If you have ever thought about keeping bees, or simply want to know more about them and how you can help these industrious and charming creatures, then this book is a must! Designed to be a first step, it explains the life of the honeybee and the work of the beekeeper, both in a rural and an urban situation. Anyone with time and enthusiasm can become a beekeeper. The rest of us can help by planting bee-friendly plants in our gardens, allotments and window boxes. Author Gerard Baker is a highly experienced beekeeper. In his role as Food Historian, Gerard has also become a familiar figure on the popular BBC TV series 'Mums know Best' with the Hairy Bikers.
As a novice when it comes to beekeeping, I found the simple style of the book very helpful. It provides enough information to understand the role of a beekeeper and the life cycle of bees etc, without becoming confiding for a beginner. Other reviews have pointed out that this book is not particularly helpful for those who already know the basics. That might be true, but I found it very helpful, and look forward to continuing my beekeeping learning, with a more in depth book. I recommend it to those who know very little about bees and beekeeping.
This book was not exactly what I was hoping for. I wanted somthing that would be a good guide to beekeeping, but this was more on the informational side about bees. I learned some interesting things, but now I need to go read something more along the lines of a "how to" about keeping bees.
A great introduction to bees & some elements of beekeeping, but a lot more needed before it would be possible to keep bees. Great info, but not a how-to.
