Contact #1

What To Do With Lore

Rate this book

A rough around the edges mercenary and a little spit-fire determined not to be anyone's pleasure slave-making contact has never been so volatile . . . or so much fun!

Rhyn is an ex-lawman working as a mercenary. He's contracted to protect large space freighters and passenger liners through space. He considers most sentient beings too annoying to be around on a permanent basis. He's content to swear at inanimate objects and tinker with his pride and joy-Baker's Pride; a bastardised freighter with more than one nasty little surprise under the hull skin just waiting to spring on the unsuspecting pirates he loves to goad and chase.

That is until his latest assignment brings him face to face with a stunning, fiery little cat man slave named Lore. Will the siren he discovers lead him to new horizons or will he crash and burn up on re-entry to reality?

Lore's not having a very good day. He's been reclassified as a pleasure slave, traded off-world, knocked on the head and placed in stasis and now he's woken up surrounded by four of the biggest, hairiest men he's ever laid eyes on. Oh! And it looks like they're pirates.

Just as well he's handy with a skillet and the pirates aren't immune to a few well placed hits! Will the sudden appearance of a glorious, dark skinned angel in a lawman's hat be the answer to all his lust filled prayers, or is he just another devil in disguise sent to snatch all his hopes and dreams away again?

Jade was born in 2010 after a prolonged pregnancy and labour of over thirty-four years!

Yes, she is a pseudonym. A work of my fevered imagination, which never seems to grow tired of inventing new characters. And this one's a whopper. One that seems to have taken over my life to the point I'm no longer sure where she ends and I begin! Still, it seems to be working for us.

I’ve decided she’s about twenty-four. Enjoys long walks in the country, because she doesn’t have five kids and a husband to care for. Eats as much chocolate as she wants, because she never has to worry about putting on weight (must be all those long walks!). And can often be found planning her next whirl wind world tour or endlessly typing away (without any interruptions) on another hot and steamy erotic romance. It might be space pirates; it might be shifters or a lonely vampire with a thing for the girl next door, one thing’s for sure, she loves variety and can’t wait to meet the next characters destined to fall in love.

This is one of those books that “seem larger on the inside” than they look. Despite the limited number of pages, the story gave me enough details to be able to picture the world Jade Archer created. The characters were fun and made me laugh, and the plot exploded onto the first page and didn’t let me go until the end.

I must admit that it took me a while to warm to the sarcastic and somewhat opportunistic Rhyn. I loved his sense of humor and his almost incessant swearing from the very start, though, and that opened the door for getting to know the rest of him. Which isn’t only sexy, but warm and giving – for the right person, at least.

Lore I loved from the very start. He is the absolute star of this book, as far as I’m concerned. Picturing him as a skillet-wielding menace holding four burly space pirates in check had me in peals of laughter. His courage and determination to try to make the best of a shitty life was inspiring. He took being reclassified as a pleasure slave against his will and being taken away from his home planet if not in stride, with dignity. His resolve to change his fate was unbroken, even though his inner dialogue reveals how scared he really is.

One of the many things making me look forward to the next volume(s) of this series is this intriguing hint at gender role definitions on Lore’s home planet. Essentially, there are none, and both sexes take care of children equally, as well as share all the other tasks. I can’t wait to see more!

Cute and sexy story, with an interesting plot, good world building and a cat man (!) but it moved way too fast for me to become involved in the romance.

What to do with Lore? Fall in love with him of course! Jade Archer’s debut book is well written, crafty, and downright enjoyable!

In this space adventure we first meet Captain Rhyn Baker. Baker has a mouth worthy of a sailor. He retrieves cargo stolen from the Mebian’s by pirates. Baker is my favorite character in the story, not because we share a last name or anything like that of course (wink). To me, he changes the most. This hard, dependable man finds himself vulnerable and exposed. Baker falls in love and does whatever it takes to get his love back.

Lorelei (Lore) sold into slavery by the Mebians. Aboard the spacecraft Bretag 5, Lore stares down 4 huge space pirate men trying to figure out his current predicament. Lore has been the clan leader of his people since the passing of his father when Lore was only fourteen years old. Getting to safety is not going to be easy. While detracted, in walks Lore’s savior. I think Lore is use to being the person who is depended upon, so it is a nice change when he gives himself to another.

If I did not know Archer, I wouldn’t have known this was her first book. She brings a fresh idea and plot to new character wanting their story told. Archer has created a world where I would live in a heartbeat. I want to know what happens next. What adventure will be encounter next of the Baker’s Pride?

It took me a bit to get into this story. Not sure why. Maybe it was just my mood at the time. It was cute and had a few hot scenes, but Lore was really getting on my nerves for some reason. I did end up liking him in the end though.

I've been told that this series gets better with each book so I still plan to continue on with the next story.

Yah! My wait was over! I kept checking my calendar for this release date.

Lore is the leader of his people trying desperately to bring them out of poverty only to be double crossed and traded as a pleasure slave. Lore is forcibly put in cryo for transport but was stolen by pirates.

Rhyn is the mercenary who is contracted to go after the stolen cargo. Rhyn doesn't know what to think about the skillet wielding man but finds out that he wants to keep Lore in more ways than one.

I really enjoyed this first book by Jade. It was sweet and witty. Her world is diverse and vivid. I look forward to her next book which is coming out in about 30 days. Now I am back to counting the days and checking the calendar...

It's a very sweet story that you can read quickly. Even if it's short, the world building is sketched with no info dumping. I would like to know more about Rhyn, especially about his past. The story revolves around the Contact moment, the first meeting of two people and how their life begins to change after that, the difficulties they have to go over to have a chance together. We have a promise of a future for the characters, but it's not part of the story. Lore was the more vivid character and I confess I have a soft spot for felines, so he's partially feline nature made him perfect (even if it's not a shifter story, Lore's species has feline traits). If you like m/m sci-fi romance, it's the book for you.

Delightful is the word that comes to mind to describe this first book in a great series. I was very intrigued with the fantasy world created as part of the story and was drawn in from the very first page. I absolutely adored both Rhyn and Lore - what's not to love about an adorable little cat man who can wield a pan as a weapon, stand up for himself so that you want to cheer for him, and get the big brute with a wicked sense of humor who likes to be alone fall in a big way?!! Exactly:) You can't help but enjoy this story and wish for more!!

I'm torn as to how to rate this book. This book wasn't anything I was expecting, since I hadn't read the blurb. I liked the characters, I just wanted more. More of Lore's story and how Rhyn and him save his life and the lives of his people. And what becomes of them and how they make it work. I had thought that their story might continue in the next book, but it seems to move on to other couples.

Loved it.
The characters were so great you couldn’t help but fall for them.

For such a short book it really gave you a good glimpse of what that world was like & intrigued you for the next in the series.
Can’t wait to read more

It was fun, I liked it. The beginning took a while as I'm not a sci-fi fan and being a short I get impatient to get going with relationship rather than worldbuilding but it was worth the skippy first few pages.

I didn't know what to think when the blurb said Lore was a cat man. One of the authors shorts on her website for another series had, what to my mind was dubious content for my personal taste but as it was so well written I decided to take a chance with this. He's not a shapeshiter human stuck with animal bits (phew) but a whole other humanoid specie that has feline features (yes pointy ears and claws) so it was more like an episode of Startrek than what I was expecting/hoping it wasn't.

I love books that allow you to discover your own boundaries lol.

It was pleasantly entertaining in plot and well written. I bonded with the characters and liked how they fitted into the world that was created. I'm not sure if I'd read anymore of the series. I didn't really get behind Lore's fight so am not moved to find out whether good conquers evil and all that. I like where it ended in this short so that will probably be enough for me even though I'm sure the rest of the series is as well written and entertaining :)

Now I've realised the rest of the series is about different characters in the same universe I am off to explore the other offerings ...

`What To Do With Lore' is my first published work and as such will always have a special place in my heart. Lore and Rhyn taught me so much and I loved telling their story. I hope that in the future I can write more of their tale and what happened after Rhyn figured out `What To Do With Lore'. :D

I finished this, which felt like more of an accomplishment than it ought to have. I've been struggling to get into most books lately, so it probably wasn't its fault, but I just really couldn't get into it. The one saving grace was reminding myself that Rhyn was somewhat like Mal.

But insta-love and big assumptions about who the other is based on little to no evidence? So not for me. Nor is the Big Misunderstanding. And when space stories work for me, I love them, but that seems to be the exception. So I doubt I'd have loved this story even if I'd read it at another time. I really only finished it because it was for Bingo, otherwise it would probably have been a DNF (even as short as it was, which was, frankly, one of my favorite things about it. That, and the resemblance to Mal).

This is the first book in the 'Contact' series, and I really enjoyed it.
Lore is great, and Rhyn is fun too.
I love the opening scene where he's losing a bet that he can't stop swearing. He's monitored by a machine as he's alone in his ship, and it doesn't take many minutes before he's hurling it out the hatch and calling it a bad job. Loved it! Great way to start the book and it continues to be charming and fun from there in.
I liked this so much I bought the next three books in the series from Total-E-Bound's website. :)

Not bad, but not really good either. The story had potential, but afterall it was just a pretty boring "I've heard it all before" story. They skip right to the sex, they have a communication problem, the weak girly bottom runs away and is almost raped, happy ever after...

I would have liked to have known more about the backgrounds of these characters. I think I would have enjoyed this book more if there had been more world building.

This easy and fast bang bang, fast sex isn't really for me. Good that
I didn't read this short novella sooner, it wasn't much of a read.

Ended up just skimming it as I didn't find either the MCs or story itself engaging. The writing was..... okay, but could have benefited from some editing before it was published.

This was an interesting read. I wish it could have been longer because the characters were very well written and more development potential was there.
