3 stars if this is the first book you read about LKY. There is no way this will hold up in the longer run.

The problem is Plate - he writes very well, so he embeds the interview in descriptions, which make the interview read almost like a novel. This does make for an engaging and easy read, but often, however, the descriptions and digressions sound made up or inauthentic (such as noticing and interpreting brief gestures or facial expressions of LKY).

But the worst offense is unnecessary writing himself into the story (like the gratuitous if brief recollection of his father) and the overlong coda, in order to have the last word (and advertise his next books).

Where you are allowed to hear LKY, it is brilliant. And no, you don't have to agree with all his opinions, but people this worthy to listen to are so rare so we better pay attention.

The world lost a brilliant intellect and unique personality.

LKY's views, as always, are full of insights. Unfortunately this book is nothing more than a long interview and would have made better reading if it had been presented as a simple Q&A transcript. The author does not value-add much here--he intrudes into the narrative with passages of personal ruminations which only slow down an otherwise engaging conversation. Fans of LKY who have read his two-volume memoir can give this book a miss. It doesn't reveal anything new that we do not know about this brilliant man.

Đây là một quyển sách mà mình ước là mình đã được đọc sớm hơn, vì biết đâu nó đã giúp ích cho mình trong những năm tháng trước.
Cuộc phỏng vấn kéo dài 2 ngày làm cho mình thấy choáng ngợp trước tầm nhìn cũng như óc phân tích của Lý Quang Diệu. Mà sách lại không hề khó đọc, ngẫm nghĩ một tí sẽ thấy được lý do vì sao Singapore có thể phát triển như vậy.
Cuộc phỏng vấn hai người này còn có những suy nghĩ riêng của tác giả, được lồng ghép ngay tại từng thời điểm nên mình có cảm giác nó rất thật.
Và bên cạnh Lý Quang Diệu, mình còn được tìm hiểu thêm những sự kiện chính trị cũng như những con người có tầm ảnh hưởng đến cả một khu vực thậm chí là thế giới.
Dài dòng vậy thôi chứ tóm gọn lại là quyển này nên đọc, và phải đọc nếu bạn cũng có một khát khao to lớn nào đó.

Useless book. The book is more about Tom Plate encountering LKY than what LKY is actually saying. There are too many casual asides and personal anecdotes. the author is too flattered to be in Lky's presence to make any comprehensive analysis or reading. There are better ways to learn abt LKY. This book is a gimmick.

When I picked this book up, I hoped it would be a professional interview, which contain interviewee's viewpoints and the interviewer's sharp political questions and analyses.

It do provide a lot of useful information that worth reading. Such as Lee Kuan Yew's opinions, reasons why he did what he did, some historical and political facts, Lee Kuan Yew's discussion with other countries' leaders, relationships between Singapore and China, America, Indonesia, Malaysia...

I would give the book 4 stars, but:
The interview questions are not really good. They are unnecessarily long, not straight to the point, and do not support the previous one to dig into the current topic. Many were just left without a proper answer or conclusion.
The writing style made the book less reliable. Instead of writing the book in Question and answer form, the author wrote it by his own words. Instead of quoting Lee Kuan Yew's words, he interpreted into "I think this is what he meant"... The author's personal stories, his joke, flatteries, explanations and assumptions are also unnecessary.
I think Lee Kuan Yew knows what he is doing. He has reasons for everything he did and his viewpoints. He probably won't afraid of criticism, or challenging questions, which only cause him give more specific opinions and reaffirms his decisions. He deserves a bolder inteviewer and sharper questions.

It can be said that Lee Kuan Yew is the only idol in my life until now. To me, every single decision he made is so wise, reasonable, practical, thoughtful, effective yet straightforward. He and his boards always acted for the common good of his nation. There was no place for personal self-interest. If our beloved country had had just a leader like him, everything would have been so different.

Một Lý Quang Diệu 86 tuổi, trên cái nền triết lý của Plato và Machiavelli với lớp lót của Khổng Giáo được Tom Plate khắc họa trong cuốn sách này. Một cuốn sách không câu nệ, không né tránh, cũng không tâng bốc về một trong những con người quản lý tài giỏi nhất mà Đông Nam Á từng sản sinh.

Với những cái nhìn thức thời về địa chính trị, kinh tế, đặc biệt là về Trung Quốc, với một Singapore "hoàn hảo" - một Utopia trong mơ với bất cứ quốc gia nào, điều đó đã đủ nói lên cái tài và cái tầm của ông Lý.

Để phỏng vấn ông Lý Quang Diệu, Tom Plate đã phải nghiên cứu thế nào? Đọc bao nhiêu cuốn sách? Review bao nhiêu bài báo tôi không biết, chỉ biết rằng đối đầu với một trí tuệ như vậy không hề đơn giản, và nếu như người hỏi là người kém hiểu biết, lập tức sẽ bị out chỉ trong vòng vài nốt nhạc.

Các lãnh đạo nên tìm đọc cuốn sách này. Những kẻ ưa tranh cãi về dân chủ, phổ thông đầu phiếu, độc tài cũng rất nên đọc. Triết lý cuối cùng là luôn biết thay đổi, luôn mềm dẻo để đạt được điều mình muốn. Và làm lãnh đạo, việc đầu tiên là phải đặt quyền lợi của dân chúng lên đầu tiên và trước hết.

Những câu trả lời của Lý Quang Diệu luôn tuyệt vời và mang tính gợi mở suy nghĩ; chỉ riêng người phỏng vấn là Tom Plate hơi vô duyên và chưa đủ chuyên nghiệp, theo góc nhìn của mình.

Quyển sách dường như được viết theo cách bông đùa, không đủ tầm để miêu tả về một nhân vật như Lý Quang Diệu. Tác giả sách còn xen lẫn chuyện riêng (về bố, về bạn thân, về bản thân), một cách lạc lõng và có phần khoe khoang, vào những đoạn kể chuyện chung mà không có kết nối gì, chỉ như tán hươu tán vượn.

Một điều rất không hay là ngay từ đầu cuộc đối thoại, tác giả đã tự thể hiện những định kiến, góc nhìn hạn hẹp của mình, ví dụ rõ nhất là muốn định hình tính cách Lý Quang Diệu là cáo hay là nhím, và từ đó chỉ loay hoay phân tích cá nhân theo hướng này.

Các đối thoại cũng không theo dạng hỏi đáp liên tục mà bị xen vào bằng những nhận định, phân tích mang tính cá nhân và có phần định hướng riêng nào đó của tác giả. Lẽ ra phải để độc giả tự hiểu những lời của Lý Quang Diệu, còn phần nhận định diễn giải cá nhân thì nên để ở một phần tách riêng ra.

Các câu hỏi có phần rời rạc, không mạch lạc, không đủ sâu sắc, cộng thêm phần miêu tả về bản thân và những lời bình đôi khi chủ quan về người được phỏng vấn, làm cho hình ảnh về tác giả không hề chuyên nghiệp và thiếu sự tương tác tìm hiểu thật sự đối với nhân vật chính của cuộc đối thoại.

Mình dành 3/5 sao cho phần trả lời của ông Lý Quang Diệu và tiếc cuộc đối thoại không biết cách phát triển nội dung ấy hơn nữa.

Interesting and succinct dive into LKY’s brain based on the course of two very long interviews. I’ve been meaning to read LKY’s memoirs, the first volume has been on my shelf for three years now but they’re not small or easy to carry around. This has been a good taster. I enjoyed their conversations, I felt that Tom Plate was just filling in space sometimes because he wanted to write a book rather than just interview transcripts yet the interviews were the meat we were all there for. Sometimes his asides were useful but other times they were irritating and lasted too long.

He also made a comment which rubbed me the wrong way…

I can’t do it. Because I’m interested in the subject I found this book as an alternative to the huge autobiography by Mr.Lee himself. My interest carried me 1/3 of the way through but the style and author are insufferable. It’s like reading a podcast episode. I’m interested in the guest, a man of vision, a mover and shaker of world politics. Some level of commentary on the process of the interview would be ok. But it’s not like that. It’s as if you are watching this podcast as a video and every minute it pauses, the interviewer looks at the camera and makes some stupid comment as he forces the metaphor of the fox and the hedgehog on Lee Kuan Yew for the nth time.

Tôi đã liều lĩnh khi chọn review cuốn sách này trên Travelling Kat.

Lý do: cuốn sách này hẳn nhiên ko phải gout của phần đông bạn đọc của tôi. Bản thân chính tôi, trong một chiều Hà Nội mát mẻ, đi dạo trên phố Đinh Lễ cùng cô bạn thân, cũng ko chọn mua cuốn sách này. Bạn trai tôi chọn mua cuốn sách này cho anh. Một ngày hết sách nhẹ để mang theo và đọc trên máy bay, tôi mượn anh. Đây là một cuốn sách thể loại phỏng vấn mà nhân vật được phỏng vấn là một chính trị gia. Đó hẳn ko phải là lựa chọn hàng đầu của tôi.

Cuốn sách theo tôi trong khá nhiều chuyến bay. Nói thế để thấy đây chắc không phải cuốn sách bạn đọc được một lèo, đọc cho bằng hết ngay được. Với tôi nó như món bánh mặn: ăn chút ít khi đói lòng thì tuyệt nhưng không ăn nhiều được vì bứ. Nên để dành khi đói lại lôi ra ăn, lúc rất cần và hưởng được hết cái quý của món bánh!

Cuốn sách này đọc dồn dập, đọc một lèo sẽ bứ, theo đúng nghĩa đen: bứ thông tin, bứ lập luận vì mỗi đoạn văn là một thông tin hay lập luận, liên kết chặt chẽ với nhau. Không thừa đoạn nào. Tôi, hẳn nhiên, yêu thích và khâm phục cách viết này. Nhưng đồng thời tôi nhận ra, nếu tôi đọc cố, đầu tôi sẽ bứ và khi ấy, nếu tôi đọc lướt qua một đoạn nào thì đến đoạn sau sẽ lạc lối, không biết mình đang ở đâu, làm gì.

Sách có hai phần, là hai buổi chiều mà tác giả Tom Plate được sắp xếp để gặp Lý Quang Diệu, lúc đó đã 86 tuổi. Người được phỏng vấn rõ ràng xuất hiện với vẻ ngoài già yếu, mong manh nhưng trí tuệ, tư duy thì vẫn mạnh mẽ và dồi dào đến không tưởng.

Theo d��i cuộc nói chuyện của Tom Plate và Lý Quang Diệu, người đọc sẽ bị cuốn vào các chủ đề từ địa chính trị Thế giới, cách thức tư duy lãnh đạo làm nên hiện tượng Singapore đến mối quan hệ vợ - chồng, cha - con trai - con gái của gia đình họ Lý. Bạn sẽ được nghe lén một cuộc trao đổi của hai con người có tư duy lớn, chứng kiến cách dẫn dắt lẫn né tránh khôn ngoan, được suy diễn và có quan điểm của riêng mình từ việc nghe lén đó.

Tôi thích cách Tom Plate hỏi - khôn khéo và biết chừng. Đôi khi Tom biết tự trào với bạn đọc lẫn với Lý Quang Diệu để không khí cuộc gặp, cũng như không khí của những trang sách dễ thở hơn. Đôi khi Tom biết liệng lách kiểu "lườm rau gắp thịt" để đạt được thông tin ông khao khát nhưng không làm người bị hỏi xù lông (tôi hé lộ chút là Tom nghĩ nhân vật được hỏi có xu hướng hành xử giống một chú nhím theo cách thức phân loại nhân vật lịch sử vĩ đại của Isaiah Berlin).

Như cách Tom muốn khơi ra chủ đề về bà Kha Ngọc Chi, phu nhân của ông Lý, Tom hỏi ông Lý về cách ông rèn luyện việc viết lách. Thế là một cách tự nhiên, ông Lý nói về người vợ mà ông coi là có trí tuệ ngang tầm như ông, người dạy ông viết và diễn đạt một cách hiệu quả mà đơn giản. Rồi Tom hỏi ông về Bill Clinton, người mà ngay từ đầu cuộc phỏng vấn, ông Lý đã không giấu thái độ coi thường về vụ scandal tình ái. Ghép các câu chuyện tưởng như không liên quan và lớn lao kia lại, tôi thấy đọng lại là tình yêu, sự tôn kính lớn lao mà Lý Quang Diệu dành cho vợ mình. Không một từ ngữ diễm tình nào sánh được!

À tôi đã kể việc tiêu đề các chương đều là tên các bộ phim chưa nhỉ. Nội dung chương thường ít nhiều có liên tưởng đến nội dung bộ phim đó. Tôi thật sự rất thích cách viết này. Mà nếu trúng bộ phim nào bạn đã xem thì bạn sẽ càng thêm thích thú!

Cuốn sách cũng có những hạt sạn. Nhưng tôi không chắc tôi nên đổ tội cho ai về những hạt sạn đó: Tom, người dịch hay ai? Như tôi đã nói ngay từ đầu, mỗi đoạn của cuốn sách đều chứa đầy lập luận hay thông tin và liên kết chặt với đoạn sau. Thế nên, khi có 2 đoạn hay 2 lập luận bỗng nhiên ko liên quan, tôi có cảm giác có ít nhất một hay hai đoạn văn nào đó đã bị cắt bỏ thô bạo ở đây.

Nói chung, đây là một cuốn sách đáng đọc. Đó là cuốn sách động viên tôi mở rộng phạm vi nội dung lẫn thể loại khi chọn mua sách cho mình.

BOOK'S REVIEW - Conversation with Lee Kuan Yew
This morning, the weather in Pr is not good, It's cold and snow. What will I do in this boring Sunday? So, I grab a book to save a week-end seemly meaningless. This book's name is "Conversation with Lee Kuan Yew". And when I finished this book, I felt better and decided to write some word about it to share with all of you.
This book is the fruit of a conversation in two days between an American journalist Tom Plate with the former prime minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew. In this conversation, Tom talks with Lee Kuan Yew about a lot of subjects from the art of government in Singapore, the perspectives of Singapore and the world in the futur...to his personal life.
In history, Singapore was a part of Malay and under the British domination. When Japan attacked in Southeast Asia, the British left and Singapore had to face the challenge, either they had to rejoin to Malay or they will be independent with lots of difficulties. In the end, after a failed negotiation with Malay's government. Singapore proclaimed independence in 1965.
In the conversation, Lee Kuan Yew has presented how to transform Singapore from a poor country become one of the richest countries. It comes from the skill of government with the efficient method for example, whoever drops the chewing-gum in the way, they will be punished strictly or He doesn't care about how the world thinks about him, he just take care about how his people think about him. If his politic makes the life of Singapore citizen better, he will do it. It base on the national interest.
The book figured out also his characters, he doesn't like the flattering and frank, courageous and pragmatic. He ignores how do you do the thing, he just focuses on the result.
This book still has many things to which I can't go into detail, why don't you do it by yourself!!!

The book is a journal of consecutive two days of interviews.All the narratives left readers to a self-digging out and exploration for the insights which were sparking in those lines .The way the author advanced his interview was mostly based on Mr.LKY's responses to the questions he offered and he basically maintained an impartial tongue.

From what I have read , I would extrapolate three deductions that were not directly reflected in this book and I want to test their validation through other works I would read in the days to come.

First speculation : Singapore is and still will be of great importance for China at least in the next few decades. It would be preposterous and historical for any Chinese leaders to think they have been powerful enough to ignore or underestimate Singapore's role in ASEAN or in sino-US relations. And as far as I know,the current Chinese goverment is wise enough not to commit such myopic strategic blunders.

Second, Singapore will still be striking balances among different powers and adjust its policies flexibly and adroitly in its own favor. The maximum of its National Interests is the paramount principle as any other nation. Its policy will remain relativity tame and not go extremes,which is a reflection of Eastern wisdom in its cultures.

Third, It may provoke US or China occasionally for its own calculation. But the essence of its self-position and propensity mainly prone to western world rather than Eastern one. Based on Singapore's international status, all the powers around will persist to scramble for its influence rather than alien it. Singapore knows this and will continue to cultivate and amplify this tact.

In his candid interviews with author Tom Plate, Lee Kuan Yew has made it very clear what he thinks about Malays. He thinks that Malays are “not as hardworking and capable as other races” and that Malays are a race that should not breed with other go-getting people (page 53).

Such conviction in negative eugenics and blatant racism may shock the casual observer. But such is this man Lee Kuan Yew, calculative, ruthlessly pragmatic and cares for very little for political correctness. Sometimes I cannot help but wonder how much such institutionalised forms of racism have trickled down and endured throughout the bureaucracy here.

This and other previously undocumented thoughts of former “Minister Mentor” can be found in Conversations with Lee Kuan Yew - Citizen Singapore : How to Build a Nation. Some of these revelations have recently been put under spotlight by the Western media - such as his previously unknown admiration for President Carter. Others, like his views on Malays, have long been suspected but never been fully revealed in the manner that Tom Plate has written here.

Th rest of the book comes across as a casual transcript rather than a proper documentary. Conversations with Lee Kuan Yew would have been an enjoyable read if the author had not made a third of the book about himself, like how he has put on weight and how he has the metabolism of a hummingbird.

While LKYs comments and thoughts are interesting to read the book is full of reflections and opinions of Plate himself reading which did not seem very interesting to me. Plate seems to be in awe with LKY and this is obvious throughout the book.Fareed Zakaria's renown interview is much more illustrative of Kuan Yew's points than this entire book which seems to borrow a lot from it. It would have been much better should Plate kept his views and meditations limited and focused more on LKYs approach to publuc policy, trade, politics, and diplomacy, after all this is why most people would pick this book up.

Băn khoăn giữa 2 và 3 sao. Mình thích tính cách của Lý Quang Diệu và thế giới quan của bác ấy, tuy nhiên khi đọc nhiều khi hơi khó chịu vì cách tường thuật và kể lể của bác tác giả, làm mờ đi & mang tính hơi dẫn giải. Mình thích đọc cách viết "show, not tell", nên Tom Plate không khiến mình hồ hởi đọc cho lắm.
Dù sao thì, những cuộc đối thoại của họ vẫn làm rõ triết lý xây dựng quản lý quốc gia của LQD, hiện lên khá rõ và vẫn để lại nhiều ấn tượng trong đầu, dù đọc hết đã lâu.

Qua cuộc đối thoại của nhà báo Tom Palte với Lý Quang Diệu, ấn tượng của mình về vị thủ tướng này chính là sự thông minh, thẳng thắn, nghiêm khắc, dữ dội, nóng nảy, liều linh và thậm chí là nguy hiểm. Lý Quang Diệu không gắn chặt với một tư tưởng hay triết lý ví đại nào, ông luôn đi với triết lý hành động và kết quả. Khi một chiến lược hay chính sách không hiệu quả, ông thay đổi nó. Đó chính là điều mà mình ngưỡng mộ ở Lý Quang Diệu.
Các nước phương Tây thường chỉ trích Lý Quang Diệu là nhà độc tài ôn hòa, là tiểu Hitller của châu Á, các tổ chức nhân quyền lên án về hình phạt roi và số lượng bản án tử hình ở Singapore, họ cho rằng như vậy là không dân chủ và quá hà khắc. Có lẽ sẽ còn phải đọc nhiều sách về Lý Quang Diệu thì mới hiểu hết được con người có tầm vóc vĩ đại này. Trong quyển sách này có đề cập về 2 tập tự truyện của Lý Quang Diệu, quyển sách bán chạy nhất Singapore hồi bấy giờ là Vị thầy tu bán xe Ferrari và cuốn Bí mật của những triệu phú tự thành đạt. Chắc sẽ dành thời gian để tìm đọc những quyển sách này mới được.

Depending on where you are and how much global politics you follow, you may or may not have heard of Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) considered the founding father of Singapore. Nonetheless, if you want to hear out the thoughts of a renowned albeit at times controversial leader, a man who was the driving force behind the emergence of such a small nation as Singapore as a first world economy, then Tom Plate's interview with him conducted over two days in 2009 are a good beginning. In this book, Tom Plate, who does not hide his awe for LKY, asks him a plethora of questions ranging from the ideas that led to Singapore's success story to the politics of the neighbouring countries, to LKY's views on the American leaders, past and present. LKY held the post of Prime Minister for 31 years in Singapore and so he does have a lot to tell which is worth hearing! Do not expect much of a controversial discussion, for this is no David Frost v/s Richard Nixon kind of conversation. But the book does carry gravitas and has aspects worth pondering over, for any leader, be it one of a nation or a corporation or a sports team.

This book did two things I think were important to build upon the body of literature representing LKY;

The interview was friendly and open, from a Western perspective. It focused on issues that are non-sensationalist (LKY and Singapore's place in Asia, their relation to growing giants in Asia - especially relating to their personal explosive growth relative to larger neighbours, and LKY's non-ideological rationalism which borders on an aversion to ideology as a whole) as opposed to the common "Haha, no chewing gum and lots of caning!"

It displayed human qualities in LKY, often thought of as a stone-faced authoritarian. This is represented through the authors narration of the interview and personal thoughts, which although a touch overplayed allowed the reader to experience something akin to true interaction with one of Asia's greats.

The first half of the book is good and inspiring: you job as A leader is to inspire and galvanize, Not to share Your Distraught thoughts. You make your people Dispirited.
For lee, Serious, competent governance requires making difficult policy choices and seeing them through to effect, even against strong opposition and the tide of public opinion.

There is a question throughout the book: L y k is a fox or hedgehog? The concept was taken from philosopher Isaiah Berlin. The author illustrates his own answer at the end of the book.

Also, In the book, he mentioned many times regarding plato and machiavelli and their thoughts .

It gives me a pretty good insights of how Mr Lee Kuan Yew had impacted not just Singapore, but the world including the giant countries like US and China, how one man's view can have a huge effect on how a leader would run their country and how a leader's vison of the country would bring them where they want to be and if they really are in the right direction. Either a short term pain for long term gain, or unknowingly a short term gain that resulted in the long term suffering of his people (e.g. Hong kong education system - their main language right from the start).

I read this during the early part of the pandemic, when I despaired of America's ability to govern itself. It was as inspiring as a book about an authoritarian semi-dictator can be. The book has some foresight of the basic geopolitical topics that occupy us today, and probably is as good a case as possible for a resolutely non-democratic, non-western philosophy of government. Those of us who strongly support individualistic liberal democracy shouldn't be totally ignorant of Lee's perspective.

Unfortunately, the negative views are correct. Although there are some interesting insights from Lee Kuan Yew in this, they make up less than a quarter of any chapter, and instead we get Tom Plate's totally banal (or entirely irrelevant) observations or anecdotes.

I don't like being negative but I think this is the worst interview I've read, there is a place for the interviewer to add context and insight but Tom Plate completely fails to add any of relevance.

Had high hopes for this book especially since the writer seemed to know and be on good terms with LKY. There’re gems and like one reviewer said — a pretty ok book if it’s the first you’ve read. But the voice of Tom Plate himself seem to dominate over LKY which is abit ironic. Too much repetition, too much unnecessary side observations, interpretations and fluff. Still, an interesting enough book.

Tom Plate is an exceptional story teller. Weaving his interview with LKY artfully like a story that is incredibly engaging. From the time I picked it up and started reading, I was not able to put it down. I had completed the book within a day.

LKY's views as always, are sharp and cuts straight to the point. His views are today, still extremely relevant in the long cycles of geopolitics and civilizations.

I really enjoyed this little book. It gives an excellent flavor of what the great man is like. It's obviously not anything in-depth and it is uncritical, but as a quick portrait of LKY in his own words it is illuminating and charming.
