A new adventure begins! In order to assist Professor Oak's research, a young Trainer, Crystal, hits the streets of Cherrygrove City with a new Pokédex in hand! Her goal is to catch all kinds of Pokémon! And what will happen when the Legendary Pokémon Suicune has awakened?!
Ok. So these aren't bad...they're just quick. And honestly there's not much of any sort of plot in these Johto ones. Volume 10 gives us Crystal who gets the other Pokedex in order to collect Pokemon for Oak. And she's just brilliant at capturing Pokemon, it's what she's known for. And there's a wild Suicune running around. That's about it for this volume. Just fluff. I mean, they're fun but just fluff.
Another story arc starts, this time focusing (sort of) on Crystal, AKA "Crys," and expert Pokemon catcher.
I say "sort of" because a large chunk of this manga doesn't include Crys. She's there at the start, but once the legendary Suicune appears, the focus changes to Suicune battling various gym leaders for three chapters, seemingly for cameos. Crys eventually returns, also going after Suicune, but then she's sharing the spotlight with Eusine and is left out again for about a chapter.
The story this time around is weaker compared to past arcs, mostly because of Crys disappearing for chapters at a time. Catching all the Pokemon for Prof. Oak and trying to get Suicune is a really cool quest for Crys, but when they ignore her quest, the story loses focus. Imagine if when Yellow was looking for Red, they cut to three chapters of Youngster trying to catch a Godzilla-sized Raticate. No matter how epic that battle is, it still doesn't have much to do with the plot, right? That's kind of what happened with those three Gym Leaders vs Suicune chapters. No bearing on the story, and no characters we've even met before, and so far, no characters we've seen since.
If they'd just stuck with Crys chasing Suicune and getting into trouble, perhaps with the other gym leaders, this could have gone a lot better.
Next volume continues the adventures of Crys, so hopefully it improves.
The introduction of Crystal...the weirdness (yet gentlemanly attitude) of Eucine... and why is Team Rocket back together? Just a few of the new additions to the ongoing storyline in this series. Ah...can't wait to sit and read the next volume, the return of the manga's psychotic version of Lance! *lol*
I love Kris, but man, this arc just feels so much more disjointed than Red and Yellow's did. Red's arc had a definite end before Yellow's started; Gold's ended in an extremely abrupt way before suddenly following Kris, with no answer as to what in the world happened to Gold and Silver.
This was my least favorite volume so far. It was very repetitive. Crystal stumbles upon a group of pokemon, captures them all. After Suicune came it got better, but not enough to carry the whole volume.
We meet Crystal "The Capturer" in this volume. I feel a real affinity to her because that's actually how I play the Pokemon games. I like to create a living pokedex. Yes, it's grueling sometimes, but I think it's fun. We actually meet a whole slew of interesting characters, and I'm sure their story lines will intersect at some point in the future which will be very exciting.
So the three legendaries are released after the fire at Ecruteak Tower, but
Also, we have a new artist going forward. I couldn't tell a whole lot of difference actually. Everyone is still incredibly cute. I think the main difference I can see is that we can see a lot more of the girl characters' lumps and bumps (so to speak).
Why kicking? I thought Gold’s billiards-esque approach to pokeball handling was the dumbest thing, but, no, there’s also kicking. And, before I get any responses, yes, I am well aware of the story explanation in the next volume, but it is still bad, dumb, and just unnecessary.
Other than that, Crystal is a cool protagonist (I’m liking her personality more than Gold’s, for sure), but the entirely abrupt shift away from Gold & Silver (I still can’t believe how badly the transition there was handled, even for this series, it was utterly devoid of tension and drama, for what they were going for) to Crystal and Suicune seems utterly random. Why is this happening? Why now? I’m afraid there won’t be any satisfying answers to my questions from the consistently mixed bag of Pokemon Adventures.
3/5 - She *kicks* the pokeballs.
P.S. I was not expecting to like Eusine by the end of this volume, but here we are.
Nice introduction to Crystal and unlike Gold she is actually experienced and also unlike Gold she has a goal which is to catch as many pokemon as she can. In fact Gold seems to be the only protagonist in this arc that really has no goal besides just get stronger. Also love the introduction to Suicune as we get to see others like Claire and Eusine who try to catch Suicune. Also Eusine has alot of personality as we see he is not only full of himself as he loves to make poses but he is also a con artist and he also has a goal that we get to see.
I think, from a metatextual perspective, it made a lot of sense to have the new artist start with a completely unrelated and fresh storyline with a new main character. From a storytelling perspective, though, it’s rather frustrating to do a complete pivot away from any of the plot threads from the last volume.
For what it is, though, it’s interesting to see a character focused on captures and this one’s shorter so it feels a bit snappier. It’s not bad, but I think it should have integrated the prior storylines a bit more. Hopefully the next volume will do so and be stronger for it.
I really enjoyed the addition of Crystal, she reminds me of Goh.. if Goh planned out things better, haha (Don't get me wrong I love him) The art is really fun, also! But... I do have a few complaints about this book. 1- Why do we so suddenly leave Gold and Silver?? It was kind of random how it switches, and 2- during the chase for a certain Pokemon, the chapters have no Crystal for a little while. I didn't enjoy that... but overall a good beginning to her story!
(This book contains mild fantasy violence, but nothing upsetting. I would give it a rating of all-ages.)
Volume nine leaves the reader with a mystery and a lot of unanswered questions, volume ten presents the reader with a new character, Crystal, and legendary Pokemon Suicune. Roughly, volume ten coincides with the game Pokemon Crystal and adds a lot to the plot. This is a similar model as what happened in the first sequence with Yellow, yet the story feels fresh. I think the artwork has vastly improved with the new illustrator and I enjoyed this overall, yet I still feel like this series will never recapture the initial magic in volumes one through three.
I thought I'm gonna miss Gold and Silver when I realized that there's a new main character in volume 10. I was so wrong! Crystal is the type of character that I was missing in the entire manga series. All other characters were focused on battles - how to train, how to get stronger, how to win a badge. Now we start to learn the other type of trainers - capturing them all! I'm so curious whose story will be continued in volume 11. Starting it right away. :)
A good introduction to Chris. Having a trainer with an already established team was interesting, and having that dynamic already solves some of the issues around certain Pokémon getting left on the wayside whilst other connections were established. Using Suicune to establish the gym leaders was a good narrative thread.
Johto is by far my favorite region, not because of the Pokemon necessarily, but because of the gym leaders and the connection between the two. This didn't disappoint.Johto is by far my favorite region, not because of the Pokemon necessarily, but because of the gym leaders and the connection between the two. This didn't disappoint.
It's taken a grand total of one volume for Crys to become my favorite Johto protag. The introduction of the legendaries and Johto Gym Leaders also does a lot for the plot. I had been worried I would care less after the plot moved away from Kanto, but the story is just as engaging and the characters just as unique!
This chapter takes a sharp pivot away from the characters of Gold & Silver to introduce Crystal. I don't quite like her character as someone who is suddenly a capture expert. It reminds me of Goh a bit, though perhaps the inspiration is inversed, who has a lot of Pokemon at her disposal but uses just the six main ones and are largely not even Johto Pokemon,
Another volume, and new character introduced here with Crystal, who I found more enjoyable to read about and follow than Gold. The tension and mystery increases in this one, and it is hard to determine overall what is going to occur. Good read though, and I look forward to the next volume :)
