"All beings trust their superiors. They can't survive if they don't follow blindly. And those who are trusted seek to pass their burden to those above them. Those above them pass it higher still. And that is how all kings are created. And how all gods are born." [Aizen]

Within the first chapters of Volume 44 we came back to the events happening in Hueco Mundo. Chad and Renji are down, and Rukia is stuck in Yammy's clutches. She can be very easily killed in less than a second. When Yammy throws her in the air, it seems like it's her end. But there comes Ichigo, as always right on time and in the coolest way possible :)

"You!!"
"Yo. You've grown real big since the last time I saw you. I almost didn't recognize you."

Yammy is raging badly, but Ichigo's not shaken. He's here to win. But something feels off about him - it's something Rukia realizes with just one look at his face.

What happened at the canopy? His eyes weren't the eyes of a victor. They weren't the eyes of a man about to slay an enemy either. What happened?

When Ichigo calls for his Hollow mask, there is another change that Rukia notices. The pattern on his mask seems to be different than the last time she saw it. And, despite acting confident and tough, Ichigo's having trouble against Yammy. Either his opponent is stronger than anyone else they had ever faced or Ichigo is not as strong as he usually is. The situation could've ended very badly if it wasn't for the appearance of unexpected help.

"What is your duty? Your duty is to defend that town. Go. You are the Substitute Soul Reaper of Karakura."

It seems like Ichigo is no longer needed in Hueco Mundo, which means that he should go back to the world of the living and help in the battle against Aizen.

"At this point, the only person from the world of the living, the Soul Society, Hueco Mundo or anywhere else who can confront Sôsuke Aizen is probably you." [Unohana]

Because of Mayuri's intelligence and skills, the passage to the world of the living is finally opened. With Ichigo on his way, we could go back to the events happening in the Karakura Town. Shinji stands up against Aizen, while Komamura and Hisagi are up against Tousen.

"Why did you throw everything for the sake of power?! What is that you fear now?!"
"I do fear something. I've had the same fear for a hundred years. The fear of assimilating and dying as a Soul Reaper."

The battle between Komamura, Hisagi and Tousen is a tough one, for one side at least. Tousen shocks both of his former friends by transforming into a Hollow and attacking them mercilessly. It's like their common history didn't matter anymore. Tousen didn't seem like the person Komamura and Hisagi used to know. It's like they encountered a stranger. An enemy, not a friend. To be quite honest, I always found Tousen's character confusing. It looked like he was mourning the loss of his friend that died by a Shinigami's hand, but still become a Shinigami, because he wanted to carry his friend's will. With him turning against the Soul Society, it looked like his goal is revenge. But because of his show of the Hollow power he got from Aizen, it looks like the revenge was never his primer goal. He was seeking power. He wanted to be stronger than a Shinigami, that's why he sided with Aizen and betrayed everyone he knew. What was up with his speeches about justice then? He doesn't look powerful or wise. He just looks like a hypocrite who doesn't deserve the devotion of his friends.

I am not sorry for Tousen. I will never be sorry for Tousen. But I am sorry for Hisagi and Komamura. I can't imagine how tough this battle had to be for them and how painful it had to be to see their beloved person transform into a being they couldn't recognize. Tousen had a big impact on both of their lives, so no wonder that their goal was to change his way and make him come back to the Soul Society's side. Through the fight it was obvious to them that it's not gonna happen. So there was only one thing to do then. Give their all to win and get rid of their beloved friend.

"REAP, KAZESHINI." :(

Volume 44 was a tough one to get through, mostly because of the bad situation everyone were in. But Ichigo's on his way to the world of the living now! The only hope is coming! All the Soul Reapers and the Vizards need to do now is to stay strong until he arrives. I cannot wait for it to happen!

Some of my thoughts while reading (beware of the spoilers)

~ I find interesting that the battle between Ichigo and Yammy basically ended the same way their first encounter ended.
~ Ichigo's not broken yet, but definitely shaken pretty badly after his battle against Ulquiorra. His gaze full of pain broke me. He always fights, because he has to. He always gives everything to win, because he has to. But a fight needs to be fair and the one against Ulquiorra didn't feel fair.
~ I felt the same amount of joy seeing Byakuya's and Kenpachi's intervention in Ichigo's fight against Yammy like I did when I saw it for the first time.
~ "Step back, Ichigo Kurosaki."
"Huh?"
"Pft! You heard me! You get pounded everywhere you go. I said step back because you're an embarrassment, you hack."
"Huh?!"
- the scenes between Zaraki and Ichigo are always hilarious lol 😂
~ I really liked to see Byakuya putting his hand in front of Ichigo, either to shield him or to stop him (the intention doesn't matter much).
~ Mayuri getting pissed off when Ichigo compared him to Urahara lmao. It's clearly his sore spot! 😂
~ Kenpachi in his fight against Yammy looked like a very deranged ant fighting an elephant 😂
~ I liked how Byakuya pointed out that it looked like Mayuri believed in Ichigo ending up as victorious against Aizen. I think everyone believes in Ichigo and his abilities, even if they not always show it.
~ Unohana being shocked when Ichigo explained that his spirit energy is not full yet. Girl, you have no idea how strong this boy is. And this said boy also doesn't have any idea!
~ Okay. Thanks, Unohana-san. I'm glad that you told me before I fought him. That's all I needed to hear. I'm your only hope, right? Then there is only one thing to do. I'll have to defeat Aizen." [Ichigo] TEARS TEARS TEARS 🥹
~ I always love to see Unohana intimidate everyone around her without even trying lol 😆
~ Byakuya and Kenpachi bickering never gets old 😆 Poor Yammy! He should've just run away! 😂
~ "Until Ichigo returns, eh? You must really trust that boy."
"That must be unfathomable for someone who doesn't even trust his own people."
- TEARS TEARS TEARS 🥹
~ Hisagi's emotional face expression in the flashback broke me 😭 I hate Tousen, but I'm grateful that he was there when Hisagi needed him.
~ "My heart has already forgiven you." - Tousen truly doesn't deserve a friend like Komamura
~ How wasn't Tousen ashamed to call Komamura ugly while being in his ghastly Resurrection form is beyond me. Yikes 😬

It's so good to get back into this series after not having read it for such a long time. I've missed these characters and the world.

One of my reading goals for this year was to finish some of the manga series that I've put on hold for the last few years and Bleach is one of them. It's always been one of my favourite manga series and I only stopped reading it because I started reading more fiction again. If every volume is as good as this one then I'm going to have no problem flying through it.

The battles continue as Tōsen reveals his motivations and his newly-acquired powers to a hurt Komamura. The confrontation with Aizen is also teased once again as each player mentions a secret weapon still unknown to the reader.

Everyone is also on standby as Ichigo Kurosaki returns to the living world while his arc reveals that he might be everyone's only hope in this giant game of chess.

I have to mention that this Aizen story arc, especially these battles, has covered quite a lot of volumes within this franchise. If there's anything to conclude about it all, it's that Bleach is establishing itself as a fantastic artistic manga where battle sequences are one of the most important ingredients to this franchise.

Wow. As a bleach fan I have heard of "vice it" for quite a while and am well aware of how much people love this volume. It truly does not disappoint. The earlier parts of this volume with Ichigo Byakuya and Kenny were good but the later 2 thirds were what made this a 5, make no mistake about it. Komamura is such a great character man and I genuinely LOVE him, he Is easily goated and his entire relationship/feud with Tosen truly comes to a head here as we see a brilliant discussion of morality shared between the two former friends. Wow. Amazing fight, tosens forms are incredible and Kubo has not held back in showing how far he has fallen and how vile he has become. KOMAMURA - PUT SOME RESPECT ON MY BOYS NAME WHEN YOU SAY IT!

Bleach, Vol. 44 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (378–386) of the on-going manga series.

Ichigo Kurosaki manages to reach where Rukia Kuchiki, Yasutora "Chad" Sado, and Renji Abarai were after Rukia was thrown by Yammy Riyalgo. Ichigo finds himself outmatched against Yammy as Byakuya Kuchiki and Kenpachi Zaraki arrive and hold off the Espada while Ichigo is instructed to return to the world of the living through alongside Retsu Unohana to face Sōsuke Aizen.

However, as Kenpachi and Byakuya argue over which of them is stronger, a furious Yammy reveals his ability to increase his power through his rage. While heading for the world of the living through the Garganta opened by Mayuri Kurotsuchi, Ichigo learns from Unohana that he is the Soul Society's trump against Aizen as he is the only combatant who is not under the effect of Aizen's zanpakutō.

In the meantime, after Gin Ichimaru had injured Hiyori Sarugaki, Shinji Hirako starts fighting Aizen in a battle of sensory manipulation. At the same time, Kaname Tōsen reveals he deliberately underwent Hollowfication with a disheartened Sajin Komamura using his Bankai which is revealed to be a weakness. Tōsen then explains his warped ideals for justice as he eventually uses a resurrección to assume an insect hollow form. Though he overpowers Komamura, Tōsen's excitement of seeing leaves him open to Shūhei Hisagi releases his zanpakutō and slices his former captain through the neck.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. The first part of the tankōbon switches back to Ichigo Kurosaki in Hueco Mundo. Byakuya Kuchiki and Kenpachi Zaraki arrives and tells him to return to Karakura Town, because he is their ace against Sōsuke Aizen, because they know absolutely that Ichigo Kurosaki is the only person not under Aizen's zanpakutō. The incursion into Karakura Town continues as it is revealed that Kaname Tōsen went through Hollowfication, but is killed by his former lieutenant Shūhei Hisagi, while he was distracted by Sajin Komamura.

All in all, Bleach, Vol. 44 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

Wow- so good!!!

Yammy takes on Byakuya and Kenpachi, who arrive at the perfect time in perfect Soul Reaper style. Seriously, my heart skipped a beat when they showed up! They distract Yammy so that Ichigo has the time to get back to Karakura Town. Our crazy Kurotsuchi sends them off in a funny contraption, and boy, does he have something nasty up his sleeve for Ichigo later. Ichigo actually travels back to Karakura Town with Captain Unohana, who begins to restore his spiritual power to its fullest on the way. She warns his about Aizen's attack and believes that he is the only one that can stop him.

Aizen and Shinji begin a dance of words and Aizen does finally draw his sword, but we are left with that.

Then we get to the battle that broke my heart- Tôsen takes on Hisagi and Komamura. During the battle, we find out why Tôsen even became a Soul Reaper and his burning hatred over all these years. Komamura really trusted Tôsen, Hisagi too, so his betrayal was the hardest for them. We end with Tôsen getting badly injured by Hisagi and it looks like he has been defeated, but you never can tell in this series.

The last 2 volumes have been very sad. The tone has changed from tense and dramatic to heartbreaking. Even Ichigo is going through changes that worry others. In fact, in this volume, he has struggles Hollowfying and we don't know the extent of his change. So much is happening, but I'm just glad that we are given time to absorb each battle and relish the last few volumes left in this arc.

Its a great volume, the stakes are getting higher and Aizen and all are in their final phase. This volume first focuses on the fight between Ichigo and Yammi and then Byakuya and Kenpachi come to his rescue and then we have him go from there, the second part focuses on Unohana realizing that Ichigo is stronger and the only one that can defeat Aizen. Meanwhile the big 3 have started making their moves against the Shinigami's. Tousen vs his close friend Komamura and his vice-captain Hisago, and their fight was filled with so many emotional moments. Him questioning what justice really is and whether Shinigami's actions can really be considered that and then he gets two amazing transformations - one as some knight and then insect form using hollowfication and his fight with Komamura is emotional. And then that ending..woah. The stakes are building towards a dramatic ending and it feels like a movie honestly.

This one definitely was a little more emotional. I was hoping there was a small chance of Tōsen realizing he was on the wrong side of this war, but his hatred for soul reapers was bigger than anything else. Kim Amira and Hisagi tried to help him, but it did not work. Once I seen that hollowfication they knew it was to late. Well he had already gone to far to come back so there was no saving him only stopping him. Can’t wait to see what happens next especially with Aizen and Gin.

A big setup for Ichigo to come in and kick butt, Byakuya and Kenpachi make an appearance, and emotions are running hot in the world of the living as the final showdown begins.

Overall a pretty good read, felt a little longer then the other ones and kinda felt like it was mostly filler.

Summary
Ichego fights Yammy, but something goes wrong with his hollowfication. He couldnt beat Yammy. Kenpachi and Byakuya come to the rescue. Ichego gets sent to the world of the living because hes the only one that could defeat Aizen (because he hasn't seen his sword). Tosen reveals he can hollowfy and he fights Hisagi. Shinji and Aizen fight. Komamura fights Tosen. Tosen preforms resureccion and turns into a moth creature and regains his sight. Hisagi then kills him

Given that Manga, and especially Shonen is split up into bigger arcs as composed to volumes I will be analyzing and reviewing this by Arc. I also reread this manga over the span of 2 months, some days reading as much as 100 chapters a day. It would be quite tedious for me to review each 7-8 chapter volume. So this will be copy and pasted throughout all of the 72 manga volumes. That being said, if you're looking at this without having viewed the series...spoiler warning. I don't recap anything, but I also mention things that happen. If you want me to answer the question "Should I pick this up?" Yes. Even if you stop at the end of the Soul Society Arc. It's worth it.

Karakura Town Arc - Chapters 1-56 - Rating: 7/10
(The official page lumps this in with the Soul Society Arc however I feel as if they are two very separate arcs with two very separate themes)
- A fun introduction.
-An interesting premise on the idea of ghosts and demons (Hollows)
-Does a good job of introducing the characters and I especially enjoyed the love for characters like Chad, Orihime and Uryu as these characters would later lose more and more spotlight as the series went on.
-It is a bit of a monster of the week. When it works, like with Chad's introduction story. It works. But Characters like Don Kanonji felt superficial and very gimmicky. Which, fair. I didn't enjoy them as much.

Soul Society Arc - Chapters 57-182 - Rating: 10/10
-The height of Bleach
-Establishes an afterlife seemingly perfectly. Later on revealed to be full of plot holes and never fleshed out but hey! That's not an issue in THIS arc. The fights are top tier, the themes of Ichigo owing a life debt to Rukia and his passion and determination to rise above literally God's army is inspiring and to this day is why I love Ichigo so much. He doesn't have some grandiose plan. He doesn't have a major goal to accomplish. He is a protector by heart, losing his mother has made him sour to failing to protect those he cares about and he'll do anything in his power never to feel that helpless again. Very powerful stuff.
-The twist near the end of this arc is revolutionary and would make waves for the next 200 chapters onward. A perfect ending and set up for the forthcoming arc.
-The only issues I have for this arc would be Ichigo's lightning speed progression. The guy goes from being able to barely defeat a third seat to besting multiple captains in roughly 100 or less chapters. I get that that is the point and him defeating captains was more of a struck of luck, but progression and pacing wise it feels very unearned and a factor of "for the plot he needed to be this strong" It only seems as fast as it is because Ichigo's progression slows drastically down for the rest of the story moving foreword so it's only now that I make that criticism.
-Also, and this will be an issue in most Shonen. There are 13 Captains with 13 Vice Captains and seats that branch all the way to 10 I believe? Regardless, there's a fudge ton of characters that are introduced here and it can get a little jarring at times. Luckily, Kubo does a great job at making their designs and characters unique despite such a large cast.

Hueco Mundo Arc - Chapters 183-423 - Rating 7/10
-This is another arc where personally I would split it up into two separate arcs. But for the sake of this review I will simply refer to the first half of the arc and the later half of the arc. First Half 9/10. Second Half. 5/10.
-The first half of this arc is a great continuation of the last. Ichigo now struggles with his inner demons and it affects his ability to protect the ones he loves. We are also introduced to a deadly unknown new villains. The Arrancars/Espada to this day remain one of my favorite villain factions in all of manga enemies.
-Just so you're aware I would say the first half of this arc ends right around the point of Ichigo vs Grimmjow. Grimmjow is one of the first Arrancar that Ichigo faces. And he's also one of two Espada that he faces three times. The conclusion of that fight shows Ichigo conquering his inner demons. Where Grimmjow is very much fighting to establish himself. Grimmjow has to fight Ichigo to prove to his fallen comrades that he is as good as he says he is. He doesn't care about Aizen, he doesn't care about the rest of the Espada. It is very personal for him. For Ichigo, Orohime is within his grasp of saving and he views this as his "final" battle. It's my favorite fight in all of Bleach.
-However, this is where things start to take a bit of dip in quality in my opinion. We had a goal and we were striving towards that goal. Each character of the original cast coming to repay the debt they made to their friend who had risked her life to save them in the Soul society arc. But somewhere along the way it seems we just had a fighter fest. Captains would face enemies with no themes or character revelations. The Espadas got a little light but nothing that made their fights compelling. You almost just feel bad for the Espada as they were monsters turned into a military force by an unstoppable tyrant. But even that wasn't enough to make half of the fights interesting. Now, that's with knowing the outcome. These fights played little importance in the larger scheme of things. Where at least in the Hueco Mundo fights each match up had the protagonists striving for a goal. Rukia to defeat Aaroneiro to free her former superiors soul. Byakuya to defend Rukia. Renji and Uryu teamwork. Nel to protect Ichigo and get revenge on Nnoitra. Whereas Stark fought Kyoraku.....cause.....and Hitsugaya fought Halibel because Water vs Ice would be cool.
-This leaves me to the end. I won't say it wasn't satisfying that Ichigo was able to defeat Aizen. And yes, I do feel like his new power was earned. 3 months of training. But this was clearly a last minute decision to save Aizen for a later date and the show must go on. I do feel like it wasn't as satisfying as 200+ chapter buildup needed to be.

The Fullbring Arc - Chapters 424-479 - Rating: 8/10
-A very underrated arc. And yes, I acknowledge that rating wise I think the Fullbring arc is superior to the Hueco Mundo arc. That is mostly true. Though I like the first half of the Hueco Mundo Arc more than the Fullbring arc. The end of the HM arc really brought it down for me. The Fullbring Arc is much more concise and is actually the shortest arc in the series and works as a glorified Ichigo getting his powers back arc. But that doesn't mean its bad.
-When I read it originally back when it was coming out in 2010. (Cause I'm Old) It wasn't phenomenal. In fact, I hated it. But wouldn't you? It took just short of a year to get to the point that we were at. But upon rereading it, it gave much deserved love to the characters who hadn't been shown love in quite some time. The original cast. It was a very character focused arc. Ichigo never seemed more human. And despite me hating it before for taking so long, reading weekly can sometimes hurt these mystery based arcs. The twist is heavily foreshadowed and I really appreciated it.
-That being said, the end was super rushed. This was a big bummer for me. The villains this time around were humans. And the ones who had the most exposure and relations with these characters were the original cast who again....were humans. So to have the soul reapers, who have no connection to the fullbringers show up and basically no diff most of the fullbringers felt very forced and fanservicey to me. This very well could have not been Kubo's call. As the community was very vocal about their dislike for this arc as it was going on. But I appreciate it now much more as I appreciate character and story over big sword fights. Lol.

The Thousand Year Blood War Arc - Chapters 424-689 - Rating: 5/10
-And we're finally here. The final and largest arc within the Bleach story. And man...does it not stick the landing.
-That being said, this arc has phenomenal moments. Kenpachi's Shikai and Bankai. Ichigo's double swords. Renji's true Bankai. Rukia's Bankai. And many more. However, they are put together against the most break neck speed arc that I have ever read. Kubo was very ambitious when he introduced 26 new villains. However, most of them got barely any screen time and a lot of them even got off screened by higher level captains. This was unlike the Espada who each got a full double page spread for their Resurrections.
-Yhwach himself was a phenomenal villain but was dealt with swiftly and imo dirty. They did him dirty.
-There was just something off. The mood changed and it was very apparent. The villains had random powers instead of the powers reflecting their personalities or needs. The finale felt so underwhelming.
-Ichigo gets to be the strongest he's ever been....but he doesn't defeat a single person besides the main villain despite being in several fights.
-It isn't a good arc. In fact, I would say it's the worst. Hopefully the anime does a better job with this already mammoth of a story. 260 chapters is no joke.

This gives the story of Bleach an Overall rating of 7.4/10. Which to me is above average. It has it's ups and downs. It's not perfect. But when it's high, it's peak shonen. But when it's low, it's very forgettable.

Yammy holds Rukia in his hammy grasp, and things aren’t looking good for the Soul Reaper when who should appear, like a glorious deus ex machina? Why, Ichigo Kurosaki, of course! His first comment to Yammy is, “Hey! You’re grown real big since the last time I saw you. I almost didn’t recognize you.” He is always laid back, even in the face of danger. Ichigo has left Orihime in the World of the Living so she can heal Uryu. He’s going to take care of this big guy and then he needs to get back to the big fight, over Karakura Town.

When Ichigo hollowfies, Rukia thinks she notices something different about his mask, and even Ichigo thinks something feels different to him. But things are starting to look bad for Ichigo when two saviors appear on the scene unexpectedly—Byakuya and Kenpachi! And they are arguing over who arrived first! They tell Ichigo to step back so they can fight as he is a major embarrassment. Byakuya tells Ichigo he is needed at home because he is the Deputy Soul Reaper. But Ichigo says he has no way to go…

And then here comes Kurotsuchi, and he sends Ichigo off with Unohana. Kurotsuchi settles down to watch the fight, and wait for the corpses he wishes to dissect afterward. Growing impatient, though, he tells the two Soul Reapers, “Will you please hurry up and kill each other? If you allow him to get any bigger, it will make the dissection harder.”

Now Aizen is facing Shinji, while Komamura and Hisagi are still squaring off against Tosen. But Tosen has another trick up his sleeve! There seems to be no going back for him, much to Hisagi’s regret.

Getting closer and closer all the time. Ichigo is finally on his way. As he and Unohana travel together, she explains to him why no one else can defeat Aizen, and her explanation really makes sense. She also comes to realize that Ichigo is a lot stronger than she imagined, and perhaps he is the savior they are looking for. The appearance of Byakuya and Kenpachi was unexpected and great! Also Kurotsuchi. He’s odd but you just gotta love him (just don’t let him experiment on you!).

I think we’re reaching the climax of this arc now. Does Aizen have some master plan, or is he winging this? How will he react when Ichigo enters the scene? Looking forward to finding out!

The long-awaited fight with Rukia/Renji/Chad against Yammy has reached it's conclusion... off-page! Yeah we just missed it entirely, and then Ichigo and some others show up and finish it anyways. Yammy is strong! Yammy has an interesting power! Do we get to see it? Ehhhhh

This volume provides a little actual plot progression with Ichigo leaving to go join the battle in the fake Karakura Town. But the core of it is Tosen versus Komamura and Hisagi. We learn more about who Tosen is, what motivates him, and how his betrayal has affected his closest 'friends'. Even that fight isn't particularly interesting but there's some good emotional pay-off that's been building for a while.

As characters start dropping it looks like the final confrontation against Aizen is actually going to happen. I don't know if this is a good volume overall but there's finally a sense of progression and urgency to the story other than random battles. Character arcs are coming to a close, plot threads are being tied up, and it's feeling more organize. But that's not really a plus for how this volume executes it- more a hope for future volumes to improve.

VOLUME 44: CHAPTER 378-386
Arc 9: Arrancar: Downfall

Renji, Chad and Rukia being beaten by Yammy. Ichigo appears to save them and fight Yammy but he is too powerful. Suddenly, Byakuya and Kenpachi arrived and take over the battle. Mayuri opened up a Garganta and send Ichigo and Unohana to Karakura Town. In the way, Unohana tells Ichigo that he is the only one who can defeat Aizen as he is the only who didn't see Aizen's Shikai. At the same time, Unohana restored Ichigo's reiatsu.

In Karakura Town, the battle between Shinji and Aizen is going to start. Aizen draws his sword and Shinji released his Shikai: Sakanade. Komamura and Shūhei fight Tousen. Tousen used his new power, a Hollowification. Shūhei was defeated and Komamura used his Bankai: Kokujou Tengen Myouou. Tousen released his Resurrecion: Grillar Grillo. Tousen turned into big insect and now he can see. He beat Komamura off but suddenly his head was stabbed by Shūhei.

I loved how this volume highlighted the storyline between Tōsen and the betrayal of his friends and comrades. Tōsen’s Hollowification and the flashback where he monologues about fear were some of the best moments of this arc. “Those who don’t fear the very sword they hold are not worthy of holding one.” I loved seeing the Tōsen’s Resurreccíon and how it compared to his Bankai. This volume made me appreciate Tōsen’s betrayal as a storyline because it fully fleshed out his motivations and his character while reaching the climax of the storyline. I loved how the fight wrapped up this volume and how it concluded and ends on a cliffhanger.
