"A complete guide to food, shelter, and self-preservation"Written in 1956, this is a book about survival in the wild, not pleasure backpacking.

If you ever find yourself unexpectedly lost in the wilderness with almost no gear, this is the book you will have want to have read.

How to navigate without a map or compass (or GPS).

What is edible and what to avoid when scavenging for food.
From how to prevent scurvy to how to catch fish without a fishing pole or even a hook.

Constructing various types of shelter.

Backwoods medicine - treating illness or injuries without a first aid kit at hand.

In a worse case scenario, this book has the information you can fall back on for survival.
