Boy! I was so glad when this book was over. No wonder I have not read any Danielle Steel’s book in 20 years. She just repeats every sentence five times to make sure it is all engraved in your skull. I think she have a contract to write books for people with Dementia or Alzheimer. I am happy to say that this was the last DS book I read :0)

The author brought history and romance together in this book.
The scene was Germany just before WWI . A German girl ( Beats) fell in love with a French Officer(Antoine).
Both family's disowned them. She was German Jew and he French Catholic. They were on their own.
The story follows Grandmother, daughter and granddaughter as they faced the horrors of war and kept their faith and hope for a better day

Danielle Steel has never been an author who interested me. However, I was at a gathering and this book had been passed around among the women there and they raved about it. They asked if I had read it and I replied that I hadn't, so it ended up in my hands. I thought, ok, this one is about the Holocaust and that's always intriguing, so why not?

Echoes was torture for me to read. It is SO poorly written! Steel needs a competent editor! The plot is fine, and could have been done well in the hands of a talented author, but Steel's writing style distracts from the story line. She kept repeating information ad infinitum. She acts as if the reader is stupid, repeatedly driving home the same points.

I wanted to throw the book across the room at points, but still, I was determined to find out how the story would end and I wanted to have read it when I gave it back, so I persevered. Pure agony. Especially because the main character, Beata, was poorly developed and her actions far-fetched.

Do not waste your time with this drivel. If you want to read an excellent Holocaust book, there are hundreds, including The Book Thief by Zusak and Night by Wiesel.

Danielle Steel u najboljem izdanju.

This was the first Danielle Steel book that I have read in quite some time. It was recommened to me by a friend, and I have to admit, I loved it! I didn't want to put it down. It's a story about a German Jewish girl who falls madly in love with a Catholic French man during World War II. Both of their families banish them when they want to get married. As their lives progress and they have childen, they do not tell the children that they are 1/2 Jewish, considering the times and that all their lives they have been Catholic. As the Germans start deporting the Jews, the main character reaches out to her family only to be denied access to them by her father, who said she is dead to them.

It is a very touching and heartbreaking story of trying to make it in a time where you religious denomination meant life or death. I have been on quite a war kick lately and this just happened to fit right in.

There is also a hint of a love story for those of you who enjoy love stories. I myself love a good love story, but it's not a genre I could read every day.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested!

This was a good book. It was unlike any I have ever read or experienced before, I especially loved the beginning of the story. Apart from the ending it was the best part of the book in my opinion. Unfortunately after the first tragedy I was very upset because I was enjoying the book and I was unsure of what was going to happen next. The next part still turned out okay, it was a little boring at specific bits but the rest of it was great! Danielle Steel hurt me in ways that I didnt like at all throughout this book and I was hoping it wouldn't happen again.....it did. The adventure of it was good and exciting, although parts happened and I dont know what was the end result??? I still want to know. They didnt mention whether it was true. The ending was good, I like the way she ended the book and the couple chapters before.

The only thing I didnt like is that throughout the book there was huge time gaps in it, so it was one year and then it jumped to another year or it was April and suddenly the next line it is July? I was like what???? Confused, I was. It was still a good book though.

I had so many feelings during the book, happy sadness, frustration, annoyance, anger. I still got a happy ending at the end so I cant exactly complain. :/ :)

I have never read a Danielle Steel book before and was not sure what to expect besides a love story. This book went above and beyond my expectations. Being someone who enjoys reading about love and that time era, this was right up my alley. This book had me enthralled in it from the beginning (hard to do for most books that usually have to build into it). This book sure did pull at my heart strings and sent me on an intense emotional roller coaster. There were moments when it was so happy, moments where I cried, and moments where I was beyond angry. I would have to say that my only disappointment with this book was the untied ending to some of the main characters. I like to have closure with stories and this did not give me that and left me frustrated. I am glad though that there was a happy ending, something that looked dim throughout so much tragedy. I would highly recommend this book, but make sure that you are willing to devout time to reading it, once you start, it is hard to stop!

“Don’t hate anyone,” Beata said quietly. “It’s too much work. And it only poisons you.”

This story is about three things: Love (the purest and beautiful there is), Family (complicated and difficult, like most families) and War ( starting in the first til the second one).

I really apreciated this narrative, there was no slow motion action. The characters were very interesting and relatable and the main ideia, even not being exceptionally original, was pretty well achieved.

Echoes by Danielle Steel focuses on the effects of WWI and WWII on Beata and her daughter Amadea, with a helping of romance on the side. Beata was born a German Jew and during WWI she falls in love with a French Catholic nobleman. Long story short but both of their families hate each other and pretty much disown them; both Beata and her new husband, Antoine, were literally dead to them. Years go by and they have a couple of kids, and they're doing pretty well, but then Europe starts feeling the effects of Hitler's regime and Antoine dies in a freak horse riding accident. Amadea, the oldest daughter, decides she wants to become a nun after being inspired by Edith Stein's actions. Her family doesn't approve, but they let her go to follow her vocation (besides she has years before she takes her final vows). As the clock starts ticking closer to WWII, Amadea's heritage comes to light and she is deported to a concentration camp, but manages to escape, go into hiding, and become a member of the French Resistance. Guess what, she also meets a handsome British secret agent. She works with him multiple time on missions and surprise, surprise .

Before Echoes, I had never read a single Danielle Steel book and never really planned to either, but then, a friend of mine recommended this book to me. This friend had never read a single Danielle Steel book before either for the exact same reasons as me, so I borrowed it and gave it a shot. My bar wasn't set very high, but I liked Echoes more than I expected.

One of the things I most liked was the fact that the romance isn't exactly the main plot, but is woven into the story. I also liked the level of detail going into the scenes, but it wasn't so heavy that the reader gets bogged down; the story flowed well from point to point. And, finally, I really enjoyed the cover - who doesn't like a good steam engine?!

After reading, I really wished this could have been a story primarily focusing on Amadea's activity as a member of the French Resistance. I mean, I liked the background we got from the story but Steel packs so much into the book that each event becomes almost fleeting in the telling of the tale. Personally, I would have liked to have seen a story focusing heavily on a half-Jewish Carmelite nun working as an agent for the French Resistance during WWII.

One thing that I didn't understand about Amadea: how does she go from being a passionate and ambitious girl set on going to college and studying philosophy, psychology, and literature to wanting to become a mostly silent and submissive nun?? I can appreciate Amadea's desire to become a nun, but I felt like I missed something with her character.

One thing that really annoyed me about the ending aside from the predictability: we never find out what happens to Beata and Daphne!!! My guess would be that they died in a concentration camp, but it would have been nice to have a little closure after spending so much time with them!

I'm not sure if I'll be back for more by Danielle Steel in the future, but I can say I did like Echoes more than I initially expected.

This is the first Danielle Steel I've read in years. This probably wasn't the best one to reintroduce myself to the author, but it's been sitting on my TBR shelf for the longest time, and I've been eyeing the cover. I usually go into Steel's work blind, not having read the synopsis on the back or even knowing the protagonist's names. I love the way she builds out her characters. She spends the first several chapters fleshing them out and giving them extensive backstories- so when life-changing events begin to happen, you completely understand how they react and handle things. Beata, the main character for the first half of this book, is no different. She is headstrong and smart, and does what she wants. When she falls in love, she goes for it and doesn't look back. I loved her story- all of her ups, and her eventual downs. Beata and Antoine's story was beautiful and tragic, and my heart was full, and yet broken for them.
I was not prepared for the second half of this book, which quickly delved into convent life, concentration camps and resistance fighting. We simply stopped following Beata, and the attention swapped to Amadea. It felt awfully disjointed- almost as though they were two short stories just stitched together. We were never told what happened to Beata and Daphne. We can surely guess, but there is no closure there at all, and it's frustrating.
It was good, but just not enough for me. The story should have been longer.

I have never read a Danielle Steele book before and never will again! Her writting style is that equivelent of a 6 grade reading level! It feels like she is trying to introduce the book over and over and over again! She repeats everything ( assuming you were going to forget what you just read on the previous page, of course!) and her plot was weak and predictable. I found this to be an extremly fast read, however I couldn't wait to get through it because the writting style was so incrediably annoying! I think that the story would have be great if she didn't constantly repeat herself, or possibly another writter took on the story and wrote the book instead! I can say this that was good about the book though, there was at least a relatively happy ending. As happy as one can be for a war time novel.

Oh I have opinions. I picked this book up because it was advertised as historical fiction-ish. The first 180 pages were absolutely grating to read. Like nails on a chalk board. It was such a cliche love story and it made me sick. Love at first sight, pretty but smart, shunned by families because of love. It was awful. 0/5. Then over halfway through we FINALLY get into WWII material. I could stomach this part, however it was so poorly written and redundant. It made the female character seem so spineless and wishywashy when I know that’s not how she was meant to come off. I don’t know which of Danielle Steele’s ghost writers wrote this but they should consider a different profession.

Really liked this one from the beginning, I loved Beata and Antoine’s story and then after his death Beata’s mother making contact again. Beata and Daphne get taken away by the SS, and from there we follow Amadea as she eventually gets caught and taken to Thereseinstadt which was all interesting as well. The story was engaging the whole way through, even with the slightly predictable ending but no complaints there really.
If I’m honest, I think the ending was rushed. I understand getting across the message that so many lives were taken and disappeared in the holocaust, but the fact that we didn’t learn anything about what happened to Beata and Daphne doesn’t seem right since we followed Beata for half the book before that point. I didn’t like the writing style in the sense that I found there was a lot of repetition to really drill certain points in, which I didn’t appreciate but saw past because I enjoyed the story. Also a little frustrating how often we’re reminded that every man Amadea interacted with fell in love with her - she was beautiful and they were all shocked that she was a nun, we get it😂 but again I could look past that.
I also just wish there was a bit more packing out in details, for example Amadea clearly loved Jean Yves but we didn’t get to learn much about him and their time together, it was all very fleeting and sometimes we were skipping over half a year in about two sentences.

Overall, I did really like the story and the history involved, but it did feel rushed in parts and I feel we were owed more information at the end about the outcome and what actually happened to the people that we spent the first half of the book with

My library was having a "Danielle Steel March Madness" that was quite fun, so I thought I'd try one of her books. It took me quite a while to get into this, but once I did I quite liked the characters Beata and Antoine. They meet in Switzerland during the first World War. Beata is a German Jew and Antoine is a French Cathoic. Predictably, their families don't approve of their romance and trouble ensues. I really enjoyed the setting and characters during this time in the book, however the second half of the book moves to the second World War and focuses on their daughter, Armeada. I had a hard time liking the characters in the second half of the book; it wasn't that they were unlikable, just that I didn't find anything special about them.

I had fun reading a Danielle Steel novel, but I'm not sure I'll be picking up another one anytime soon. After a co-worker mentioned that she was a repetitive writer I began to notice it. She rewords the same information over and over. It didn't bother me a lot, but I could see that it was a distinct style she has that could become irritating.

Reader Advisory-no language and all physical relationships are glossed over/have no details.

I was surprised by scornful reviews, as I believe there should be adult-interest books on many reading levels. All adult readers did not have the same advantages, so there are many levels of adult reading ability. I am a bit of a grammarian, often correcting mistakes in my personal books, but I did not find mistakes in this book. Perhaps those reviewers were having a bad day.

This was a good book, covering bits of WWI and WWII, with many interesting twists. I was intrigued by the elder daughter Amadea becoming a nun, not knowing she was half-Jewish, then having to go into hiding to protect the church. Switching back to the WWI story, the insights into a affluent Jewish family were quite interesting to me, with bits reminding me of Downton Abbey.

My only complaints are the cover and the name. I can't recall a time in the novel when three women gaze at a train, nor could I connect the title to the book's content. This book was much better than the cover though.

Here's my confession. I am FASCINATED by Danielle Steel. I think her books are exactly the same story over and over with very slight changes in location and character names. They're absolute garbage and I hate them, but I can't stop reading them. I don't know why. They're not guilty pleasure books because I get no pleasure from reading them, but read them I do. At least I have never purchased a copy, thus not contributing even a penny to the psycho writer.

Anyway, this book (as usual) had a war, an impossible love story that overcame all odds, one (at least) partner dying young, an extremely religious woman who abandons her vocation for love, a miraculous healing and a gabillion children. Typical Steel, not worth your time, not worth my time, I read it anyway, I hate myself.

I liked the story at first almost lost interest in the middle to the point of not reading it anymore, then picked back up and liked it again. first half of the book i enjoyed the story, then in the middle like she lost her train of thought of what she was writing and just stated history facts till she could get back on track on what she wanted the story to be.... wasn't my altime favorite book but it was good

When I requested this from the library I thought it was a new book by Danielle Steel. Imagine my surprise when I picked up a paperback copy of this book from 1997! I've read all of this author's books, but since it's been in print for 25 years I did not remember it. What a treasure! A little romance with a little historical fiction made for an amazing, heartbreaking, heartwarming story! 9 out of 10.

OK to poor. I did not like that the story was divided into two. Would have like to have continued to follow the mother as the main character or both the mother and the two daughters. What happened to them, mom and youngest daughter (besides the obvious).
