They're big. They're bright. They're powerful. Big wheels get the tough jobs done. Lifting, pushing, digging, dumping-they build the real world children live in and the imaginary worlds they create for themselves. Preschoolers will revel in the power that comes from knowing the name and function of each of these huge machines, and they will have fun picturing themselves riding atop each behemoth as they read about their favorite trucks again and again. With Anne Rockwell's colorful illustrations and simple text, this exciting book is sure to become a classic with another generation of young readers.
This picture book, Big Wheels, is about the different types of big-wheeled vehicles that are used to get jobs done around the world. Like tractors and whatnot. The images are depictions of piggies using these “big wheels”. This book has no purpose other than to teach about these different vehicles. There is no lesson gained from this story.
I do not believe this book is necessary to have in a classroom. It would be a hit with boys and tomboys, but not the whole class. It could be a useful tool to engage children in therapy. Especially when trying to elicit sounds that these “big wheels” might produce.
In this book, pigs drive different machines that have big wheels. The machines are introduced and described as helpful to our lives. It teaches young children about the many different uses of big wheels.
I thought the illustrator put a fun twist on this book by giving pigs the roles of humans. The book is fairly straightforward so it added excitement to each page. I enjoyed looking through the pictures while I learned about what different machines are used for.
This book would be great for young children to read. To some kids, machines and big wheels are very interesting, and with this book, they will learn a lot about them. It's very informational while still being a very easy read.
My allmost 2 year old boy really likes this one. Which is suprising to me because we never talk to him about tractors or trucks. So it just must be in the innate boy in him toward why he likes this one. I like the picutres and illustrations... they helped me learn the different names... heck mommies can learn something too.
This book is about the different jobs that each big wheeled vehicle does. I enjoyed this book because of the simplicity of the explanations and the pictures that, for the most part, captured what those vehicles looked like. I would use this book to expose children to what goes on in the outside world.
All of Anne Rockwell's books are great for kids -- well illustrated and not *too* unbearable for the adults (or big sisters) who have to read them a thousand times. "Big Wheels" was a particular favorite of my first brother.
I really like this one; it's got the variety of trucks of course, which my toddler is really into, but it's also got a variety of colors, and other fun things in the pictures to practice vocabulary (hat, book, circle, etc). There is a lot of opportunity for interactive reading.
this is great book that would fascinate younger boys who love trucks and tractors. this book shows many different forms of tractors that have big wheels and it shows the way the equipment is used. the best part to me is that the operators are little pigs!
I really like this book, I feel like it would draw little readers in. the illustrations are also very good. I'm almost certain I read this book as a child.
I could use this book in my class to excite young boys about reading. you know they would love to read a book about big wheels and pigs. I could also use this to spark a discussion on our roads or agriculture.
I'm going to buy this for my son for christmas b/c he loves it so much. He asks for the big truck book with pigs every night. I am contemplating keeping the library's copy until he gets his own to avoid a meltdown. Large colorful illustrations accompanied by text in the white space at the bottom of each page are sure to delight your little construction workers to be.
Colorful chubby trucks with pig drivers and a well-cadenced text... definitely a hit with my truck-crazy preschoolers. A wider variety of vehicles than the standard. Good for the two-to-four year old truckers, and quite bearable for those who have to read to them. Pair with I Love Trucks, Truck Stuck, Honk Honk Beep Beep,My Truck is Stuck, or the Byron Barton truck board books.
Introduces a variety of working vehicles and their purpose. Includes bulldozers, cement mixers, snow plows, tractor scrapers, and other large-wheeled vehicles.
The illustrations make this book unique - there are pigs driving these machines! It's a world of pigs! Somehow it adds another level of fun to an otherwise common theme.
