One man wants her heart. The other wants her dead...
Holding Out for a Hero, Book 1
Eleanor Owen needs to get out of Chicago and quick. It's not that she doesn't want to obey the subpoena to testify against her drug-trafficking ex-boyfriend. It's making it to the witness stand alive, should a dirty cop make good on his threats.
Tiny, remote Wyattville, Oregon, looks like the perfect place to disappear, but it's hard to blend into the woodwork when one of the town's infamous namesakes sends her heart racing. Worse, Mr. Tall, Hot and Packing is the town sheriff, which means she should stay as far away from him as possible.
Tyson Wyatt is positive the sexy new girl in town is hiding something. Question is, what? He vows to feel out her secrets--including what she feels like beneath him. Preferably naked. Until then, he's not buying the story she's selling.
Their chemistry is sheet-melting hot, and Ellie realizes much too late that the man with the badge is as dangerous to her heart as her ex is to her life...
Warning: A city girl on the run, and a small-town sheriff set to seduce. Explicit sex. Dirty talk. A hint of danger. Oral sex with a cupcake.

This was a pretty hot, easy-to-read short story that I read in a couple of hours...shhh!...while bored at work.:)
Going Down is the first book in the Holding Out For A Hero series about the three Wyatt brothers from tiny Wyattville, Oregon. This story is about the middle brother, 30-ish, blonde-haired, blue-eyed, incredibly tall, flirty, dirty-talker local Sheriff Tyson Wyatt.
Eleanor Owens is a petite, black haired, hazel-eyed 26 year old yoga teacher from Chicago. She's on the run after being served a subpoena to testify at the trial of her abusive, drug-traffiking ex-boyfriend. Afraid of testifying due to some overt threats to her life made by a crooked Chicago cop who's involved up to his eyeballs, Ellie thinks she needs a place to hide out until the trial is over. What better place than out-of-the-way Wyattville, Oregon?
When Sheriff Tyson Wyatt decides it's time to pay a neighborly visit to the town's newest resident, Ellie sees his patrol car in her driveway and panics. How did they find her? She takes off running, and naturally Tyson pursues her--saving her from falling over a cliff in the process. Naturally after rolling around on the ground with her, he's intrigued by her soft form, her beauty, and the fact that she ran from him. What is she hiding?
Ellie tells a little fib about her identity (decides to pass herself off as her waitress cousin from Brooklyn), but Ty is onto her. He can see that she's skittish around him, knows she's holding something back, and is determined to win her trust. He knows they have some chemistry brewing, and invites himself over for dinner. (This guy moves fast). Things heat up and soon they're groping each other, only to be interrupted by the call of duty before things can go all the way. Drat!
Not one to give up, Ty invites the reluctant Ellie to spend the day with him exploring the quaint town. They meet his two brothers, visit town hang-out Kate's Cakes (where they indulge in some naughty talk over some cupcakes), and end up at a barbeque at his parent's house. Everyone is warm and welcoming to Ellie (apparently she's not used to this in her life), and she has a great time. By the end of the day, Ty and Ellie just want to get back to her place and finish what they started. They make it as far as the porch...whew...and continue inside...Hot. Lots of begging and pleading and let's just say Ty is the master of dirty talk. Ty is totally smitten with Ellie (as she is with him), but then gets a clue about what she's hiding from him. Now what? Will Ellie trust Tyson enough to come clean and let him protect her?
This was a simple enough plot. You knew it was only a matter of time before things came crashing down on Ellie. The only question was would she stand and fight or continue to run. Luckily she had Tyson in her corner, who believed in her enough (and in them as a couple) to want to help her.
Ellie and Tyson were red hot together, and like I said before, Sheriff Wyatt excelled in Dirty-Talk 101. Nothing too out of the ordinary or kinky here, but plenty of steam.
I also enjoyed a lot of the details that Shelli Stevens provided--the look at the town, the introduction of the parents and brothers Todd the firefighter and Trevor the military man (who each get a story) and the women who loove them--lots of good stuff to look forward to in future books Command and Control and Flash Point.
"Going Down" has a nice balance of romance, heat, and suspense and sure makes it easy to kill a couple of hours reading. After finishing this one, I immediately ordered Command and Control. There's just something about a dark and withdrawn military hero... 4 stars
on the run from testifying against her ex-boyfriend being charged with drug trafficking...oh ya, a crooked cop has threatened her life.
I really liked the story, and was able to read it in an afternoon. I didn't feel 'rushed' or 'jipped' with the stories content, characters, or with the ending.
What a nice find! Going to start the second book... like NOW!
I had actually read this before, but decided to kill some time by reading it again. Then realized I hadn't added it to GR.
The story is what you'd come to expect from Shelli Stevens. Not too deep, super steamy, mild drama. And it works most of the time, so keep on keepin' on, girl.
The issue I have with this particular story is Ellie running away from testifying in court. If the bad guy goes free because she can't man up and be an adult, that's... not good? That's not a character I can sympathize with. Hide until you're required to show up? Sure. Approach a lawyer that can't possibly be attached to the bad guy? Yup. But you don't run like a bitch and refuse to testify at all. I hated that.
Also, the set up of the 'climax', which I will hide behind spoilers is so predictable, it's almost painful. And it's not that I remember reading it before, because I didn't remember this part at all.
It was so predictable. I've read this same scene in like 5 other books. Am I the only person that looks through the god damn peephole before opening a hotel door? And guess what? People aren't trying to kill me. I don't even have a reason to be suspicious of somebody coming to my door, but I still fucking check.
Ladies... I'm talkin' to you. Don't get murdered.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
"Sugar orgasm?" "Definetly, sweet and moist. But not quite as decadent as that taste of your pussy I ducked off my finger last night."
Short STEAMY fast easy read, big town girl hiding out in a small town, Ellie managed to catch the eye of Tyson, the town sheriff. Pretty much didn't deviate from the description.
The Good, The Bad, and Everything Else: I love me some small town lovin' and a man in uniform revs my engine. For the most part this novella fit that bill. What I didn't like was the entire relationship was built on hot sex and when the I Love You's happened it didn't feel authentic. The suspense started out well but fizzled right after the beginning and was concluded quickly at the end with lies and sex filling up the middle. Not to mention the glaringly obvious hotel "suspenseful" scene that really pushed Ellie into the TSTL category. I mean who doesn't look through the peephole when someone knocks on your hotel door? WTF girl?!?! You deserved to be dead just for that!
Tyson's character was too domineering and could not get past his penis to really give this book depth. He also got all butt hurt when he found out Ellie was lying to him about who she was and that she was on the run. Well Ty, your powers of deduction are less than impressive. The woman took one look at you when you first pulled up to her rental property and she took off running (literally out the backdoor and into the woods). He chased after her and had to rescue her from almost running off the cliff she didn't know was there by tackling her. And so, begins Ty thinking with his little brain because he was then laying on top of her and despite her suspicious behavior, he absolutely wanted her sexy body.
Despite the fact that I love small town law enforcement romances I kind of like the deputy (or sheriff in this book's case) to be more guy next door (like Levi Cooper in Kristan Higgins's The Best Man from her Blue Heron series) rather than who Ty turned out to be (a dirty talking, little brain thinking, Alphatool.) Oh, sure he really wasn't a completely terrible character but not one anywhere close to some of my Romantic Suspense favorites and he definitely won't make it into my all-male harem.
In a Nutshell: Ok, so as much as it sounds like I hated this book I really didn't. It was a quick read and it fit into a challenge I was doing. Also, it was a kindle freebie at one point, and I always look at those as you get what you pay for. With that in mind there are other Wyatt brothers books to read and if I can get them for free, I'll eventually read them.
I always like the premise when someone, whether it’s the H/h is trying to hide their true identity for whatever reason. In Going Down Ellie/Eleanor Owens is afraid for her life, doesn’t know who she can trust and she certainly doesn’t trust the law. You know it’s only a matter of time before the truth comes out and it’s always great to see how the story plays out.
Yoga instructor Ellie is a grand jury witness supposed to testify against her ex-boyfriend for his drug trafficking crimes. She's down with the plan until she gets threatened by one of Chicago’s "finest" boys in blue and then she heads for the hills - or Wyattville Oregon. Where better to hide out and lay low than in Hicksville until the trial is over. It’s a great plan til the Po-po in the form of Travis Wyatt comes a calling - even if it is just an innocent, friendly visit. First rule of thumb when hiding out...NEVER run from the Police - it instantly makes you look guilty and raises their suspicions.
Travis and Ellie spark as hot as firecrackers together right from the start. Yes Ellie is running away and Travis is in pursuit, but he does manage to stop her from going ass over tea kettle off the side of a cliff. She isn’t getting away from him that easy!
Wyattville is a small town and if there was a prince, then it would be Travis and his family is the closest thing to royalty Wyattville has. And the studly quotient is pretty high too. Besides Travis, he has two equally hot and gorgeous brothers Todd and Trevor.
The relationship between Travis and Ellie escalates very quickly and it’s only a few days before they are declaring their lust...errr love for one another. They certainly had lots of chemistry and since this is a relatively shorter story - things move at a fast pace. I guess it’s easier to forget your mistrust of the police...especially when he’s got his hand down your pants.
When the inevitable happens and Travis discovers Ellie’s true identity, he proves to Ellie that he is trustworthy and actually goes above and beyond to stand by his woman.
Vanilla to Red Velvet in under 10 seconds baby! Eating cupcakes has never been as erotic as eating the ones from Katie’s Cakes - I will never be able to look at a cupcake the same way again...Yum.
I will definitely be checking out the stories of playful fire-fighter Todd and the darker side of Trevor and their lady loves.
The series title "Holding Out for a Hero" mislead me a bit (my bad). It was recommended in the military/special ops, government, alpha male romantic suspense venue, or in this case of the Wyatt brothers: sheriff, military, firefighter, a type of romantic suspense. This is a romance novel plain and simple. Although I'm not a big fan of pure romance novels as I think there're too light and often times lame with laugh out loud eye rolling ridiculous sex scenes (come on...who talks like that? Alpha males...Really??) this one was a decent read as far as romance novels go.I'm sure if your a fan of such, a reader would enjoy this one. Its quick easy reading, finished it in an evenings reading, and I'll finish the next 2 books of this trilogy simply because I'm curious if the other stories might bring in a bit more suspense. Shelli Stevens is a new author for me. So for a romance novel I'd give it 3 stars, this is just not my niche.
Subpoened to testify againist her ex-boyfriend and bieng threatened by a dirty cop was enough to have Eleanor Owen running clear across the country to Wyattsville, Oregon in hiding. Eleanor just wants to keep her head down and to herself, when the town sheriff arrives at her doorstep she is ready to bolt again.
Tyson Wyatt knows Eleanor is hiding something, every instinct tells him to investigate as well as charm the socks off of her and make her his.
Thought this was a fun read, the first in the Holding Out for a Hero series. Had a couple hmmm moments but overall very good.
Major instalove in this one. It's a very short book and the h and H fall in love in less than a week. Just very cheesy and not at all believable and extremely rushed.
I'm not really one for suspense romances, but this one wasn't too bad. Although, to be honest, it wasn't really much of a suspense anyway.
The story and writing were fine, but I did have issues with the characters. The MCs definitely fall in love ridiculously fast, so there's not much relationship building at all. Tyson falls on the jerk side of alpha more than seemed to fit his character. And Ellie is a vapid pixie-dream girl stereotype. No real substance, so not much to like. And I really hate infantilizing adult women in order to make them seem charming. That scene where she just has to run into the ocean?
This could just be due to the length of the book. Perhaps with more pages, the author could have made the characters a bit more.
Overall, it was good enough that I'll read more of the series, but I won't come back to this particular book for a reread.
I'm playing BINGO, and the square is "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan. The song is sung from the perspective of a Sherriff.
In this book, Sherriff Tyson Wyatt' spidey senses are tingling when new girl Ellie rolls into town. Something isn't quite right and he wants to get to the bottom of it. Ellie, however, needs this Sherriff to leave her alone and forget she exists, because she's literally on the run from the everyone...legal and illegal in Chicago. Will he figure it out in time to help her? Or will his "help" just make it worse?
This was a quick, medium spice, snarky book with a nice lead-in for the next book....the BROTHER!
Shelli Stevens can be counted on for great stories! I always find myself loving her characters and the only problem is that the books come to an end when you are enjoying the story so much you aren’t ready to be done! The perfect amount of steam and heat intermixed with wit and humor! Definitely on my favorite authors list and she never disappoints! Highly recommend!
I love Shelli and her books. I really liked this one. When I bought it, I didn't realize it was a short story but it is okay! Tyson and Ellie are perfect for each other; I loved them both. Together they are explosive.
i enjoy a good romantic mystery that flows and author Shelli Stevens always givens us good books that allows me to move into the storyline and try to figure out what is happening alongside the characters. Ellie is hiding from herself as well as the bad guys who want to keep her from going to court against her ex boyfriend. Trevor is the good guy and is a cop in the new town. The problem is not Trevor per say but the cops in the old town were bad "coppers" and not to trusted. So can Ellie trust Trevor? Until she knows she is hiding and undercover and that. I love Trevors family and can not wait to read their stories. One thing I would like to point out is that this is a re-release of book that author Shelli Stevens published before with another publisher. Some folks want to know this.
This was a pretty good story. I liked Ellie and Tyson and the story was very good for it's length as long as your ok with an insta-love story. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough that I'm likely to read more of her work in the future.
Ellie is a yoga instructor from Chicago. She used to date a guy that ended up being a drug dealer. He was also abusive and made it clear she's face reprisals if she left him so when he went to jail she was happy. Ellie became less happy when she's delivered a subpoena to testify against him and gets threatened with death by a dirty cop that worked for her ex within minutes of the delivery. Fearing certain death if she stayed, Ellie cashed out her savings and found a small town on the west coast to hide in for a few months.
Tyson is the sheriff in Wyattville, OR. He grew up there but did spend some time Seattle as a cop before deciding her missed his home and moving back. He's been looking to settle down but hasn't met the right woman. That all changes soon after he meets Ellie.
Ellie was looking to stay under the radar while in her retreat but that all gets spoiled pretty quickly. Tyson hears about the new person that's rented out a place and since he lives near, he decides to stop in and welcome the newcomer. Unfortunately he goes in uniform and it freaks Ellie out because she thinks he's there to arrest her for leaving instead of testifying. She goes running and almost kills herself and Tyson ends up saving her. She makes up a lame story about why she ran and gave her cousin's name (which is close enough to hers to allow her to still use the nickname Ellie) so that when Tyson runs her name it comes up (basically) clean.
Tyson knows something is going on with Ellie but he's strongly attracted to her as well. He finally decides that she fears something and isn't a bad guy and tries to gain her trust and get her to tell him the truth. Ellie knows getting involved with Tyson isn't a good idea but she has trouble fighting their mutual attraction as well. Her brain pretty much turns off when he touches her and she finds she trusts him even though she isn't sure if it's a good idea. They quickly fall in to bed and fall for each other despite the secrets between them. Tyson is a good cop and figures things out and there's some drama and a bit of danger for the couple to get past. Thankfully everything turns out alright and Tyson and Ellie end the story starting on their HEA.
This was a pretty enjoyable story. The character were likable (including the secondary characters) and the story was well done for it's length. Because it was short, it was kind of necessary that it was an insta-love story and outside of that part seeming a bit hurried I really liked the story. I'm planning to read more of the series. I'd recommend this story. :D
I still don't remember how I found this book, but the truth is I don't care, the point is It's great!.
Ellie is a yoga instructor from Chicago who needs to skip town, avoiding to testify in court against his ex, who's been charged with drug trafficking. So she ends in the picturesque town of Wyattsville, Oregon, where she meets the hot sheriff in town, Tyson Wyatt. So the first encounter is pretty much him running after her, since she has some issues with men in uniform, and things started to build between them pretty quickly.
Ellie's body stirred with awareness at his proximity, her nipples tightening beneath her tank top. She licked her lips, acutely aware of the thin cotton covering her bare breasts.
"How long do you plan on being in town?" he asked softly, his gaze on her mouth.
Her heart thumped wildly and she had the craziest urge to lean forward and press her mouth against his.
"Probably just a couple of months. Getting out of the city for the summer..."
"Well then, Ellie," he murmured. "I have a feeling we'll be seeing each other again real soon. So you'd better get over that distrust of law enforcement bit."
Her knees almost buckled when he stepped away without touching her. Disappointment swept through her. You're an idiot. Being disappointed that a cop you don't know didn't kiss you?
"I'll, um, work on it." She cleared her throat. "Was there a reason you dropped by in the first place?"
"Just wanted to welcome you to Wyattville and introduce myself." He laughed and shook his head. "Damn, guess I forgot to do both of those, now didn't I? The name's Tyson Wyatt and welcome to town."
So the book is short, basically it focus on how the met, they need to trust each other, specially Ellie and yes, how the fall into each other, Oh and there are great sex scenes too, so what's not to like!

This book cover is hot. Eleanor Owens is afraid for her life, doesn't know who she can trust and she certainly doesn't trust the police. Ellie is a grand jury witness supposed to testify against her ex-boyfriend for his drug trafficking crimes. She's ok with the plan until she gets threatened by a Chicago police officer so she heads to Wyattville Oregon. It's a great plan until meets sheriff Travis Wyatt. When Eleanor sees the cop car pull in the driveway of her house she cannot believe they have found her so soon running out the back door into the wooded area with a cop hot on her tail he soon catches her and that is her first introduction to Tyson Wyatt she lies to him why she ran her name and occupation. But Tyson knows she is hiding something and is determined to find out. There is an immediate attraction between them and Tyson invites himself to dinner then he takes her sightseeing the next day. Very quickly they are becoming close, but Eleanor worries what will happen when Tyson discovers the truth about her. This was a pretty good story the sex scenes were good I just wish the story was longer. This was my first time reading Ms. Steven's work the book was well written I am looking forward to reading more of this series.
This is something that Ellie Owens needs, a place to hide. She thought she found love with James but he was just a dirty guy with bad a trick. Now because of him she’s on the run and doesn’t need a man in her life right now. Especially a man of the law and Tyson Wyatt is definitely one sex-on-a stick sheriff making her libido skyrocket.
Shelli Stevens sure knows how to create one gorgeous, virile and all protective guy in Sheriff Wyatt. This guy definitely protects his woman and gives them all the loving they need, yet somehow Ellie is different from other women. He knows she’s hiding something and he’s determined to find out but is afraid of the truth. Ms. Stevens did an awesome job of showing how persuasive he can be without deflating his passionate when right woman comes along.
Going Down is comedy and passion all rolled up into one fantastic story. Even Tyson’s brother’s are a hoot to read. Ms. Stevens definitely has a way with the storyline being fun and passionate yet showing us there’s more to come. Loved it.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this book. I liked Tyson, his afmily, and the small town feel of the book. I had a moment's pause early on where it felt as though Tyson was using his position as sheriff to impose sex on Ellie, but I did'nt see it again and that particular scene didn't play out that way either.
My biggest complaint with the book was that they became engaged after about 2 weeks. It was awfully fast (although my own parents became engaged after 1 week, so I don't understand my issue with this, but there it is).
But I did feel the connection, and felt Ellie begin to create relationships around town, do I let it all go for the most part. Tyson was really engaging, and Ellie was justified in her secrecy, given the short time frame of the book.
I think much of my problem is with the short format. I don't read a lot of novellas, mostly because I want the long drawn out build up to a relationship. But boy howdy, am I looking forward to Tyson's brothers' stories. Even if they're also novellas.
4.25 out of 5. Fear is one of those emotions that can really wreck havoc with the human body, mind, and spirit. When it becomes a routine "place" in one's life, it effects changes that are truly mind boggling. The heroine in this tale is running for her life from abuse in her one-on-one relationship as well as from a federal supoena as a critical witness against the same man. Add in the fact that the local sheriff--someone else in law enforcement--becomes attracted to her almost as soon as she gets to town. This is another captivating story from a very good writer and one that has quickly become one of my favorites. I recently read Book 2 in this series and had to come back and read Books 1 and 3. The people are delightful and the community is one I think many of us would find to be a really nice place to live. It is romantic but tense, with characters who are living on the edge of the best that life can give and trying so hard to connect. But secrets -- aren't they something? -- keep interfering. Just a really great read!
It's a cute fluffy mommy porn-lite piece, and who doesn't need to be rescued every now and then, especially by a hot cop. I mean it was a nice short, easy read. Nothing too serious or emotional. The writing was 3rd person. The story line was easy to follow with enough detail to keep interesting, but help you get to know & like the secondary characters (which the next books focus on) but not super intense plot wise. The characters were likeable with great chemistry. The attraction between them was quick and intense. The love scenes were detailed and steamy. And what can I say, I love me a hero. I easily read the first 3 books within a matter of 36hrs between work/errands. It was interesting enough & moved along so I didn't want to put it down, but it wasn't so involved that I had to be wrapped up in it. Overall, awesome. Just what I wanted after finishing some more emotional cowboy dramas lol. Thanks to all of you who write honest reviews so I know what I'm getting before I buy it. Appreciate it!
I normally do not like the typical contemporary romance books, and that is what this basically is. But this one was cute and I liked Tyson and Ellie, as well as the secondary characters. My only issue was the ending where Ellie seems to all of a sudden be ok with dealing with all that she was running from to begin with. I was left thinking, why didn't you just do that from the get go if it is all so easy now? I understand that Tyson must make her feel safe and she trusts him, even though that point is not stressed and barely noted at all. But he finds out her deep dark secret, and has Megen show up unannounced and Ellie just accepts it and starts spilling and agreeing to go back to Chicago. And then the hotel scene is very cliche, as in, horror movie - "don't go in the basement", cliche. Overall, it was a quick, easy, cute read with some hot sex scenes thrown in. I plan to read the other two brothers' stories. I am interested to see what happened to break up Megan and Trevor.
If you've read and enjoyed Lauren Dane's 'Chase Brothers' series, then you will probably like this book as well. It's got small town charm with big family dynamics (I love big families) so you get to see how the hero and heroine interact with more than just each other. There's also some suspense written in such a way that you can't predict if or when the bad guy is going to show up and where.
I totally enjoyed this book as a quick read, but would have absolutely LOVED it a bit more drawn out to give the two main squeezes more tension and time to work up to the humpin' *repeat after me, humpin' is good...humpin' is good...*
