This book is a gem. I encountered it on a music stand on my parents' front porch, where my brother and dad had been companionably strumming throughout the vacation. I'd been told to bring my uke, but forgot. Fortunately, they set theirs down from time to time, so I could meet this lovely book...and then immediately order it online and have it waiting upon my return.
The book is a combination of early 20th century Americana,1960s folk, some classic ballads and The Beatles...lots and lots of Beatles. I was surprised at the high percentage I knew. Helpful chord charts at the top of each song are ideal for rookies like me. All songs are very sing-able and attainable (chord-wise) with a play through or two. The holiday and songs for children sections are a nice touch.
This book has dramatically increased my ukulele repertoire. I don't know if this is damning, but I will be bringing it and my uke to the nursing home the next time I am up North to play through it for my grandfather.
As fake books go this is one of the better ones I have seen. 365 familiar songs is a lot. I read through them all and found only a handful that I didn't recognize. Those were the ones with lyrics in Hawaiian. Covers everything from George M. Cohan to Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and John Lennon. Lyrics and printed music with chords. It could use better indexing, but at least the print is legible, unlike some I have seen. Weighs a couple of pounds, 336 pages, spiral bound. Will not fit in your ukulele gig bag, alas.
I get a lot of mileage out of this book, though the vocal range isn’t always comfortable for me. It has Bad, Bad Leroy Brown which is 4-star worthy in its own right.
I will be enjoying this book for years to come. A song to learn for every day of the year. I really like how the music is written out with chord charts underneath each song title so you know what chords are in the song and can practice them before playing through. There are some easy as well as challenging pieces, old and new songs from all different genres. The book also has a spiral binding to lay completely flat.
Fun! Will take it out of the library again. Seeing the book lying about, I was more likely to pick up my ukulele. Trying to practice a short bit daily vs a couple hours once every two weeks.
This collection has sheet music for 365 songs, alphabetical by song title until the last section, which is done by holiday. While the chords were on the whole a little difficult and could probably be simplified, I did like attempting to play the notes and having the full lyrics and bars to get a full sense of how the song should be played. There's a fairly wide range of songs, from classic folk songs to more modern songs, but nothing really more modern than, say, the Beatles, Elvis, or the Beach Boys.
Buy yourself a Ukulele which is one of the easiest instruments to learn and this book - and bliss out happily singing and strumming - family and friends will join in and everyone looks so happy.
