Increase student learning in the inquiry-based science classroom! Interactive notebooks allow students to record observations, reflect on learning, and self-assess their work. Packed with student examples, this detailed guide explains the unique features that make interactive notebooks more effective tools than conventional notebooks for science classrooms. This
I like the main ideas of the book and got some direction on how to make better use of our science notebooks. A few issues for my setting: Many of my students do not have basic needs met at home and are latch key kids in a blue collar community. My students can't be expected to complete homework everynight or rely on parent support. Everything really does need to be completed at school and even if homework was effective here, I still think the amount of work completed in her day is unrealistic. What was listed for each day in her science class would take about 2.5 days in my middle school class. Overall though I liked it and am looking forward to implementing more interactive notebooks.
While "Teaching Science with Interactive Notebooks" is a useful books, I found very few suggestions were something I could directly implement without major tweaking. The author seemed to have an abundance of time to use the notebooks, and the luxury of allowing notebooks out of her class for independent homework time. I don't seem to have enough time or the ability to let the notebooks out of class. This book is directed most likely to the 6th-10th-ish grades. I love the differentiation that notebooks offer, but setting up expectations has been a struggle for me.
I've been using a version of interactive notebooks for two years. This book is packed with some great ideas to promote students making connections amongst the myriad things we throw at them. There are some definite strategies I will take and use this upcoming school year.
I really appreciated the photos of actual notebooks and the author's classroom to show the actual implementation of these strategies. Very helpful for wrapping your head around the big picture.
I didn't like the idea of making the students color the entire page. I don't think students should have to spend time coloring in school, just to make something look nice - accent pieces, yes, fill up an entire page with color, eh, not necessary.
But the ideas, photographs, lists to use, reproducibles are great!
Really good ideas of moving to interactive notebooking in upper elementary and middle school. Assumes teachers have little or no background knowledge with interactive notebooks.
Love the rigor and the fun in these notebooks! I hope to tweak it a little for my fourth graders next year! Bring on another summer school project! Woo!
great ideas, I will definitely use some of them in my classroom. I think she must have some pretty high level students though. I cant imagine trying to get my kids to write a 5 paragraph essay every unit.
