Other genres Russ Heath drew were love stories, science-fiction and adventure, such as MAD and Frontline Combat for EC Comics. In 1950, he joined National, where he worked on the full range of comic book features, among which were Silent Knight, Sgt. Rock, Sea Devils and Golden Gladiator.Russ Manning, meanwhile, created the fondly-remembered science fiction comic series Magnus, Robot Fighter, a superhero series that stood out because of Manning's excellent artwork. It was published by Gold Key Comics and started in 1963, and Manning drew it until 1968; Dark Horse Comics is currently reprinting the series.Last but not least, Mark Schultz (Cadillacs and Dinosaurs) is a man caught at the apex of his work's influence within the field and provides an altogether different perspective on great art's role in great comics, discussing his forays into Hollywood and more.

Beautiful reproductions of these artists ("in full color for only 10 cents!"), but the chapters on Burne Hogarth and Frank Frazetta were the best. These guys were brawny away from and at the pencil, it's like fondness for gramps who lifts 80 lb weights and still reels his 15 mm porn by projection while dipping his inking pen in beer.

Five long interviews with Burne Hogarth, Russ Heath, Russ Manning, Mark Schultz and Frank Frazetta. Each interview is full of fascinating information, and it's amazing to me how similar that answers - the pacing, the verbosity, the language - match their artistic styles. For example, Frazetta's language is full and physical; Heath's economical and to the point.

The interviews are all recommended. I'd skip the final essay however. Obviously, anything related to the Comics Journal couldn't settle for simply offering insightful interviews. No, they had to close it with an essay about Frazetta, only the essay deals less with Frank's superlative talent and more with how shallow, derivative and pathetically lifeless any and all other popular artists are. Sigh.
