A decaying ruin, the Hotel Philip is nearly empty, stripped of its luxurious furnishings and plush decor long ago. Its downfall: the notorious Room 33, the scene of mysterious deaths...and suicide...and an unsolved murder. The old hotel is still worth millions, and Joy Cole's stepfather left the place to her--cutting her glamorous, calculating mother out of his will. Joy plans to restore the building to its lost grandeur, if Wade Emerson, the handsome grandson of the hotel's builder, will help. But Wade keeps his distance--until a hot afternoon melts his reserve, and one by one, the secrets of the old hotel are revealed. Except where the bodies are buried. As the few remaining tenants in the hotel mysteriously start to disappear, Wade fears for Joy's life--and his own. Someone is watching and someone is waiting--for revenge. And revenge is a dish best served cold.
I live on Vancouver Island in the moody, green, and rain-washed Pacific Northwest. So when I'm seriously story challenged (too often!) I often walk the beach and commune with the stunning and multi-talented Mother Nature. (Make that beg for inspiration!) If that doesn’t work, a few minutes thinking about the quirks and foibles of human nature usually does the trick.
I dislike cooking. I dislike nosy people. I dislike too many rainy days in a row. I dislike snakes.
And the only word I hate is hate.
I love reading, writing, my sons, my sister, my twin granddaughters, my Rhodesian Ridgeback, Boon--and most of all my first and last husband, Tim.
You can follow me on Twitter, if that's something you tend to do. @EC_Sheedy I also mess around on Tumblr. That's here: http://ecsheedy.tumblr.com/
Jess always picks winners! This was an excellent book. It took me along time to get back into reading with all the crap that's been going on in my life but this was a page turner. I hate books that are too simple and I hate ones that are too confusing to follow. This was the PERFECT balance. 5 star!
A quick read as it's difficult to stop reading once you open the front cover and read the newspaper article, "Does the Hotel Philip Have a 'Room of Doom'?" My first discovery of a novel by E.C. Sheedy and I wouldn't hesitate to read another title by this author. The novel brought to mind the novels by Mary Stewart that I read so many years ago in high school. [Mary Stewart, a British novelist (1916-2014) credited with development of the romantic mystery genre.] Romance and suspense fill the pages and absorb the reader's attention. The author cites influences of sunshine and rain. Whether you have a few hours on a sunny afternoon or a rainy afternoon, this mystery exceeded expectations!
Honestly a great read! Before I read this book, it had been years since I've read. Sat down one day and just couldn't stop reading. Wound up having to limit myself to only reading a few chapters at a time so I wouldn't read all day. Definitely a page turner, a book for those who like that sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat anticipation of what's to come. Kept my mind racing trying to piece everything together. Quite the ride, with twists and turns along the way, most of them unseen. Highly recommended!
This is a guilty pleasure book. It would be a perfect TV mini series or movie on the lifetime or hallmark channel. It moves quickly and the author actually knows how to weave some drama so that you want to know how it all turns out. Good dime store paperback for a quick read to get you out of a book hangover.
I seriously forgot to review this one? Ooops. Fantastic, top notch, 5 star writing as always. I recommend this author to everyone. I forget how I stumbled upon her but I am glad I did. If you like this one you will also like A Perfect Evil.
Excellent book by an excellent writer! Jesse found this author. I don't how, but I'm glad she did! This one is definitely worth a read. I recommend it!
This author is brilliant. Jessica turned me on to her. This was even better than A Perfect Evil. Hmmm....well...maybe they were tied. It's hard to pick. LOL. Solid 5 star!
At the heart of this story is a creepy old 30's hotel which has been turned into apartments. I love creepy old 30's hotels that have been turned into apartments, and lived happily in two of them when I lived in Chicago.
This particular creepy old hotel, along with a hundred grand, was just inherited by Joy, the stepdaughter of the last owner, who completely disinherited his wife, instead leaving a letter for Joy to take care of her mother in the style to which she'd become accustommed. That style involved going through forty million dollars in just over ten years, so Joy has a bit of a quandry as to how to manage following her stepfather's last request.
Rather than sell the place, she decides to investigate what it would take to renovate it and turn it into a luxury hotel once more, and in her tour of the building meets Wade, her stepfather's son, who has been caretaking the place. As the two investigate the hotel's history together, they learn the disturbing history of Room 33 - the room of doom, as it was once referred to in the media before it was closed in the seventies - and of the withered old man who inhabits (and never leaves) the penthouse apartment.
It's a fun mystery, in a fun setting, with likable characters, but nothing super unexpected happens for those who read lots of mysteries. But I liked it anyway :)
Another very good story by this author, I'd say. She does write the sort of books I enjoy. In this one Joy, a free spirit, is willed an old Seattle hotel which has certainly seen better days and also has a room which has seen some tragedy over the years. She isn't sure whether she really wants this place but at least goes along to take a look and evaluate it. I did like the author's dedication at the beginning. There were some niggles, however. In one place Lana morphed into Joy which was wrong and Melly the dog kept having his sex reassigned depending on where you were in the story !! There were a couple of passages I didn't understand at all. The line "for the first time this season, he relaxed" totally perplexed me, the tide to his hotel I imagine was meant to be title. Again, the passage "she and Wade held to silence" confuses as does "her win steeling". To me they meant nothing !! All in all, I enjoyed this one, though.
So i found this book at a discount store for $1.00 and decided to give it a try. I am so glad i did! I absolutely loved this book. EC Sheedy did an amazing job of a writing a wonderful thriller that pulls the reader in until the end. The character development was great, especially when it came to the relationship between Joy and Wade , as well as with Joy's mother Lana. It was a great combination of past background of the hotel and the tenants within it. The plot was was very well written. It included the twist and turns that make up a wonderful thriller that keeps the reader from putting the book down until they finished it. I recommended this book to anyone that wants a nice escape into a fun, semi-romantic, and dark world. However make sure you have time to read because once you start this book you wont be able to put it down.
THIS IS THE SECOND BOOK BY THIS AUTHOR I'VE READ. I MUST SAY I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK TOTALLY, THE OTHER ONE I DIDN'T LIKE ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS. THIS WAS WELL WRITTEN, GREAT MYSTERY/LOVE STORY, I LIKE HOW 60YRS OF STRANGE GOINGS ON IN THE HOTEL WERE ALL CONNECTED (I FIGURED IT OUT EARLY ON). EVEN KNOWING I LOVED HOW THE BOOK JUST SORT OF CARRIED YOU ALONG EACH PAGE, WAITING TO SEE IF I WAS RIGHT. THIS FOR ME WAS A REAL PAGE TURNER ALL THE CHARACTERS WERE SO INTERESTING EVEN THE ONES I HATED. LOVE COMES IN MANY FORMS FOR DIFFERENT REASONS, EACH FORM OF IT IS EUNIQUE. DIFFERENT FORMS IN THIS BOOK LETS YOU KNOW JUST HOW COMPLEX LOVE CAN BE. IT TRULY MAKE EVRYONES INDIVIDUAL WORLD GO ROUND AND ROUND.
The back of the book and the cover made it seem like there was something supernatural going on in Room 33. I waited and waited and waited...
It's not that the story wasn't somewhat compelling, but I'd really wanted to read a certain kind of book and was disappointed that I'd been mislead by the summary.
This book was quite an enjoyable read. There was a very raunchy part in this book which took me by surprise, but overall, I enjoyed it. It's definitely not so amazing that I couldn't put it down... but it was a book that I could easily come back to.
This book just didn't do it for me. I was intrigued by the premise but I thought it would have been better as a horror TV series or something rather than a book.
