another tournament? but the change in scenary is interesting. and the separation of the four as well. But I was bummed that Kawa was missing from the action in the demon world.

The backstory of Hiei and Kurama was good, makes me love them even more....but what is going on...Urameshi part was really disappointing. They could've explored the father son dynamics a bit more, give more backstory on how powerful Raizen was but well...

One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!

Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.

Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.

The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.

---

Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.

Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.

While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.

Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.

Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.

The first half with Kurama and Hiei was pretty good. Hiei's past in particular was very well done and makes me look at his entire character in a very different light. I like him much more now. If not for this stuff, I'd have given the volume a 2/5.

The Yusuke stuff was pretty disappointing. He's so single-mindedly focused on battling. At times it just doesn't feel like Yusuke. And that could work if they were really playing up the angle of Yusuke losing his humanity and getting caught up in fighting for its own sake, but plot is not critical of him and doesn't give any sort of hint to the audience that they should be. Instead we go headlong into, what, the third tournament since volume 4? Even if a war might not have made the most sense for the Yusuke, it at least would have been more plausible for the rest of the cast and it would be something new.

The underlying problem here is that Togashi is focusing more on plot than character writing. We don't get to spend time with the characters or have those quiet moments because the plot is too busy trying to move into another excuse for characters to fight. Like our protagonist, the narrative has dropped the emotional and interpersonal made it so likeable in favor of trying to get straight to the action. And it's disappointing, especially knowing that there's only one volume left. Which means that the narrative has kneecapped itself for the sake of rushing into action that won't even be delivered on.

Ah, that's right! The reason I was disappointed in how the new tournament is quickly resolved was because we didn't get to see enough of Kokou and her big-ass tits...! I also like the tournament announcer girl with the fluffy twintails. And Mukuro is pretty cute too; I like her one boob.

I think, if I were to rank the stories of the demons' training in this volume, I might say "Hiei > Yusuke > Kurama." I found Hiei's a little too "wordy" at times, with the backstory of his and Yukina's birth, as well as Mukuro's (or a non-entity narrator?) assessment about his youth, but otherwise he had the "purest" training arc. Yusuke's was more interesting because of Raizen than Yusuke himself, and I appreciated the brief backstory on the human Urameshi ancestor whom Raizen fucked. Kurama's introduced a more "political" side to the conflict than the raw "battle" focus of the other lads', but also introduced numeric "power levels," which is weird to me, like pretty much any case of numeric power levels, as it feels like it's borrowed from Dragon Ball, which notably subverted power levels at the same time as introducing them, what with the Earthlings' ability to alter their power at will. Which, you know, is what Yusuke has been doing this entire manga. So this whole element of JRPG stats is kind of just... Togashi wanking over Dragon Quest, I guess?

I've already forgotten, but I think I choked up a bit at Raizen's funeral.

Hiei vs Shigure might be one of my favourite fights in the series, honestly. Hiei has spent the entirety of YYH one-shotting enemies with big powerful attacks that leave him wounded and spent afterwards. Many of them are over in seconds, after the first blast is fired. Though this battle lasts a chapter every page of it is so well choreographed! How many swordfights in manga come down to speed and power and explosive energy and 'wow he is just so strong' but no, this fight is evenly matched and requires actual swordplay and sacrifice for them to battle each other. It's fantastic. And that's... Hiei versus some random character in the penultimate volume of the series in a flashback sequence? It's like Togashi knew he had to give Hiei SOMETHING to end off on.

Same with Kurama, we get Kurama doing his big schemes. He's so smart, his fights are him outsmarting opponents or having them get cocky and slip up. So his chapters are the closest to political intrigue we get with the power struggle going on in the demon realm.

As much as I enjoy learning more about Hiei and Kurama, so many questions come to mind regarding them that it makes my head spin. The worldbuilding in this series has been average at best, and while I enjoyed learning more about the ice maidens and their floating castle, I wish I could learn more about the demon plane. Instead, I'm limited to maybe two or three locations despite the demon plane being described as "vast". Also, I know next to nothing about demons. What gave rise to them? What's their history? Why do they prefer to be lawless and not contained to law or territory? What led to this? I'm asking this because I'm genuinely curious and have received ZERO INFORMATION. More importantly, why am I learning any of this NOW? Demons were introduced in volume three, why am I only getting rushed history lessons a few volumes before the end? It's insanely frustrating and I wish more thought had been put in the worldbuilding.

Time for the last volume...*deep breath* here we go.

Getting to the end of the series now.

This is another tournament start. First we deal with the 3 demon kings and only one will rule everything. Yusuke decides to settle this matter after his pops passes away to begin a tournament. So we rush right into it and by the end we already witnessed a few matches. This is obviously Togashi ready to leave this title. Some panels are half drawn characters, really sketchy, and you can tell he was burnt out. I still enjoy it but it feels very rushed.

A 3 out of 5.

This is the part of the manga where it becomes clear Togashi doesn't want to write it anymore. We get the setup for another tournament arc, but his heart's not in it. The new characters all feel flat, like the author isn't excited by them or even that interested in them.

I read that Togashi intentionally wrote the ending of the series in a way that ensured they wouldn't try to make him write more. If that ending is him running the ship aground this volume is him sighing and turning the ship towards shore.

This is probably my least favorite arc of the series because we start to see our heroes go their separate ways. It's not badly written, and I think showing how bonds and relationships change over time is ultimately good for a story like this. I just personally like it better when we get to see our characters growing together as a team. There is a lot of individual character development in this volume which makes for an interesting read though, so I'm sure you'll be entertained.

Now this idea is pretty interesting.

We have three demon kings constantly fighting to be the rulers of the demon realm. And thanks to Yusuke and company it will all change, making all of them agree on creating a tournament to decide who will be the true demon king. Really looking forward to this ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Togashi sensei mecoba memilah masing2 kubu utk setiap MC. Cukup menarik.
Namun ide pengadaan turnamen terkesan dangkal dan ebrulang. Meskipun begitu utk dunia shounen manga barangkali ini tetap bisa dinikmati

This was okay. As I feared, it's getting very rushed. Despite that, I feel like we're getting a pretty good sense for the major players.

The art is getting quite poor though.
