A great book about the different theories of counseling and the applications of each theory. I enjoyed this book a lot for my first quarter of grad school!

Needs more interventions for brief solution focused therapy. But other than that, it was informative.

I haven't read any other psychotherapy textbook so I don't have much to compare it to.

The content of this book is solid and so is the organization. The use of a single case study approached from all of the perspectives was helpful to understand specifically where different schools of thought differ in conceptualization and treatment of a problem. The cross cultural considerations and limitations of each theory was especially useful and good to have. My main problem was that there were few visual breakdowns and charts to better visualize where each school of thought diverges in understanding of etiology and treatment methodology. Ideally, an introductory textbook would have better formatting and visual aids. Ultimately, this textbook has helped me to have a firm grasp on the various approaches to psychotherapy and I appreciate that.

The 5th edition :
Smooth read. Broken down chapters by brief history of theory, background info., related research, major construct details, application overview, goals of theory, the process of change, traditional intervention strategies, brief intervention strategies, cross cultural considerations, limitations, a summary chart and even a case study !

As you can see, very thorough!
