The Dark Eye is based on the brand-new fourth edition of Das Schwarze Auge, Germany's premier fantasy role-playing game since 1983. The world of Aventuria awaits you! This core rulebook allows you to play a character chosen from a background of 8 cultures and 12 professions. It includes a detailed yet easy attribute and skill system, a quick combat system and the basic rules for sorcery. It also features a short primer on Aventurian geography, politics, history and religion, as well as 8 archetypal characters for easy access to an endless world where fantasy and reality meet.
An excellent book for a new tabletop fantasy RPG in the English speaking world. It has richly detailed cultures. The system is different from d20 versions of D&D and has an interesting character generation method that uses accounting of points based on player choices rather than random die rolls. I only wish they had gone through with the expansion and accessories in English. It's still more popular than D&D in the German speaking world.
I remember reading this in german. They are not the same as the later rules which is....weird. All in all, The Dark Eye is...a german fantasy game that both outgrew its roots and at the same time imprisoned itself in those very same roots.
