the Union army refused to leave Fort Sumter. I got this book to read to my kids and had to stop every few pages to correct the text. Gross.

Of course I'm going to give this book about SC five stars! It's my home state and I love it. :) It really does have beautiful illustrations and twenty six fun facts. I will admit that it's a bit wordy (if you read every word of text) for a small child, but an elementary-schooler could easily enjoy. Pretty much no research value, but it is fun! I look forward to sharing this with the boy someday. Recommended!

The illustrations in this book are stunningly beautiful. The text could have been stronger and more interesting -- even, or maybe, especially for children -- but it was adequate.

A very beautifully illustrated book. It focuses a bit more on the lowcountry than the entire state, but still a great alphabet book.

Beautifully illustrated. The book is laid out with a simple alphabet phrase about South Carolina on one side and a more in-depth version of the history, symbol, or landmark on the other side. It even has South Carolina trivia on the back couple pages.

This book is the abc's of South Carolina. Each letter of the alphabet is a person, place or thing within the Palmetto State. It's a great book for children to learn about the state they live in!
