Henry LeClair, Harvard professor and Boston PD consultant, has the perfect life—a wife he adores, a baby on the way, and a reputation for excellence. But when Henry’s life takes a brutally tragic turn, he can’t cope and turns his back on everything and everyone he’s ever known to become someone else entirely.
Now known as Squint, he travels the country and finds work where he can. But when he lands in the small town of Heather, Kansas, his old life creeps back in and he finds himself inadvertently investigating a tragic cold case involving his boss’ missing child.
With no shortage of suspects, he must quietly dig through the secrets of the townspeople and the lost girl’s family to nail a kidnapper, and maybe a killer. The investigation twists and turns leaving destruction in its wake—and Squint with a terrible choice—but he perseveres in the name of justice…and for his own salvation.
Follow Squint’s journey in this magnificent and poignant fan favorite prequel.
CB Laurence started writing the Express Investigations series during the COVID shutdown in 2020 after thirteen years of writer’s block. (Ugh.) The Mansfield stories were inspired by a music video (can you guess which one?) and once the cork popped, the books didn't stop.
She has a love for all things sugar and sandwich, and would crawl through broken glass for a Diet Coke.
After twenty years in Phoenix, she now connects to wi-fi in Texas, and lives with her 7-pound guard dog, Benji the Yorkie.
I needed a few tissues for the start of this story, yet I could not put it down. A really well written story that kept me turning pages and wondering who the killer was right up until the end. I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Have you ever started reading a book, knowing full well that you are going to be crying through some of it but you are determined to read it anyway? This is certainly one, as I read the previous book in the series and knew that it was all about Squint, after his demise.
Poignant, heartbreaking and amazing - what else can I say? I am glad to have read it, sad at his story but loved it all the same. A good mystery as well. Totally recommend! (sobbing most of the way through! ;)
